Male-female friendships

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I hear a lot of complaining about how in media men and women are never allowed to be 'just' friends, which is not an unreasonable complaint; what I wanna know is, what are your favourite M/F platonic friendships? Like for me:

-Lee/Francine in 'Scarecrow and Mrs. King'. They have an extremely contentious relationship where they pick at each other all the time, but mostly I think they butt heads because they're so very similar. I like that they can switch from that needling to professionalism on the job, too.

-Joan/Sherlock in 'Elementary'. They endlessly challenge each other and support each other.

-Ichabod/Abbie in 'Sleepy Hollow'. Actually I support them as a couple, but not at this point in the story. I'm really enjoying them as friends.

-kind of an obscure one, but in the 'Lower Decks' episode of TNG, the relationship between Worf and the young Bajoran ensign was wonderful. They were friends within the bounds of a professional superior/subordinate relationship.

-Janeway/Paris in 'Star Trek: Voyager'. They are professional on-duty and friends off...they did make babies one time but that episode was horrible and most fans have collectively decided we hallucinated it.

Josh, Sally and Aidan from Syfy's version of Being Human. I could watch a whole episode of them sitting in the kitchen and shooting the breeze. They have a great family chemistry.

I keep coming up with favorites only to remember there was eventual romance in them. Seven/Doctor for Voyager and Mulder/Scully are two off the top of my head that I loved, but alas.

(Now I'm wondering if I'm mis-remembering the Seven/Doctor thing...that had awkward romance at some point, didn't it?)

I love, love, LOVE Donna's relationship with The Doctor. I love their banter and bickering. I love how quickly the Doctor called her his "best friend." Donna is my favorite companion because their relationship.

I keep coming up with perfect friendships that ultimately ended in love... Mulder/Scully (but since I reject the second half of the show, I might as well believe it didn't end the way it did, so there), and my personal favorite: Lenny and, um, Angela Bassett's amazing character in Strange Days.

I'd say Ellen Ripley/Dwayne Hicks, but there was UST...

Ok, maybe I'll mention Black Books then, I adored the little strained friendship those 3 build up in there.

ginainthekingsroad: Walter's flights of fancy; Astrid eyeroll (Fringe- Walter & Astrid (Story Time))

Re: Male-female friendships

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2014-01-30 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Astrid/Walter is the bestest. I think Astrid "gets" Walter on an emotional level that even Peter and Olivia can't. I always wanted to see a bit more interaction between Altsrid and Walternate, but I get that Walternate's position was a bit more removed from Fringe Division.

Jadzia (and Ezri)/Sisko. I love it when Sisko calls Dax "old man". :3

Benson/Stabler are friends and I will fight shippers.

And here's an odd one- Miles Vorkosigan and Alys Vorpatril. They don't have a ton of scenes together, but Aunt Alys is the HBIC and I always relish it when she turns up.

Seconding Joan/Sherlock.

I also really liked how Katara and Zuko's friendship developed, though I can't imagine them functioning as a couple at all.

My favorite male/female platonic relationship is between me and my best friend.

I honestly can't think of anything in literature though, however, for videogames it would probably have to be Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine simply due to the fact that they absolutely never have any UST or even any hint of it. They are professional ass-kicking partners and that's about it.

Willow and Xander, if you ignore the awkward high school crush phase.

I like the Firefly family/friendship relationship between all of the crew. Obviously there are some romances in there but there's a lot of great friendships too.

-Jack and Liz from 30 Rock, because they're awesome.

-Tom and Seven from Voyager (though he's pretty much the only male character with whom I could almost ship her).

-Phoenix Wright with Mia and Maya Fey. He's like a put-upon-but-devoted older brother to Maya and a mildly-awestruck younger brother to Mia.

-Harry Potter and Hermione Granger, because they get each other so well.

-Bentley and Carmelita from Sly Cooper. They really seemed to get along well and respect each other in the fourth game.

-Eliot and Parker from Leverage. Though he's often annoyed by Parker's antics, he still cares about her a lot and is a great big-brother figure to her.

Awww, Scarecrow and Mrs. King. I loved that series.

Penny and Sheldon, in TBBT

Mai Taniyama and Hosho Takigawa in Ghost Hunt

...that's all I can think of at the moment.

Zoe and Koji, Tommy, and Koichi from Digimon Frontier. Really her and Takyua and JP as well but she has a thing for Takuya (which she's dropped by the end of the show) and JP has a thing for her (which I ship ferociously).

I really like the friendship between Avan and his comrades in Valkyria Chronicles 2. About half his classmates are girls, and romance never develops with him. The relationships he has with Cosette, Rene, and Alexis are especially cute.

Oh! And Frasier and Roz. Yeah they hooked up that one time but both agreed it was a mistake and went back to being platonic.

Mine tend to cross over to almost familial, but...

Link and Navi in Ocarina of Time - probably my favourite example (and I am choosing to ignore Miyamoto saying Navi had feelings for him because dammit it wasn't in the game).

Link and Zelda in Ocarina of Time, Spirit Tracks, and Skyward Sword - I can read those as romantic, but I also love reading them as best friends (and for SS Link and Zelda, basically platonic soul mates).

Harry and Hermione in... Harry Potter - I actually really liked the dance in DH1 because it did come across as someone trying to cheer up their best friend.

The Doctor and various companions in... Doctor Who - coming to mind are Jo, Sarah Jane, Ace, and definitely Donna.

Eowyn and Merry in Lord of the Rings - just... supporting each other through the ride to battle and, "Courage, Merry. Courage for our friends" and sob.

Raleigh and Mako in Pacific Rim - another fantastic example for platonic soul mates.

Mako and Stacker, as above - familial, this time.

Korra and Bolin, and Asami and Bolin in Legend of Korra (before their relationships were totally ignored and their characterisation RUINED).

Aang and Toph in Avatar - they countered each other fantastically.
