I ship Buffy/happiness.

Which means I ship her with no one from the show.

So much this.

Yeeeeup.

I mean, I like Buffy/Spike to watch. For me, it's the most dynamic (that is, it's messed up, but also interesting, and Spike is one of my favorite characters to watch in emotional extremes), but I'm surprised when anyone is surprised that SMG doesn't like Spuffy, or that it's not someone's cup of tea--because there are plenty of reasons for it not to be.

But if the question is "Who is best for Buffy?" then the answer out of the options we're given is "None of them."

idk I think she could make it work with Tara

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've always thought she was better forever alone.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Spuffy fans think it's ~omg twu wuv~ when really the whole point was to show that Buffy had hit rock bottom and was seriously fucked up by everything that had happened to her. I'm glad at least SMG knows that, even if so many of the fans don't.

/not a Buffy/Angel shipper

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
+ a lot, although it was so crappily written that who knows what the writers thought in the end?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Season 6, yes. Rock bottom, no question.

Season 7 ... I disagree. (So do Season 8 and 9 ... )

To me soulless Spike managed (at times) to be better/less unselfish than ensouled Angel ever was, so he gets my vote. (Also Joss' vote, iirc.)

Link for interview? because not wanting to be manipulated into picking a particular option does NOT equate to rejecting that option.

I was surprised by the fan reaction. I always thought Buffy/Angel was a pretty popular ship, but then again, I wasn't in the fandom and not that big of a fan of the show.

Either way, the reaction was kind of weird. I think it was the reaction people were expecting Ron/Hermione shippers to react with JK Rowling backtracking on the way Ron and Hermione ended up (but actually she didn't), except on the most part most HP fans were like, "Over it, don't really care."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I shipped Spuffy in a 'because it's wrong' kind of way because it was interesting and also James Marsters looks really good without a shirt, but in no way was it true love or a healthy relationship, and when I tried to write the pairing as fluffy for a gift fic it was just a trainwreck. Buffy obviously never got over Angel, a relationship which also has its issues, but that the love was real is basically proven by the fact that Angel does walk away when that's what's best for Buffy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I wouldn't actually say that proves the love is more real. But maybe that's because I'm too aware of meta issues like "going to my spinoff series, see ya later."

Just like people bitching about Giles leaving Buffy in S6, and there are in-story reasons "doin it for you own good, Buffy" and real-world reasons like ASH wants to move back home.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I seriously hated Angel on Buffy. Loved him on Angel, but HATED him on Buffy.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. On his own show, he was such a goofball that I couldn't help but love him. On Buffy though, he was unbearable. And his scenes with Buffy, ugh.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I always felt like Angel developed more of a personality on his own show. On Buffy he often just felt like a plot point to further develop Buffy as a character. He was kinda fun as Angelus and we saw some backstory there, but he didn't really become a full character until he was on his own.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Ughhh, Angel on Buffy was just a "awwww poor meeee" type designed to get the girls crazy, though the actor's permanent expression kind of ties into that too. I liked watching Spuffy a lot more, though I don't ship anyone with Buffy, girl is better off without any of them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
+1. Angel actually had a real personality on his own show vs his broody, mysterious guy on BTVS. What's more, when they shoe-horned him into the finale (or the second last ep, can't remember) - who WAS that guy? Because it certainly wasn't the Angel who'd just lived through a wrenching storyline on his show.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
pfft, like Sarah's opinion is something new, it's been known for decades. plus, she has the right to have an opinion. it doesn't influence the canon in any way tho.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I didn't get this. Sarah prefers Spike or Angel then? Just curious.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
I think she prefers acknowledging how fucked up Spike/Buffy was and not promoting it as a healthy relationship as some Spuffy fans seem to think it is.

Plus, she did date David once upon a time and also, as has been said, she and James were seriously messed up by having to shoot the attempted rape scene in S6.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Spuffy and whatever the Angel/Buffy ship name is (Bung? Anuff? Anguff? Buffel? There is no good name).

Neither were good for Buffy in the long run. She's better as a free bitch.

SMG opinion is valid. Her preference to Angel/Buffy, might have to do with the fact that she dated David. As well, she has gone on record (with James) about hating the rape scene with Spike (the difficulties and unease of shooting that scene).

I prefer Spuffy, even in s6, but that's because James Marsters is obscenely hot with bleached hair, no shirt, and Spike's sad attempts at manpain. And because Angel honestly always creeped me out more than Spike - at least Spike is upfront about how much of a loser he is. And also I always tend to gravitate towards ships with baggage/issues/history.

I also really ship s7 Spuffy because those are two people who have grown, a lot, and although there's still a lot of baggage and fear between them, Spike came to care deeply for Buffy (I felt), and Buffy was around him/with him from a place that wasn't complete and utter self-loathing. And it felt more mature and calmer, after he got over the whole tearing his hair out and singing bit.

Idk I just never felt like Angel should have been more than a fling either, and the only way I can get past gritting my teeth and screaming at Buffy to get over him is because I know that he represents the First Love of teenagers in general, and that can be hard (especially when torn apart so violently as Angel and Buffy were, rather than running its course and petering out).

Buffy/Faith. None of her canon romances got under my skin like that one. (Though I did love parts of the Buffy/Angel arc.)
