How is the cold treating you?

[personal profile] spacebabie 2014-01-08 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
I had to scrape off frost off my windshield with an old card in 25 degrees and with no gloves because I lost mine. I also had to apply more lotion on my legs and hands. I hate how the cold dries my skin out.

It was -11 here and my car was completely covered in snow and underneath that was a surprise layer of extremely resilient ice, of the crunchy kind that WILL NOT COME OFF THE WINDOWS EVER. So yah this morning was un-fun, especially since I had to move my car at 6 am so my roommate could get to work and I had to unbury it in all that misery and then it got stuck in a drift in the street because I couldn't see out of the windows on account of the ice T.T

Extended whining session is over now, gonna go cuddle bf and pretend all of that didn't happen lol

I'm not really feeling it as much as was at the beginning if the season. It was 30F on Sunday and I had the windows and door open.

I'm in Southern California. It's too hot for January.

It's been Booger-Freezingly Cold, here. Surprisingly, I have had few problems. I did have to hang a blanket over my front door, because it's window is not insulated like the others in the apartment and the whole thing is in need of weather stripping. Could be worse. I haven't had to go out much and my car has started fine.

I get better run times in the cold because it's -7 degrees and I want to get home as soon as possible. Same on the dry skin; my feet are starting to crack.

I put almond oil on my skin to keep from drying out. When it gets really dry, I have to use a little lotion afterwards but that hasn't happened to me yet this winter.

Minnesotan here. Yesterday, for science, I threw a mug of boiling water outside and it evaporated before hitting the ground. Yay cold!

It isn't -30 degrees celsius so I shall not complain! Because that is how cold it was most of last winter, and that just about bankrupted me.

Only thing that is annoying is that I have to remember to put my spikes on before going outside if I want to survive the trip to the bus.

Had the worst dry skin on my forehead for a while, but then it warmed up here so that's pretty much gone.

Seeing as there is pretty much no cold, I'm good! I don't want be that "neener neener I'm in SoCal and you're not" person, but it seems everyone on the internet wants to talk about the freezing horribleness this week. It's like 66F now.

But it is super super dry! So dry, such static. I have been zapping every single damn thing I touch- the poor fluffy cat, my keyboard, light switches, and WATER STRAIGHT OUTTA THE FAUCET.

I had to drive my mother in to work this morning at 5am. All of the car doors except the rear passenger-side door had frozen shut. After I drove her to work and she got out of the car, the front passenger door was opened, and then it froze open. Eventually I ended up waking mechanosapience up and trading off car-thawing duties, the door finally agreed to close at around 7am.

It took me ten minutes to get out of my driveway. My coat wasn't doing it, so I stole my sister's.

Ahahahahahahahaha. We've been having a lovely winter here. I love temperatures that run up to minus 40. They're my favourite. I am not looking forward to summer at all.

Someone in my area spray painted a mound of snow with "can winter be over yet?"

Also, my mother is stuck in Chicago. She took a train down there and the scheduled train right after hers got stuck on the tracks for over nine hours. So she just made it but can't leave because no trains or flights are going yet and it's a hell of a drive to Illinois in this weather. And what's really funny is that before she left, I jokingly warned her this could happen. A train a year ago or so got stuck for twelve hours. I told her to make more sandwiches just in case.

We're fine, but the dog is having a pretty miserable time of it when she needs to go out to do her business. The extreme chill is making walking outside hurt her paws, and at one point she wouldn't/couldn't move until someone tried to carry her. (Keyword being 'tried'- this is a fairly large dog we're talking about here and neither of us have that kind of upper body strength. It ultimately ended up as a sort of awkward hug/carry/drag.)

We tried improvising some dog booties, but they didn't really work so all we can do until the pet stores reopen is to treat her paws with balm before and after.

Been fairly lucky so far, I've been in Dallas/Forth Worth, eastern Oklahoma, and central Arkansas the last few days, and it's been ass-cold and windy as fuck, but no precipitation. I really hate the wind, but I am soooo happy no ice or snow came with it. Now in Amarillo, and there are patches of snow on the ground and it is yet again windy out (boooo!) but it will be above freezing tomorrow. So I'm pretty pleased.

Hope you get some nice warm new gloves soon! Not having gloves sucks, they're very important.

I've been visiting my folks in Philly, where everyone is complaining bitterly about the terrible cold--it's 12F here. Still cold enough to freeze the snot in your nose, but I'm kind of disappointed that I missed the real cold back home in Iowa, where yesterday's daytime high was -5F.

Been bundling up like crazy and trying to go out only to get to work and go home. I have a cold allergy so I have to be really careful in this weather. Yesterday I went out at work for not even five minutes to check something on the side of the building and when I came back in I had a terrible headache that didn't go away for a few hours. Been having the dry skin troubles with my hands but luckily I finally remembered to bring some hand lotion to work so I at least stopped having that pesky 'look down and see your hands are bleeding again' issue.

Maybe it's because I'm always cold, but yesterday I decided to do the grocery run AFTER everyone who was trying to beat the wind chill did theirs, and it was -9 with a wind chill of like -35... and it did not feel appreciably different than 20 with a wind chill of 10. However, when I got into my car and adjusted the rearview mirror, I did see visible icicles inside my nose.

So the cold wasn't a problem. Getting off my street was. I got stuck once trying to get out of my driveway onto the street, got stuck again trying to turn off my street onto the cross street, and then got stuck again trying to get back into my driveway after getting the groceries. Fortunately I have cool neighbors, one of which has a truck with a tow rope, so they pulled me out the first two times, and the third time grabbed a shovel and helped me dig around my tires, then gave me a push as I gunned it and at least made it off the street and a LITTLE ways into my driveway.

After that, have stayed inside in fleece pajamas and mostly snuggling in a heated waterbed. Unfortunately the guy who was supposed to activate my cable TV service also saw my driveway for the trap it was, so we wound up rescheduling that for tomorrow morning... I was hoping I'd have cable while hiding away. ;) Oh well.

6 degrees F with -15 degree windchill. And because yesterday was sort of warm and sunny, the massive amount of snow from three days ago melted and refroze into an endless lumpy skating rink of ice stretching in all directions. eeerrrggghhh.

It was -24C this morning without the wind chill. :< I had to close my apartment window because it was a bit cold. This makes me sad, I like the fresh air.

I am sick of trying to de-ice my car though, it's a pain in the butt.

Last night it was 7F, which is unusual for this part of the country. The heating unit for downstairs basically gave up and said "NOPE, I'M NOT WORKING THIS HARD," so the downstairs of my house is fairly chilly. So I've been holed up upstairs since that unit is working fine and heating pretty well. But then this weekend it's supposed to be in the 60's for temperatures. Crazy weather.
