This is the big reason I've never done cosplay. I was primed to think this way growing up (bullies), and then getting more into fandom and finding it's a magnification of media standards of "attractive" persons, and therefore not a space where everyone who loves the material can enjoy it the same way, was discouraging. Anyway, I empathize completely.

I totally agree with those who have said the execution of the costume is what makes or breaks it, but when it feels like most of the comments/looks you get are the gross, negative ones, it's not the easiest day to get through.

That scene between Data and McCoy leaves me in tears every time.

Me too! :D

And everything behind them. And the stuff below that. And the part above them. And the parts inside the behind-the-lips-part. It's all just so awesome!

AHAHA OMG you people are trying too hard. How dare she doesn't think ahead about what she says in a 10 minutes interview! How dare she doesn't think about all the way what she says can be interpreted. HOW DARE SHE DOESN'T KNOW ALL THE RIGHT TUMBLR SPEECH WAYS, EVEN IF IT CHANGES EVERY FUCKING WEEK.

Just say you don't like the girl and stop trying to search for fucking excuses.

You are the reason why nobody takes SJ seriously. JUst get your head out of tumblr and LJ and welcome to the real world.

AYRT

Ouch, I'm sorry you went through all that. I won't lie, I haven't heard a whole lot of good things about the Southern Baptists [my mother's family was S.B. and I've heard some...interesting stories].

Yeah, the new pope seems pretty awesome! While I'll admit, that yeah. The church's current stance on gay rights/women sucks, and I'm looking forward to that changing, albeit slowly. I think Pope Francis is what the Church needs right now, if nothing else to bring it's focus back on to where it should be.

And, for whatever it's worth, you've always seemed like a awesome, good, person. And I think that'll count more for where you end up than following any strict "Do this, this and this!" rules will.

This is a new(ish) thing which should stop. It's not as hip as you think it is.

The short answer is no. That is not what I meant.

Re: Working WTFs

[personal profile] pantasma 2014-03-05 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
A customer walked back up to me after I helped her decide between a couple things to say, "When I first saw you, I didn't think you look like a (big-popular-lingerie-store) girl at all. What were you in your other life?"

[KEEP SMILING, DAMN YOU!] "Well, I'm studying to be a music teacher, have taught my own primary ensembles, and I'm currently volunteering teaching secondary choirs."

"Oh, you're a student. I see. Well, it's nice to have a job at some point in your life."

"Yes, especially when you're trying to pay for school."

She said it like I such a good little girl for not making daddy pay all my bills.

And having to just keep smiling the whole time while she's talking about it like it's the END OF MY LIFE to be working there. I managed not to ~inform~ her that I make a point of looking very different from my peers in case someone who's (let's just say) not the image my employer displays might feel more comfortable not fitting their mold.

Oh my gosh, you are an amazing person. As someone who benefits from a few of those checkout-donations organizations, I appreciate your contribution. (I know this sounds kinda weird and stuffy, but I always want to thank people when I see them do it, but I don't want to be sketchy...)

I'm...not going to lie, that article kind of confuses me. Like, not with what they're saying about how things are there - but with how they seem to think things work here [in the US].

For example, the whole "going on a date before getting to know them" thing doesn't...really happen much where I live? Most people are friends before dating [or, at the very least know each other relatively well], and if we don't we've probably at the very least been talking for quite a while before hand so we at least know something about each other. I mean, I guess that could be a regional thing, but I'm not sure I've ever met anyone whose gotten into a relationship without knowing each other before dating.

I just pirate. Since i'm already engaging in copyright infringement by selling fanart, I might as well engage in more of it.

I take it you haven't watched Kill la Kill? Because... wait, let me just show you:

The guys in this anime are objectified as well and it's pretty even in how they're presented. Both guys and girls have "transformation sequences" where you can see them naked. One character in particular (Aikuro) undresses almost every episode.

I do understand the criticism, but KLK isn't just another neckbeard fodder.

I love it because of the plot and because there's fanservice for everyone, not just for guys. And that is refreshing. It might not look that way from the first episode, but it is. (btw. I dropped it after the first and picked it up again after a couple of weeks)

There's a lot of fanservice for girls as well in KLK. I'm gonna copy/paste what I replied to someone else with:

I do understand the criticism, but KLK isn't just another neckbeard fodder. I'd say it's pretty evenly split between the male and female characters (actually, I've seen more (half-) naked guys in KLK than girls) and there is a reason for all the weird clothes and lack of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
THIS.

I kinda guessed it might be her, but I wasn't sure until someone confirmed it on the thread.

I wonder how many of the people commenting here have actually watched the show because the male characters are pretty much as often seen naked as the female characters. If I'm not remembering it completely wrong, I've seen more male characters (half-) naked than the female characters.

I mean, we have:

- Aikuro Mikisugi undressing pretty much every chance he can get, showing us his glowing nipples (and later on his glowing penis and anus?):

- male characters who have transformation sequences, just like the girls, where we can see their naked bodies:

+

- the "nudist beach" organization whose members wear basically nothing (except for some waist belts with ammunition(?)) and most of the characters we see running around like that are male:

Also this, for no reason other than fanservice:

Don't get me wrong, I'm usually also one of the first people to be annoyed about too much fanservice for neckbeards, but KLK is pretty even in their fanservice.

It amazes me how alarmist, oversensitive, out-of-touch, and just fucking angry at every little thing Tumblr SJWs are. How on earth do these people function in the real world or have friends???

Our kettle leaks and nobody wipes away the water so it drips on the floor and I never see it before stepping in it.

The way raw cabbage makes your mouth sting if you eat enough of it. Because there is no such thing as too much raw cabbage, nom nom.

I'm depressed at the moment so I sleep a lot, but it never makes me feel rested.

NO THIS IS GOOD AND THOROUGH while mine was silly and quick and riddled with my phone constantly turning 'of' into 'if' why does it do that. You are an ace Australian, M8

Urban legends - do you think Wolf Creek counts yet? Also now that I think about it there's the Harold Holt conspiracies but that's not very urban legend-y. I wanna say things like tourists will always get lost and die in X location but it tends to be true so uh...

Hadn't realised the High Court had thrown the marriage out AGAIN but I shouldn't be surprised :(

Yeah I was more thinking of the snow-slush Canberra got on the roads. 'bout the closest to snow I could think of but really it was white-quickly-turned-brown slush.

Don't even really get frost where I am now....but considering I don't have a heater I am not heart broken over this.

But, one day, I will have my snowman...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sure, but that's totally different from the meaning of "whitewashing" in the fandom SJ sense.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think there's always a difference between "selling fanwork you made" and "being commissioned to create fanwork". The first one is illegal where I live, but I guess you could find a loophole with the second because you get paid for the work/time you put into it and not just for selling copyrighted material you already created.

So getting paid by people for showing them a fanfic you already wrote? No.
Getting commissioned by people to write that one fanfic they want to read? Yes.

And I've actually seen a lot of people do fanfic commissions. I don't see how that is such a revolutionary new concept?
