Venting

Walmart told me at the end of my shift that they had to let me go because...well when I was training for the job I signed up for, in the backroom, I had a sort of a panicky reaction to going on the ladders. My trainer asked me if I was afraid of heights and when I said yes, she took me to Personnel and said I couldn't do this job if I was afraid of heights and told me to go back to working the register.

They didn't make accommodations or tried to work around it. It was just one try and bam, done. I suppose I should have insisted on giving it another go but I dunno.

They said because it was a temp job that they couldn't change me to another position like what they did at another Walmart, but I could try to reapply in 30 days.

I feel pretty down, I looked for 8 months and now I have to go back to looking, all because of not being able to climb a ladder. I just hope I can get back there, or find another job.

I feel like a shitty employee,I did my best at the register hoping it would make up for it. It just wasn't good enough.

(some of my friends suggested it might have been discrimination and I should call HQ. I did tell them I had an autism spectrum disorder when I hired because I was wondering if that would be a factor on whether I might be kept after the temp position was over and they said it wouldn't I just want to try reapplying in 30 days just to see if I'll stand a chance. They did tell me that they weren't disciplining me and it was a safety thing)

All in all, it's really disappointing. I was so happy.

That sucks, I agree. I'd be bummed too. That said, they probably would have ended up trying to find a way to get me down; I have this terrible habit of deciding "this is the time I won't be a fucking wimp" and then freezing as soon as I realise that I'm up high.

However, to play devil's advocate here, if the job involves some working at heights, such as up the ladders (I assume to get to stock on the top shelves?), then you're not a suitable candidate if you panic in that situation.

Was working at heights/up ladders mentioned in the job ad at all? It seems like something that should be, due to how common a fear of height is, but being a jobseeker myself, I know just how crap some job ads can be with details (such as all the jobs that don't mention that you need a bleeding car).

It was that's the thing, and I thought I could do it. But....I just freaked out the first time I got on, and they decided I couldn't do it.

Maybe I should have said "hey it's been a long time since I've done this...maybe I could try harder?".

It's been my experience that Walmart will fire anyone at the drop of a hat because new employees are so easy for them to come by. I'm sorry it happened. :(

Re: Venting

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-03-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
ah...well I've had a good experience with them so I guess that's why I'm confused.

I worked there for a year last time.

This. Especially in this job market. Labor is expendable :/

Re: Venting

Don't take it personally, Walmart sucks to work for. I was denied breaks, injured on the floor and told to shut up about it, made to pick up the slack for lazy cashiers who had an in with personnel, etc. I mean, one cashier smoked pot ON PREMISE. He would come back to the register completely high as a kite, reeking of pot and would stare off into space, and he would still get more hours than me.

Good luck and hang in there!

I'm sorry all that happened *hug*.

I just hope I find a job somewhere I need it to pay for medicines.

Thanks very much, I hope I have better luck in the future.

Would you have been willing to try to work on your fear if they had given you that option?

I'm considering applying for an internship that says you need to be comfortable around ladders. If I go for it then I'm going to do my best to get past my own fear of heights, but still if someone asked me if I was afraid of heights I would answer yes. Doesn't mean I wouldn't try to work on that problem so I would be pretty upset if they let me go immediately after hearing that.

I like to think I would have I guess I just accepted them redirecting me because I thought they would do like the last place did and just shift me to another job.

That was my mistake I guess.

yeah temps are always treating like shit because we're literally disposable. sorry for what happened though, their excuse seems really shitty. you don't get paid enough to make yourself that uncomfortable. i hope you find someplace better to work for, that'll be understanding of your comfort zone.

Re: Venting

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-03-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah.

I guess I'll avoid temp positions in the future.

I hope so too, thanks.

I worked at the Walmart deli for a while, with a man who had some very clear anger issues and possibly some memory ones. He would leave slicers running unattended, would leave his station randomly (oftentimes leaving me as the only person at the entire counter, hot and cold sides both), once threw a mop across the room at me when I asked him to take care of a small oil spill since I was on an order, the list goes on forever. I finally went to my manager to talk to her about it, and somehow she decided I needed to be let go. I was so stunned I didn't even know what to say.

Needless to say I've not gone back since. But I do tell everyone I know that we were told never to bother actually changing our frying oil. Don't eat fried shit from Walmart.

Good luck with the job-hunting, OP. You didn't do anything wrong.

Wow...I think I'll remember that one. I know I have a friend with a long list of grievances about Walmart. even my brother says they don't have much of a good rep with anybody.

Thanks.

That really sucks. I know there are places that will work around issues with individual employees - when I worked at Walgreens, I had a lot of coworkers who were under 18 and couldn't operate the box compactor or work certain shifts, and I've seen cashiers at Target who get to sit on stools or who wear wrist braces. I had a friend who worked at a grocery store that would hire kids as young as 14 and those 14 year-olds were not legally allowed to - I kid you not - move or otherwise handle 5 gallon buckets (you know - the ones with the picture of the baby falling head-first into the bucket at drowning) so if they needed a bucket moved, they had to go find another employee and the employee was supposed to help them if at all possible.

I suppose it's like others have said: it's easier for Walmart to hire new people that make accommodations for the people they have. Anyway, good luck anon! If I were you, I wouldn't even try to go back to Walmart if I had any choice.

Re: Venting

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-03-25 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah...I'll try looking for other places, but...maybe I'm stupid or just desperate. If I can't find anything else I'd try there, just to see if being a non-temp is any better. But really I'm looking for a job because I really have to.

I need a job for medicine. For insurance.

Thanks.

I'm sorry. That's really shitty, but it's Walmart. Like others have said, they don't care because temp employees are cheap expendable labor.

Once when I was seasonal, I witnessed CSMs denying a 7-months-pregnant cashier a stool. Seriously, how much would it have killed them to let her sit at her register? At Christmas, no less? Fuckin Walmart.

Good luck to you. I hope you get something better.

Thanks.

Wow that's horrible. :< on Christmas too? Dang.

I hope so too. I feel lately like no other place seems to want me.

augh, that's so frustrating. What a shitty reason to be fired. I'm sorry and I hope your luck gets better.

Re: Venting

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Woaw. That sucks. :/

I think, yes, in hindsight maybe you saying, "Yes, I'm afraid of heights but I'd still like to give it a go." would have made a difference. Talking from the view of an employer, having someone say they can't do something or having someone say I'm not sure I can do this but I will give it a go, the latter makes a far better impression.
Also, I admire you for saying outright that you've got an autism spectrum disorder, but maybe in future just keep it to yourself because it could make people wary. Really, it's not their business anyway. As long as you do a good job, they shouldn't need to know.
Having said all that, looking at the other comments you're probably better of not working at Walmart.

Chalk it up to experience. Good luck with the job search!

Re: Venting

[personal profile] jaybie_jarrett 2014-03-26 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah....that's true.

and yeah I definitely think I'll keep that under wraps for a little longer. and I think that I'm going to be more secretive about that. I'd actually like to see if they ever figure it out. Honestly sometimes I feel like I give off 'vibes' that give it away or I just make it obvious sometimes.

I think I want to try working somewhere else. I'll maybe apply at Wallyworld as a last resort. But otherwise , best to try other things.

Thank you!
