Maybe anon had misread and thought UK or Aus 14-16?
That still wouldn't be considered as skinny where I live, but it's not big either.

Depends what you're looking for. Tradtional art supplies are smaller and easier to shoplift (if you're not going for canvases or easels. With tablets, I think home invasion might work better :D

I see that argument with Wonder Woman all the time. And in some cases, that argument works, depends on the artist and the writer. Other times? Even SHE is being drawn to titillate men.

You'd think that, but even though I've done commissions before, the motivation will drop, even with the expectation of money.

And it's due in part because you don't wanna take too long, which can be a rush thing going on, the art idea may be bleh and you don't wanna draw it, but have to, and various other things that can get in the way and make the motivation go down.

Money can be a great motivator!! But the responsibility that goes with it can dampen it severely.

Buy a monoprice tablet!! I got a decent one, in the mid to smallish range with programmable buttons (far more than an intutos has) that was just a tad over $50. And it works great. Only downside is the tablet pen has no eraser.

Re: Working WTFs

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2014-03-05 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I work web development for a college... which employs a shockingly huge amount of people who are absolutely clueless when it comes to computers and the internet. I could tell a dozen or so stories just about ONE PERSON in a particular department who thinks I'm a wizard and has literally asked my brother what my favorite kind of candy is because she wants to buy me some because I'm so amazing or something for... for UPDATING HER DEPARTMENT'S PAGE.

But I will tell a story about a different department because my boss and I were so completely confused... and then we laughed our butts off.

A couple years ago, I made a tool for a particular department that generated a page via PHP/mySQL/javascript, and there were a couple other pages where data could be entered to go on that page. The data entry pages were coded so that it could only be accessed if you were logged in and had certain credentials. And if you had those credentials AND the credentials indicating you were either one of us web developers or the department head, then you had a few other administrative options.

(tl;dr: If you're logged in as the department head, you get extra options on data entry pages for a tool I made.)

So like a year later, the department switched heads, and they needed the associated login credentials changed from one person - we'll say J - to another person - we'll say S. Easy enough, my boss handles those things, and he added S to the admin group, and left J on for training.

A couple months later, J emailed us and was all "Why isn't S seeing the same pages I'm seeing? S can't use the tool as we need it to be used!" Well, that was sort of unclear, so we asked for details, which eventually resulted in J sending a image consisting of two screencaps. One was the page she had been getting, the other was the page S had been getting. So my boss forwarded it to me, since this was my project, and I took a look at it... and was like "...wtf? Why is this table even showing up on this page? .........Wait a minute......."

One of the screencaps included the menu bar of the browser, which included the URL. The other screencap? Was what should appear on one of the OTHER data entry pages.

The reason they were seeing different pages was because THEY WERE LOOKING AT DIFFERENT PAGES.

I told my boss there was no way I could reply to this tactfully without snark/uncontrollable laughter, and he was gracious enough to give them an explanation, and we heard no argument afterwards - so indeed, that was apparently all the problem was.

Re: What Time of Day Does the Mail Arrive?

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-03-05 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Usually between 11 am-12 pm for us.

We've a got a mail lady who never bothers to come to our door anymore if we have packages. We're both night shifters, so we're not usually up until between noon and 2.

Which pisses me off cause, hell, she never knows when we're awake!! I called in to complain one day cause I was up early enough for her to stop by and she didn't once make it to the apartment. I had her supervisor turn her around.

May have been a bitch thing to do, but lady, I was waiting on a package you didn't even try and bother to deliver cause you assumed we wouldn't be up. You have a job to do, do it. even if there's a pattern, do it still, cause you never know when someone is up and waiting on a package, especially if it may be something important.

Those are the only words I have issues with though, that and the name of the city Sikeston, MO. People will pronounce that as Sick-eston. It drives me nuts, but over all? Not usually a problem. Just certain words do not sound right and when I leave my area it grates on me something fierce.

Yeah kinda on the heavy side, but not like, super huge.

We have a county in my state that is spelled Lafayette. Normally, it's pronounced as the French word it is, but in this place, you pronounce it as La-FAY-ette. Or people will get really miffed.

I would love fem!Thorin to be exactly the same honestly. Why don't female characters get to be tragically flawed in the same way as their male counterparts, dammit.

But that's her sense of humor...

Re: Spelling "women" as "womxn."

[personal profile] otakugal15 2014-03-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not pagan and I've never been in any circles with that. I've always seen it as derogatory cause I've only ever seen it spelled that way online from dudebros and neckbeards.

at least in ONE place its got a good connotation, but outside that, it's always been pretty negative. :/

LOL. If that's "problematic" then.. I feel sorry for you. Lear to take a joke and know when someone isn't serious about everything, your life is gonna be hard otherwise.

NO NEED FOR SELLING IT, SHE IS FUCKING FLAWLESS HUMAN BEING

(and by that I mean the opposite and it makes her perfect.)

Never watched Lost or read Tolkien. Saw an interview with the actress just before the movie was released and thought she was fun and engaging. Loved Tauriel. She's about the only thing worth looking forward to in the third movie.

Heading off the 'you sound white' comments, maybe rather than actual excusing? (Though I suspect it's actually both.)

galerian_ash was very definitely saying that if you need the prospect of reward to motivate you to do creative work, you're not really a creator, just a moneygrubber.

We called them "Freshmeat." :P

Very affectionately, of course.

I have a massive hatred for people who fidget or worse, tap their fingers during a conversation. It screams "hurry up, my time is too valuable to listen to you" and it immediately makes me second-guess everything I say in fear that they'll cut me off.

The worst was a guy who had a very loud clock in his office...and tapped his fingers in time to its ticking. To this day, I'm not sure how I managed not to throw that fucking clock through the window.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that I hated the actress as well as the fact that she played Kate from Lost, but turns out I just hated Kate.

Re: I'm going to regret this

[personal profile] pelespen 2014-03-05 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed (and man, am I late to this party). We as consumers tend to be so far removed from actor culture, and that's what feeds this obsession with a group of people that are ultimately just doing their jobs. It's a fucking weird job, to be certain - being in the public eye, having every little thing you do, say, and wear scrutinized constantly. It takes a certain kind of personality to do that job, aside from actual talent.

Idunno, I guess I'm old and mellow. I just shake my head at all this scree.
