Blah blah *~historical treatment in fiction*~ blah blah. Sexualizing guys OK because it's "making up" for the past. Sexualizing women adds to the bad past and we can't have that until parity has been attained.

Which is all bullshit, if you ask me. You can't make up for the past, you can only work toward a more equal present and future. Which means sexing up everyone, if that's your bag.

Parity will never be obtained

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-02-12 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
That requires people that want to be angry about this somehow being appeased at last.

I figure the best we can hope for is rule of funny/rule of hot forgiving anything in modern day as long as everybody is a valid target.

It depends on how it's done, duh. So often the male gaze is belittling, whereas the reverse ain't true. Look at porn, ffs.

There's an argument about how the women being sexualized are a male fantasy and the men being sexualized are more of a male power fantasy than an analogous female fantasy.

Personally I'd like to move away from objectification of anyone but it can be hard to define where that ends and appreciating someone as a sexual being begins.

I'm not too concerned about treating animated people as objects though.

It's a pretty unconvincing argument.

Especially in regards to anime.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
That argument is so wrong it hurts.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like that argument basically erases an aspect of female sexuality.

There's a pretty big difference between the Kratos kind of sexy (which is all about how strong and powerful he is) and the kind of sexy that's about how they'll do anything for you (which some anime guys fall into, especially in shows for girls.)

Incidentally, there's a lot of debate over how you might do Kratos sexy with a female character. I've heard it argued that Aeon Flux pulled it off, but I haven't watched it.

long thing is long....

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I feel that this is a fair argument which is ignored too often.

(First of all, I think it's obvious it shouldn't be a contest and sexualizing people in belittling ways isn't healthy for anyone.)

BUT...having said that...

When men sexualize women it's usually (from what I've seen) about the tits and ass, the nudity, sexy poses, costumes that show more than they hide, etc. etc.

So it seems like men (in general) ASSUME the same thing (showing off male body parts), is what women want. Because genders = polar opposite but exactly the same.

But when women (not all but some) read romance novels or write fanfic where men are shown in emotional and tender ways, rather than stuff-strutting ways, men seem to find it gross and emasculating and react in disgust. Because it's "unmanly" and "how dare they treat the male characters with such little respect."

Again, not every person thinks that way or says that, but come on, there IS a general pervading attitude that showing sensitive guys is emasculating, whereas if there is male bod yparts it should be enough for those whiny bitches because what, "men are being sexualized too!!!!1"

To put my cards on the table I don't think any sexualizing where people are treated as SEX OBJECTS is good. I don't agree with it and I feel it causes a lot of harm in the world. Not everyone is going to agree with me, but that's still what I think.

And FWIW I think enjoying the sexuality of another person or gender doesn't have to be degrading and shouldn't be.

When I showed the (as it turned out sadly lacking) trailer in stream, I called it "Fanservicing the anime."

I wasn't wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
And that's one of the reasons why I love KLK so much. I was so happy when I saw that the only Deva with a sexualized outfit was a man.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:16 am (UTC)(link)

I'm not necessarily against fanservice but the fact that Ryuko was forced to wear Senketsu against her own will at first bothered me.
There's a difference in tone when some of the female characters exhibit their nudity not by choice while the male characters that get naked mostly do it willingly.

Also Aikuro is a creep and having him take his clothes off in front of his student was not very pleasant to see.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I doubt all the guys who got naked when Ryuuko destroyed their outfits were happy with being naked.

Exactly. The show would have sent a whole different message at she liked wearing such clothing in the first place and didn't give a flying fuck what anyone else thought about it. But the show is pretty much saying, "Get naked for the male to gaze at you for power or wear what makes you feel comfortable and be powerless."

A tiny sprinkle of nearly naked males is a shit attempt at leveling the field in a show filled with female buttocks and breasts.

KLK is overflowing with fanservice and ridiculousness that I don't particularly care about "equal treatment" and accept the skew. It does confuse me that some of these folk sound like they were looking to this show to subvert anything. Of all things to consider, it's KLK, the blatantly unrepentant showy show about showiness?

All those pics come from somewhere between episode 8 and 17, the show was much more fanservice-heavy on the female side in the first episodes so if someone started to watch Kill la Kill and dropped it quickly because they didn't enjoy the fanservice, it's not that they "forgot" that the guys have some too, it's just that it wasn't there yet.

Un-anoning.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I tend to see this argument made in regards to stuff that doesn't really objectify men into caricatures so much as empower them into caricatures, making them ludicrously buff to reflect how mighty they are. This is the first time I've seen it made for male characters who actually seem objectified, and the first time I've seen it made for characters from anything Japanese. I suspect those are related.

I don't see how that counts as "male fan service" and not comic relief. I gain no sense of attraction from it whatsoever.
