Of course it's the canon -- it's the original stories, as written by the real author. It doesn't matter whether or not you find it to be "dumb"; it is the original and canonical Sherlock Holmes.

Yes, yes, this is true, quite.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-25 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! That is literally what canon means.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
...um, do you understand what the word "canon" means?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically not quite what fandom seems to think it means, but yeah, I wondered the same thing.

(I accidentally used the word "canon" in a paper once. My 90 year old professor was so confused, because in context of literature it made no sense...)

Okay -- I assure you I'm not saying this out of bias, because I totally understand how people might not like the stories, but this secret? The way it's phrased? This is definitely a troll secret.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I like how you're mad people compare it to the bible. Because that's a piece of literature without flaw.

Uh sorry. My bullshit meter's going off at 100% certainty. This is not your real opinion. Not that it's impossible for someone to hate Sherlock Holmes, but this particular secret definitely isn't genuine. Sorry man. Better luck next time?

/also HDU only Sherlock Holmes fans are allowed to mock the milk drinking snake. It's not funny without affection!

And the 40 stories that don't have anything as ridiculous as a milk-drinking snake in them? How about those?

And how is that even a criticism? There are no adaptations that are less ridiculous/outlandish than the stories. AND The Speckled Band is one of the best of all SH stories.

Okay. Allowing for the fact that this is probably a troll secret and moving on, what adaptations of Holmes have you seen with strong plots? Because faithful adaptations will run into the same problems as the originals (though some of them try to fix the more overt Victorian misunderstandings of science, etc), but non-faithful adaptations also seem to have pretty weak mysteries.

Of all the ones I've seen, the best (more or less) original mysteries I've seen in Holmes adaptations are 'Study in Pink' (none of the rest of the Sherlock plots, they tend towards rampant sensationalism without much substance, but SiP was actually a decent twist), and possibly the WWI-comes-early plot from Game of Shadows, if only because it was eerily plausible sounding.

Anyone else make an argument for stronger adaptation plots?

While I disagree with your opinion on the stories themselves, I'm with you 100% on the silly reactions of the fandom to people preferring adaptions to them. There are definitely some sticks up some butts, and I find the elitism much more tiring than the overzealous squee in the fandoms of the adaptations.

I've seen reviews for a movie that was made in the seventies that featured a snake drinking milk; apparently this was a common belief until recently. Given that Holmes was written in the late 1800-early 1900's, maybe you should give Doyle a little slack.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait this is a troll secret? Because I agree with it. I mean I never read the snake one but I distinctly remember someone who was obviously called out of his house so the bad guy could use his house for bank robbery. Which I saw after 3 paragraphs into the story.

Granted, Speckled Band is a bit silly, but I look at it like any show that has a "mystery of the week/monster of the week" format: it's not the mystery or monster per se that's interesting, it's the character interactions.

And...the modern adaptations are...not dumb? That's pretty funny, considering the actionsplosion RDJ movies.

Ok, I'm going to be nice here.
I think a lot of people read Doyle's stories for Exciting Mystery #12 and are disapointed because they prognosticate the solution halfway through.
Pick up a Holmes story and try reading it as Watson going on about how much fun him and his friend have. It's not about finding a solution to a mystery, it's not about sudden plot turns and endings that everyone keeps quiet on for fear of spoilers. It's about Holmes and Watson.

Haha, this brings back memories of listening at bedtime to a set of Sherlock Holmes stories on cassette (which should give you an idea of how long ago this was) and when it got to the big reveal of that story I wanted to sit up and shout "Snakes don't drink milk! What is wrong with you!" at the tape deck. Of course I didn't, because I was in bed and supposed to be falling asleep. But that fucking snake bothered me so much. XD

I vaguely remember most of the other stories holding together better than that one, though. Hound of the Baskervilles comes to mind. If you only tried the one story, you might want to give some other ones a go?
