Eh, there's always a risk of being disappointed when you take part in that kind of lottery. (Also that picture is the stuff of nightmares, holy shit)

I always wondered how writers felt when they got terrible art. Hopefully all writers are as nice about it!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL. Poor OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel your pain, OP. The art I got for my big bang was probably the worst in the entire fest.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The one time I participated in a bigbang:

1) My story was chosen last (maybe second to last?) by the artist
2) The artist in question dropped out like the day I was supposed to post
3) The replacement artist put together a photo-manip thing based on a brief description (i.e., without reading the fic) because "she didn't read slash".

And that was my first and last experience with a big bang :D

I haven't done a BB thing but when I used to be involved in groups, I tried out the fanart portion and for some reason I always choked and the recipient ended up with okay art. It wasn't my best and I always felt bad about it so I stopped participating soon after.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I always wonder about things like this. I see a lot of links to "wonderful beautiful amazing artwork!" in BB stories and click the link only to see truly astounding awful work. And I just think "Well, what choice did they have?" Because it's an odd position to be in. It's nice that people want to make art for your story, but it's super awkward when that artwork is awful.

Aw, I'm sorry. I'm of two minds about this. If it looks like the artist really tried, I'm okay with it. Like, if it's obviously a piece they worked on for a while and they gave it their best shot, sure, good for you fanartist! If, however, it's obvious they procrastinated until the due date and then slapped something together, welp. That's a problem. :|

(this is hypothetical, I've never successfully written a big bang so)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-15 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Am I the only writer that gets really nervous about fanartists thinking this about the fics they are given in colabs? I've done some bigbangs and a reverse bigbang or three, and every time I worry about whether the artist thinks my work is a piece of crap or not.

If my fandom had those, I wouldn't sign up for them either. But that's the risk you take, right? Even if it's just a fic exchange, you're never sure the fic you get will be good, so...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, the background used for this secret will never stop being funny.

That sucks OP, I'm really sorry that happened to you.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
I've gotten terrible art in all the big bangs I've participated in. Though I did get one lovely lovely perfect vid as well. But I was writing rarepairs in most of of them or AUs so it's not that big of a surprise.

Plus...and I hate to say this but it's true...when big bangs lets the artists see who the authors are and pick who they wants? Yeaaah, the best artists tend to flock to the BNFs.

I didn't even get my art for the last Big Bang I did... :\

(Not trying to one-up you, OP; it really sucks to pour your all into a story and then get lousy art for it. I just wanted to complain.)

I've been there before, OP.

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-16 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Granted, mine ended up not-very-good due to an unexpected time-crunch on the part of the artist rather than them being a terrible artist, but I still got some...not great art, and I know that the cause being a simply bad artist is a problem for a lot of writers, actually.

Don't give up on Big Bangs! Most artists who bother to enter these things are pretty good, and even if not, there is still an entire fic-half portion of the challenge to do that is its own form of fun and reward. :)

(a) Agreed with everyone re: PERFECT IMAGE CHOICE. Legit perfect.

(b) The last bb I did, my "art" was a banner that was clearly made in about 5 minutes, was turned in 2 days late, and had my name spelled wrong on it. (And it took the artist almost a week to correct it, too.) So...I feel your pain.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-16 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
And this is pretty much why I will never make art for anyone. I know I'm not the best artist, and I wouldn't want anyone to hate what I made, so instead I make nothing.

Ugh. You poor thing. I thought that I was going to receive crappy art for my last big bang, but it turned out to be that the rough drafts were really rough. The end results were much better, but I thought that I was going to have to suck it up and gush over the art regardless.

big bang artists take a risk too!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-17 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Just wanted to point out that artists take a big risk too when they participate in big bangs: the risk that the writer will drop out after the rough draft stage, and they'll be left with a piece of art that they spent ages on and that's now useless. It happened to me!

(Yes, of course the mods kindly said I could post anyway, but often big bang art makes no sense without the fic, if it's a cover, illustration, chapter headings…)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-17 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I can say from being on both sides, it is a great opportunity to be a part of the fandom and express yourself etc. Should it really matter if the art is bad because it's a collaboration and a free contribution to the fandom anyway?
Also, how is your writing? Are you how much better than the artist? Just sayin, don't think too highly of yourself. I'm sure if you signed up again they'll sign you with a different artist again.
