What?

I need to show my ID every time I get my BC prescription, and I'm going to a goddamn university pharmacy. I can't think of a less fundy environment.

I'm in the UK, not the US, so I realise that things are different.

I've never had to present my ID for any prescription or procedure. I get the prescription from the doctor, fill in the relevant part of the form, and hand it to the pharmacist in whichever pharmacy I choose to go to, which depends on where I got the prescription from, and what time of day it is.

Even when I was on tamazepam, I was never asked for ID. Nor, to be relevant to the discussion, was I IDed when I went to get my long-term birth control replaced last month.

I think I'd be shocked if a pharmacist asked me for ID, especially for something that is not in danger of being used recreationally.

In Canada, if you go to a pharmacy you haven't gotten a scrip filled at before, they will give you the third degree re: allergies etc., and they will ask for photo ID to match up with your drug card(s). I have the new status card, which is photo ID, so I don't get carded for other ID since I got that; prior to, if it was a new pharmacy, I would get carded.

I've never had to show ID for BC and I live in the US. I just get asked my birthday or address so they know there's no mix-up with names or anything.

I do, however, get carded for OTC cold medicine, which always throws me because that never used to be required and I don't get sick often enough that I remember the change. When the cashier asks for ID, my mind always goes to the most innocuous thing in my shopping basket, e.g. "I need to show ID for socks?"

I only have to show ID if it's the first time I am taking a prescription to that particular pharmacy - after that they're fine with double checking my address every other year.

Re: Presented without Comment

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
The law here in my state is that you have to present an ID to get controlled substances. But for birth control? That's sort of odd. I mean, maybe the pharmacist just wanted to verify it was for the person it was intended for? You never know what kind of bullshit you run into, especially with parents trying to be nosy about their kids' medications and stuff. (I work in a pharmacy and have run into that situation.) But if it was just the pharmacist being a douche, then that makes me sad, because it gives pharmacists a bad name. My husband is a pharmacist (and a damn good one at that) so I hate people tarnishing the profession like that.

Yeah, over here they ask you to verbally verify your address to make sure it's you (or I guess anyone who knows your address) but I've never been asked for ID.

If I'd had to pick up multiple prescriptions including birth control, and I'd been asked to provide ID I wouldn't have thought to ask which one it was for. I'd have just gotten out my drivers license.

I am on BC, and all they've ever done is ask for my birth date. Since we live next door to each other, for convenience sake sometimes my dad will run and pick up things for both houses in between grocery shopping trips, which is also a "family event." Sometimes he has to pick up my prescription for me. He's never had any problems getting it other than, you know, having to pick up a birth control prescription for his daughter.

I'll just sit in my corner being confused, I have to identify myself every time I pick up a prescription, no matter what it is for... That is one of three questions I always get, "What is your birthdate, then clarification on my name and sometimes my ID", "do you want a cheaper alternative?" and "do you know how to use your meds?"

Isn't it natural that the pharmacy wants to know who they give the meds to, I would assume that counted double if you are getting it covered through insurance*?

Slightly unrelated (and possibly stupid) question, but what do you guys actually mean when you say you have to wait for a prescription to be filled? Because when I go to my pharmacy they have everything ready and I don't have to wait (except in line) as in they are in the box with the name of the med and all the info about it, then they just print a sticker with my name and the information and directions my doctor wants me to have. Are those yellow container things they have on medical shows the ones they always give out? Or, what?

*That might be a slightly ignorant comment from me? I do realize not all Americans have insurance and so on, nor do I have any idea how it actually works. Every time I try to understand I just get confused and give up.

Do you call the pharmacy before picking up your prescriptions? Sometimes if I don't call before hand I have to wait a while for them to get everything together.

In the UK, you go get your prescription from the doctor/dentist, and it's got your name, address, phone number printed on it, with what you've been prescribed. You sign it in the right place, tick the box to say why you're exempt from paying for it if you are (in England, anyway), and then hand the slip over to the pharmacist. They'll then tell you it'll be ten/fifteen/twenty minutes, and you can either wait there or wander off to a different shop/department and come back. This gives them time to gather the needed medicine from their stocks, package it if it's not already (it'll be in blister packs already, but they might need to split a blister strip if you've not been prescribed a multiple of a full strip, e,g. 7 tablets of something that comes in strips of 5), print out labels for the packaging, and then another label for the paper bag they'll put your prescription in.

Those little yellow bottles (amber, really) aren't used for everything, but they are used a fair amount. What ansela_jonla said about the exact amount/dosage/whatever you are prescribed not always coming in a pre-packaged form and the pharmacy having to assemble it for you, as per your doctor's instructions, is true for the US, as well. I'd have to ask my former pharmacy technician friend, but I think a lot of stuff gets shipped to pharmacies in bulk and they break it down into individual prescriptions as they come in.

My doctor's office can send a prescription straight to a pharmacy of my choosing and then I get an automated phone message telling me it's ready and I can go pick it up at my leisure. If I am physically taking a prescription slip to a pharmacy, as long as they have what I need in stock, they can fill it within about 5 or 10 minutes (depends on how busy they are) and I just browse the store until they call my name. I can also drop off a prescription request and tell them I'll be back later, if I don't have time to wait.

I don't get prescriptions filled often, but it all depends.

What happens is that I go to the doctor, they fill out a prescription blank with the dosage and what medicine and instructions. They call it to the pharmacy and then I have to show the pharmacist the prescription and they will put the medicine together. They also ask if I'm taking any other drugs and double check that nothing will conflict. Sometimes the pharmacy doesn't have the correct dosage and will send me elsewhere (Or make me split pills)

The reason it takes longer is if they are busy, they are also refilling prescriptions that are on a refillable basis or they have to mix some of the children's liquid drugs. A pharmacist would be able to explain better why it takes so long, but I usually don't wait much.

I don't want to click - someone sum up?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Can someone sum up what this link goes to? I gather it's something about birth control and IDs but anyone want to fill in the blanks?

In the future, people who post links it'd be awesome if you'd just give a quick one or two sentence summary to what the hell you want to talk about.

Re: I don't want to click - someone sum up?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-25 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
The link itself is seven sentences long, lazy!anon. Summary is someone is crabbing somewhere about having to show id to get their birth control.

I've always had to show my ID for any prescription, including BC. I've lived in Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida, Colorado, Oklahoma, Nebraska, California, Arizona, and Texas. I think I'm forgetting one or two places, but you get the point. I think it's strange if someone doesn't have to show ID to pick up a prescription.

Re: Presented without Comment

Reading the original post (but ignoring most of the comments because I have no energy for that kind of wank right now), it is pretty suspicious that, when she asked, the pharmacist specified that he needed to see ID for the birth control, not the percocet or the antibiotic or for all of her prescriptions together. It's one thing to have a blanket policy of asking for ID for all prescriptions and another to demand it for certain prescriptions that are not controlled substances and that have a history of people trying to restrict in any way they think they can get away with.

The "Everybody is a Mormon atheist misogynist!" wank, though... blah.
