I don't know why there was such a fervor either. I mean, if Joan and Sherlock slept together I would understand it--we were promised they'd remain platonic, so I'd get pissed if they got together even though I ship it in fandom--but do people want her to be a monk or something? They got along, they found each other attractive and intelligent, and I bet they had a lovely time.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe they're canon fans (like me) who got (understandably) weirded the fuck out and (not so understandably) refuse to have a sense of humor about their weirded-out-ness?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to wail about it certainly, but I think he's dull as dishwater and she can do a hell of a lot better.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
You think a world-class restauranteur who blew up his brother's stuff and is obviously involved in a mysterious plot to get Sherlock back to London for an as-yet-unknown reason is dull?

I'm not sure I can handle your idea of an exciting boyfriend, anon.

I don't have a lot of feelings about Joan/Mycroft, but as long as Joan had a good time then I say good for her.

My issues are two-fold:

They spent the first episode of the season making it a big deal over whether she did or not (and making it all about Sherlock--which is kind of theme for this season... ~_~ ), and seemed to have pretty clearly said no, it didn't happen Then in "The Marchioness", we find out she had. And it was so... out of nowhere (esp after ep 1) that I honestly feel like they changed their minds about it between episodes.

At the end of... that one episode, I don't recall the name... we see that Mycroft has some plan. If we find out that Mycroft slept with Joan for that reason, I'm gonna be pissed.

If they'd at least acted really attracted to each other in the season premire, I could have let these slide, but as it is, it's just kind of irritating and sloppy-looking.

I think it icked people out because Sherlock said in Episode 1 that if she'd done that, it was as a substitute for *him*. Which was totally OOC for him and exemplifies the 180 to shitty writing that the show has taken in S2.

Secret 5 - Elementary (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-12-20 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Joan Watson, as portrayed by Lucy Liu, and Mycroft Holmes, as portrayed by Rhys Ifans, from the TV series "Elementary", sitting together at a dinner table.]

I don't ship them but see no reason why fandom has to wail over the fact that they slept together. What has it "ruined", really? I trust that the writers wouldn't include this unless it was a key plot point later on, and I trust them to do a decent job because that's what they've done so far. Why can't people just calm the fuck down and wait and see before they proclaim that their beloved series is doomed?

Secret because: Fandom seems to either ship it or hate it.

Okay, this is going to be an angry rant, basically.

First of all, Mycroft as a character makes no sense and is there for no reason. He is wasted potential. He's supposed to be smarter than Sherlock, but nowhere is he shown this way; instead, he is just your average guy next door, albeit with a strange passion for gastronomy and weirdly well-connected (otherwise he would have never got away with the explosion thing).

Second, I'm immensely irritated that all TV shows ever seem to introduce random romantic storylines that come out of nowhere, develop in the stupidest manner possible and, to top it all, are quite often OOC. I cannot imagine a reason why Joan would sleep with Mycroft other than "theeR MSUT BE RMOANEC and SEXE". Just, oh my god. To forgive this show for yet another random love story is so hard, especially after Irene (Moriarty)/Sherlock. This was some seriously awful writing - it could never be good, not when they settled for following the cliche Irene-the-love-interest trope with the additional bonus of all the canon!cheesiness multiplied by the factor of 100. The only reason I let it slide then was because the ending was so perfect.

And of course there is the third argument against their being paired (in-universe, that is) - the relationship dynamics in Step Nine. The episode worked perfectly well with Joan and Mycroft feeling some mutual sympathy of platonic kind but mostly trying to go about bringing some closure to Mycroft's conflict with Sherlock. Then it was suddenly revealed that LOL THEY BANGED, and it is no longer clear if Joan was even interested in what was going on between the Holmes brothers.

Plus, Sherlock's reaction. What is he, five years old? Three? The fuck was that speech about Joan projecting her repressed sexual desire for him onto Mycroft?

/I'm so, so bitter.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
See, I'm not bothered by the wasted potential because I'm inclined to give the show a chance to prove that it's not wasted potential. I'm also inclined to give them benefit of the doubt that it won't be another random love story.

As for being smarter than Holmes... Mycroft is a successful businessman and owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant and there have been fairly strong hints that there's more under the surface we're not being shown yet. Holmes is newly out of rehab and crashing at a building owned by his father. Mycroft may not have Holmes' talent for crimesolving, but "average guy next door" doesn't really describe him too well.

Like the OP, I'm cool with waiting to see what will happen before I gnash my teeth and wail about wasted potential and everything being ruined.

The writing on this show isn't bad, but it's not good enough to have faith that they wouldn't just have them sleep together to extend the Mycroft drama, or that every plot or character inconsistency will be eventually resolved.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is just that he is so SO fucking ugly.
She can do way better than that hobo looking monster.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
As it is right now, I don't mind it. I wouldn't be particularly enthused to see a relationship between the two, because Elementary's Mycroft is pretty boring BUT as two people who were attracted to one another and boned? Sure, why not?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I had no idea people were even pissed about this until I was looking up something else on tumblr and ran into some rants about it. But like, I really don't care. I don't even see it as romantic, as this point, much less a romantic subplot: they seem to have no connection or interest otherwise. Whatever, they had a moment, they had sex, neither seems to be pining for the other, so...

It's not like we haven't seen plenty of Sherlock hooking up with randos. Give Joan a shot: we see her go on dates sometimes but it never seems to go anywhere, if she wants to get laid let her.

I didn't care one way or another, I was a bit surprised because it didn't seem like they were all that into each other when they first met, but then I wasn't looking that hard at their interactions.

I didn't realise people were freaking out about it. Personally I'm not a fan of them together (a combination of me being a diehard Joan/Marcus shipper and Mycroft having made absolutely no impression on me as a character), but if people are freaking out, that seems a little...excessive. If it was being shoved down our throats, I could understand it but basically everything has been left to the imagination, so I don't really see what there is to rant about.

Because fandom has its heart set on Joan being a lesbian. Or at the very least, with Sherlock.

Well, I personally don't like it, but this is my first time saying it on the internet. I'm a Watson/Gregson shipper (wife, what wife?) so I'm probably biased, though.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Are people slut shaming her or something?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-20 08:53 am (UTC)(link)
When people say they want a female character to be in charge of her own sexuality, they don't mean *actually* in charge. They just mean that instead of playing by society's rules, she plays by theirs.

What really bothers me about the fandom reaction to Joan and Mycroft is the insistence that "she can do better". Setting aside for the moment how awesome Mycroft is (he's rich and he cooks! what more do you want?)... sure, she can do better. She may, in fact, be doing better right now, because sleeping with Mycroft doesn't preclude her from dating or sleeping with anyone else. One night with Mycroft doesn't make her his property, or him hers. It's the obsession with shipping that turns this into something it's not.

Personally, I like that this happened, purely because of watching Sherlock fail at dealing with it like a mature adult. He needs to learn a lesson about boundaries and the fact that Watson's sex life is none of his business. I ship Watson with Bell overall, though.

I think fandom likes UST and chemistry and pining and a slow burn, all leading to "happily ever after." So, if two people make a fairly pragmatic decision to sleep together because they both feel in the mood, but they didn't have much build-up before hand and have no interest in carrying on a relationship afterward, fandom doesn't really have anywhere to go with that. Rather than just dismiss the incident as boring and irrelevant and move on, some people are going to feel offended and make a bigger deal out of whatever reasons there are to dislike it.
