I'd say that's probably way too complicated a character design to carry through to the actual show (mostly her hair, though)

You really need take off your nostalgia glasses and look at the promotional art for the first anime there, chief. Or heck, any of the damn animation for the first season of BSSM. It wasn't that great. This is actually better.

It looks just like a digitized version of Naoko's art, and tbh if that's what the anime is going to look like I'm not interested at all. As much as she inspired me when I was a kid, Naoko isn't a very good artist, (anyone check out the character bios on the official site? Apparently the senshi don't have hips or genitals, just legs sprouting from their navels.)

I was really hoping for something more in-line with the old anime, design-wise, just with crisper, brighter, more detailed and fluid animation. Or even a more modern 'moe' look would be fine. This pic just looks washed out and anatomically awkward. :(

I think it's beautiful, and it's the first anime image I've seen for the series that really LOOKS like the manga style.

I like the image, but I'm a little worried because I always thought the manga designs while very pretty looked really hard to animate.

Yeah, I don't like it either. The mash-up between manga and anime brings out the worst in both, imo, and it looks like it's trying too hard to be Takeuchi's style and modern anime at the same time. The coloring is what I dislike the most--that soft airbrush coloring from the manga looked great, but in this image it's so bland and flat that it just looks like an amateur coloring job. Also the hair in the promo pic is ridiculous. So. Yes. I agree, OP.

It's interesting to me that people think this is what the actual animation will look like. I don't really think that Toei has the money to animate it like that. It just doesn't look like an actual character design to me but a highly digitized rendering of Naoko's artwork.

I would hope that it would look like the manga but without the wonky anatomy (hands, legs, fingers) that the manga had. Even in the new image, the reaching arm looks longer than her right arm. Yikes.

I'm glad it's not moe but I'll have to see it animated to really make a judgement call on it.

I don't mind the top part of that artwork, but the bottom half with her legs looks...weird. IDK, it's just an odd pose. Anyway, I'd wait to freak out about the art until we have more than a single promo image.

I'm trying not to get too excited or too pessimistic about new Sailor Moon. I hope it will be good, this art doesn't look too terrible, but there's more to a show than character designs.

I think it's very pretty, I just don't want the legs to go on for miles and be approximately the length of Japan by the time the story's over. Let some stuff stay in the manga.

I don't have any strong feelings on it, but it looks to me like they're taking their style more from the manga.

I feel like there's not enough space for her bum under there, based on where her hips must be to be in that position, and the split between her legs that you can see under her skirt.

It didn't occur to me that promo art isn't always the same style as what the anime is, thanks to everyone for pointing that out!
I really just hope to see the anime with normal proportioned characters with the crisp brightness we have now. If they can make the manga's style look good, all the power to them!

But I still think this picture is rather poor quality for anything official, hopefully they'll release more images in the future.

I mean it's just okay. It doesn't seem that different from the old anime to me.

I doubt that's what the final animation will look like exactly anyway.

Eh, I'm pretty okay with Naoko's artwork, fucked up anatomy aside.
But as long as it retains the manga's storyline (and signs are heavily pointing that it will), I couldn't give less of a shit.
I hope it retains some of the backgrounds and effects from the manga, as well, like actually animating Saturn's Death Reborn Revolution, or some of the really nice stuff from the Stars arc.
