What?

I need to show my ID every time I get my BC prescription, and I'm going to a goddamn university pharmacy. I can't think of a less fundy environment.

I'm in the UK, not the US, so I realise that things are different.

I've never had to present my ID for any prescription or procedure. I get the prescription from the doctor, fill in the relevant part of the form, and hand it to the pharmacist in whichever pharmacy I choose to go to, which depends on where I got the prescription from, and what time of day it is.

Even when I was on tamazepam, I was never asked for ID. Nor, to be relevant to the discussion, was I IDed when I went to get my long-term birth control replaced last month.

I think I'd be shocked if a pharmacist asked me for ID, especially for something that is not in danger of being used recreationally.

In Canada, if you go to a pharmacy you haven't gotten a scrip filled at before, they will give you the third degree re: allergies etc., and they will ask for photo ID to match up with your drug card(s). I have the new status card, which is photo ID, so I don't get carded for other ID since I got that; prior to, if it was a new pharmacy, I would get carded.

SA

this is regardless of what your scrip is for; I never got scheduled substances, this was for antibiotics and GERD meds.

They ask for your home address and phone number now as well, because it is required by my province apparently.

It's a barrel of lols just to get some damn antibiotics.

Any two out of the first line of your address, your postcode, your date of birth and either your home number or mobile number is the typical identity verification procedure in the UK, unless age-prohibited goods are involved. The jobcentre has a note on my file to not ask me for my number as I can never remember it without looking at my phone, which you're not meant to do. The details will be printed somewhere on the prescription you've handed over.

Dear people in non-US countries in this thread:

What? I'm not talking about feminism and I'm not even talking to you. I'm talking to the people replying to you with "In the UK..." and "In Canada..."

You responded to my post, though. There are ways of making that clearer.

And yeah, other people are relevant as long as they're making clear where they are. Because this is an international website.

Hell, you don't see MakingExcuses going "THIS THREAD IS FOR NORWEGIANS ONLY, YOUR RACECAR DRIVERS ARE IRRELEVANT.

the subject made it pretty clear tbh

Re: HI RADFEM ANON

The subject is "leaving this here without comment." Usually, when someone uses that header, it's taken to mean, "make of this what you wish."

jumping in a million hours later when nobody is even gonna see this but the anon chard was talking to changed the subject to "Dear people in non-US countries in this thread:"

HOWEVER, sometimes subject line changes are easy to overlook.

And anyone is allowed to comment on their own experiences no matter what country they live in.

That might be interesting. Y'all could talk about stuff that are specific to your countries and the rest of us could chime in with questions.

Like....you guys don't have professional racers?

But none of us are saying our healthcare is better... We are just mentioning the differences, which is natural on a website where we aren't all American. I just don't get why explaining a difference could be taking as someone saying something is better...

and I am guilty in starting a discussion in how medicine is prescribed differently in different parts of the world, but at no point in time did I say that my countries way is better, heck at one point I criticised it...

Re: Presented without Comment

I've never had to show ID for BC and I live in the US. I just get asked my birthday or address so they know there's no mix-up with names or anything.

I do, however, get carded for OTC cold medicine, which always throws me because that never used to be required and I don't get sick often enough that I remember the change. When the cashier asks for ID, my mind always goes to the most innocuous thing in my shopping basket, e.g. "I need to show ID for socks?"

Isn't one of the ingredients in cold medicine used to make a controlled substance of some kind?

Ayrt

Like other anon said, pseudoephedrine is used to make meth. These days, most places keep that stuff behind the pharmacy counter so it's harder to steal (you don't need a prescription to get it, but you have to go up and ask for it). I get carded for things like NyQuil, which I can just pull off the shelf. I've heard you can get drunk off of cough syrup, which I think is why they card for it, but I've had to show ID even in for the lozenge form. There I am, half delerious from a cold, and I'm like, "Driver's license? Bwuh? *snifflecough*"

Meth? That would explain why it's not commonly IDed for here in the UK. We just don't have as big a problem with meth addicts as parts of the US do. It is over here, just not in as great quantities.

da

I got carded for buying a diuretic once - I use them during my period to avoid bloating. Still not sure what the reasoning behind that one was.

Federal law requires pharmacies to card for cold medicine containing ephedrine or pseudoephedrine, which can be used to make methamphetamines. It is also common for pharmacies to card for medicines containing dextromethorphan, which teenagers try to get high on apparently.

I only have to show ID if it's the first time I am taking a prescription to that particular pharmacy - after that they're fine with double checking my address every other year.
