The murdering, kidnapping rapist who fucked over an entire population of people because of one person (who trusted the wrong person as a child) and doesn't regret it is more sympathetic? I don't know how to respond to that.

Except, clearly you did respond -- with the same tired "But Regina's an evil rapist!! How could anyone see anything good or sympathetic or worthwhile in her, because RAPIST!!!!" tale that's all the rage, I might add.

If she didn't feel remorse, why was she crying in the "Evil Queen" ep?

She's just saying she wouldn't change anything because it meant having Henry, who she loves.

She also had an abusive mother and was corrupted by magic.

And now she's trying to be a better person for her son.

It's really gross that all these rape apologists are coming at you for stating the truth.

Basically this.

I mean, I like Rumple and Regina just fine, but more sympathetic than Snow and Charming? Not quite.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm going to disagree. I do think they're much more interesting/fun to watch than the Charmings though.

Secret 6 - Once Upon a Time (TV series)

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-01 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Queen Regina and Rumpelstiltskin above, and Prince Charming and Snow White below, all characters from the TV series "Once Upon a Time".]

I think they [Regina, Rumpelstiltskin] are more sympathetic than they [Charming, Snow White] are.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
... Okay. Rumple's far and away my favourite character, and Regina is fantastic to watch, especially when she's fed up and snarky. But, ah. 'Sympathetic' is not the word I'd go for? I mean, I'd argue they're more charismatic, maybe, or more engaging, though both of those are subjective, but sympathetic ...

Rumple's my favourite, but many of the major traumas he goes through, Snow and Charming also go through (loss of a child to another world, child growing up without them, a true love that they can't bloody keep hold of for more than five minutes at a time without the universe fucking with them), and being completely fair, Snow and Charming didn't semi-destroy an entire world and curse its inhabitants because of it. They do both have their moments (Snow's arc in S2), but ... not really in the same league as the other two, no.

I love and adore Rumple and firmly wish for him to have a happy ending, but 300 years of screwing with people in an effort to destroy one world to reach other does put some dents in his sympathy quotient, you know?

What is it with especially women thinking that if you can ~understand someone's pain who did something horrible, that means they're really alright?

No wait, this is what we're socialised to do.

Contrary to popular opinion, there are very few 100% coldly evil people IRL, most people who do monstrous things or are grossly prejudiced, feel pain and vulnerability and can be perfectly nice and ~charismatic when they want to be. So when this is shown in fictional characters, suddenly heaps of people are like "but they're not really evil if they suffer!"

No, duh, they can be both. And it's okay to like them as evil characters, even ones on the path to redemption.

I agree. Which is one of the reasons I stopped watching. They were spending way more time on making "villains" sympathetic and not really doing anything with the "heroes". I like my villains to be straight up evil, I don't want to feel bad for them or see about their messed up path or them crying about their life choices or whatever.

I don't, likely never will, and realize this probably makes me boring.

(And yes, I also realize you can like characters who have done awful things without excusing their behavior, I just don't in this particular case.)

I think you might be mistaking "interesting" for "sympathetic".

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Sympathetic." You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

I've just barely started watching this show and though I find Snow and her prince to be really bland and uninteresting...I'm sorry, the queen is not more sympathetic. Like, at all.

Rumple I can maybe see due to his past thing with the magic and how it's corrupted him, but it's a stretch.

But the Queen/Regina? Hell no.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
It sucks for them that their parents were wack. But they created most of their own problems. Responding to it by murdering innocent people left and right kind of takes away any sympathy I could have for them. Regina channeled her anger on the wrong person. Hell she was so petty about it she killed her father, the one person she loved and loved her.

Snow had both of her parents murdered. Her father by her Step-mother that she had looked up too at the time. Then the Charmings had their child ripped away from them.

They're also the only 2 reasons I watch. I started watching for Rumple and have continued for both of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-01 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Regina's a heroine-type who turns evil from bad shit happening to her, so of course she gets a lot of sympathy from fans. It's hard not to feel anything watching younger!Regina never get liked for herself and never really allowed choices about her life, just herded into roles she never wanted to play (Cora's idea of a perfect daughter, Snow's replacement mother, Leopold's pretty ornament, Rumpelstiltskin's curse vessel.)

I wouldn't say that Snow and Charming are unsympathetic, but they're so boring that I just don't care.

I agree I find Regina and Mister Golds'a plight more sympathetic they haven't had their happy ending unlike Charming/Snow have. I'm sure it's to bring a more human aspect to them..what motivates them and how the hero can use this to deal with them-- you see this first With Charming and he uses it to deal Gold/Rumpelstiltskin then Regina.
