[Thor: Dark World]

Welp. If this is true about her death being used like that, then I think I'll pass on this film.

Same here. I'll get my Heimdall fix some other way.

I'd pass on it because it wasn't even that good.

Pretty much the only good parts where the Thor/Loki brother stuff and Frigga kicking ass. The plot was wtf and convoluted sci-fantasy bs and the Earth stuff was boring as shit. Jane is the worst and her and Thor have zero chemistry. I was getting episode 2 "I hate the sand" flashbacks during some of their "romance" scenes. Anyway, it wasn't that great.

She was protecting Jane, and the shit Jane had gotten into. Had she been alone she probably won't not have stopped to fight knowing, although badass, she's still mortal.

Did it effect Thor and Loki? Yes. It's their fucking mom. The same way Odin being fucked in the first movie effected that plot.

yeah, I haven't watched it yet also

Apparently, it doesn't matter anymore, because this is a fandom space on the internet! So courteous isn't required!

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Please, the movie was out in November. If you hadn't known by now she bit the dust, I feel sorry for you.

I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, I completely see the problem and it annoyed me. On the other hand, the scene was awesome and she was awesome.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. And there was the fact that her death wasn't immediately passed over. She got a big ass funeral that was incredibly beautiful. That said, I hated that they killed her off. My headcanon is that she was faking, because she knew that Thor and Loki would have to team-up, and it was the only way to ensure Loki's cooperation. (After all, she taught Loki all his other magic, seems logical that she taught him the lol-not-really-dead thing.)

+1. NGL, I loved all the Thor/Loki scenes, and Jane was adorable, and Darcy was funny (well, apparently a lot of people don't think so, but I did), and Frigga was a beautiful BAMF, but...the film still wasn't that great imo. Even with all that going for it, I just didn't think it was that exciting or good.

Still, what it IS is enough for me because Hemsworth.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ya know. This movie hasn't been out that long. Not all of us have been able to see it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
That damn dirty OP didn't warn for spoilers!

Spoiler warnings do not exist anymore. I was spoiled for her death before it even came out in the US. Sorry, but that's the hazard of frequenting fandom spaces on the internet.

I liked the emotions her death brought out in her various loved ones, but yup, that was a fridging.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-20 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Her being fridged was really sad. She was being so badass and then nope; Thor and Loki need some mommy angst to unite and propel the story froward. Bad writing imo.

[personal profile] nightscale 2014-02-20 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this so much, I was hoping to see more of her character this time around but nope, she was angst-fodder instead. She had a badass fight scene and her funeral was beautiful and touching but that's not going to stop me from being bitter about her death.

(Though I'm more pissed off by the fact that Frigga dies almost instantly from her wound, yet the bog-standard Asgardian in AoS gets stabbed in the heart and lives.)

Why is this a secret?

I was under the impression that just about everyone thinks this.

I didn't like the fact that the narrative reason for her death was to motivate male characters, but I did at least like that they gave her agency while they did it. It was her plan and her choice to take that risk. It would've been completely terrible if she'd just been murdered while fleeing or something.

More spoilers

*EVEN BIGGER SPOILERS BELOW*

Her death also allowed the film to conclude with the stinger of Loki-as-Odin usurping the throne, yet not leave viewers wondering, "So, wait, is Loki going to have sex with his mom?" So her death really performed two narrative functions, rather than just one.

Otoh, I still think they could and should have gotten around that. Hell, they could've just had her be grievously wounded and put her in some sort of medical coma projected to last a century or something; that would still be motivation for her sons, and allow them to avoid unfortunate implications with the Loki-as-Odin ending, but also be slightly less gross than killing off a major sympathetic female character when, in the same films, multiple sympathetic male characters (Fandral, Thor, Loki...am I missing anyone?) have been apparently mortally wounded and survived.
