loling forever at that fanart XD

Where did the phrase "what are your thoughts on yaoi?" come from, anyway?

It came from fandom wank. Someone posted a really long and missing the point essay titled "my thoughts on yaoi". As far as I now, it has been deleted.

IDK, I'd take awful slash clichés over awful het clichés any day. At least awful slash clichés are a little less likely to reek of internalised misogyny.

Well, some of those tropes are relationship tropes, so they wouldn't be present in gen. And, what? Het fic has it's own ridiculous tropes too. A lot of the tropes in het fic are used in slash fic. You want size difference kink? Read Stephenie Meyers. Infidelity? See... well, a lot of stuff.

Sometimes people don't want realism, they want tropey fics that have nothing to do with reality.

Wow, and here I find bad writers everywhere. Damn it.

But then, some of what you say doesn't exactly sound bad in all contexts? More like certain kinks... which are avoidable for the most part if you're not into them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-04 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
>infidelity-conditioning

Because het romance in media is so free of that

IDK, I see some pretty horrible tropes in het fic, too.

Secret 8 - Slash fanfiction

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2014-01-04 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is two Care Bears? from the cartoon and toys. One of them is pink and has a drawing of two flowers on its chest, and the other is white with a blue and red cape and a drawing of a shield on its chest. The pink one appears to be hitting on the white one, who is horrified. The picture has the credit? "ThisCrispyKat" and the words "And what are your thoughts on yaoi?"]

I don't have a problem with slash at all in principle. In fact, I ship a whole lot of slash ships myself. But when I look for fic, I find that slash, far more than gen or even het, tends to come packaged with a whole load of really annoying and unsavory tropes, from childish, whiny Nice Guy approval to infidelity-condoning, that are absolutely part of the slash, not just due to writers being gross people in general -- I've seen writers whose gen I loved write the nastiest things in their slashfic.

It makes me wonder if maybe, these writers don't know any gay people and don't understand that gay relationships are bound by the same rules as straight ones, and are not magical transcendent life bonds that are above the petty morality that constrains het love?

I think the 'infidelity-condoning' part is more a function of having a non-canon ship than specifically a slash ship? Most of the places I see it is when there are canon relationships that run in opposition to the ship of the fic, and I've seen it happen with both slash and het ships (and some femslash ships). You do tend to see a lot of it with slash ships, since very, very few of those are ever canon, but you also see a lot of it with canon love triangles, usually het, where fandom or just the author considers canon to have made the wrong choice, or where canon has awesome female teammate vs often-absent female love interest, etc.

I also tend to see it where a fic is rebelling against a popular fandom ship by getting them together, then bringing in a second character to show how obviously better for the person they are. Again, gender of the participants depends entirely on the ships and canons in question.

So ... for that trope at least, I think it's based more on whether or not there's a canon and/or popular fanon ship for the ship-of-the-fic to deal with, rather than any gender-specific reasons?

I think it's less about being realistic and more writing about fantasy fulfilment.

At least, I'd really really hope that no-one thinks what I write in my fics is how I think RL relationships (gay or not) work.

I'm wondering how self aware this "my thoughts on yaoi" reference was...

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-01-04 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
7/10, OP. A lot of people are probably going to think you're serious with this one. And it's a fresh twist on the old yaoi troll/No True Gayman classic.

I'm going say I almost couldn't have done better myself.

Tbh I find that slash and het are pretty equal in regards to tropes, but I can understand finding one more annoying. I find het tropes 1000x more irritating than slash tropes for the most part and as such I usually have a harder time finding het fic that I like, which is annoying as hell when I'm all about a m/f pairing.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
At this point, I mostly read lesbian fic. Writers have the fewest preconceptions about what they're supposed to put in a lesbian romance, so if they make it a romance and not just a fuckfest, it tends to be decent.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It makes me wonder what fandoms and pairings you've been in to. While yeah there is some of that in every fandom, the ones I've been in it's always been the minority and considered 'bad-fic'.

Oh I have read some horrifying and cringe worthy slash but the other day I read a het fic where the guy was getting all creepy on a sleeping girl so....

sometimes you just have to make good use of the back button.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
I've definitely noticed some creepy/disturbing tropes in slash fic, but not any of the ones OP mentioned, maybe it depends on the fandom. The nice thing is that they're usually pretty easy to spot early on.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-05 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on your fandom, OP.

Also... there's a lot of infidelity in the queer club scene. :/

Nah, I've gotta agree with you OP. I've just gotten attached to a very popular slash pairing and GOOD LORD the sheer amount of gross and squicky shit that people are willing to justify. Sure, people do that in het fic, but slash fans romanticise and justify it to all new levels. All must bow down to the pretty boys, apparently.

Not to mention how many people just do not recognise skeeviness because of the power-dynamics between two men. Apparently things that are obviously sketchy between a man and woman suddenly become invisible or okay if both have dicks.
