I believe some people use them for reference when drawing, the more realistic they are the more handy in that respect, I suppose. The Loki one is terribly uncanny valley, I agree... but I hate action figures, I don't count.

That's an action figure? I thought it was a scene from a video game. I prefer my uncanny valley in video games and not figures.

I've never understood the appeal of action figures full stop. Though that could be because I've a weird block about humanoid figures. I had one doll as a kid, the rest of my toys were all animals/dinosaurs/robots/etc.

Although, oddly, I don't mind human-shaped sculptures. I've never quite figured this out.

The ultra realistic ones DEFINITELY look better for cartoon and video game characters. Real people not so much...

I think it may have something to do with the extent to which a person is able to really associate the figure with the character/the actor. Those who do create strong mental connections between the outward features of a character and their, hm, "essence", will probably have a hard time not being creeped out by realistic action figures. For those who do not, it is less of a problem.

E.g. I wouldn't be creeped out not because I do not find the idea of a pocket human creepy, but because I could never think of an action figure as something that has much in common with the original character. Like, the appearance, sure, but it doesn't even have the body language and the facial expressions of the original, let alone voice, or vocabulary, or any of the kajillion things that define a character. It's like an empty hulk.

Ultra-realistic action figures are very cute. I'd love to have them if I found any for my main fandoms.

I'm impressed by the standard of workmanship, but I'd never want to have one of these realistic figures either.

A series of 'action figures' I do like is Monsterism.

If I had the cash I would own ALL the action figures. Even the realistic ones.

I don't know, I just think they look so cool. They aren't exact (which might be a good thing), but most the Hot Toys figures and statues are quite accurate and expertly made. I can see why people like them; they're very shiny.

(However, if I owned this thing I would probably wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and steal a glance at it to make sure it hadn't moved in my sleep. Because seriously, that little shit looks evil.)

lol at the uncanny valley. it's so true. but on the other hand it's really cool. it's better than having 30-50 cm ball-joint dolls around your house sitting and staring directly at you.

I have the first version of Hot Toys Loki and all I'll say is as much as he's pretty cool I'm just glad he's not one of the ones with the weighted/moving eyes. Also Facebook wanted me to tag it when I uploaded a photo, which was sort of unsettling.

Sort of do want to collect more HTs but they're so expensive and I'm not sure if I want a room full of scary figurines looking at me...

Basically I understand why they're not for everyone!

This action figure does look off. Not quite Tom Hiddleston, yet there is a great resemblance.

The more I look, the more bothered I get.

I kinda understand. I prefer more stylized than hyperealistic - especially in the case of this one where it's so close but just missed the mark.

I also don't like when artist of a comic based on a live action property (like the Buffy comics) tries to make their drawings match the actor*. I would prefer they just draw the characters in their own style since more often then not, they don't quite get them right (in my opinion, at least).

*Except for Jo Chen because she'a amazing!

Owners probably do their best not to look at them too closely.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm not into merch in general...but I'm pretty sure it's the owning (and sometimes even the using) of merchandise that's appealing, not looking at them.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo. I might have to buy one for my bathroom.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I like the figures to look like the actor. In the sense that they're not ugly. Like the Lana Lang from smallville action figure my mum thought looked like a beast...

I don't get this whole "uncanny valley" thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-03 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, I don't. I've never looked at hyper-realistic anything (art, figures, whatever) and thought it was creepy. It just looks like realistic art to me. Why should I find realism creepy?!

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-02-03 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
No, no, no OP. You have it all wrong. Those aren't creepy... dollfies are creepy.
