I can't say for sure that I've seen it myself, but Tumblr feminists going 'Make-up is a social construct made up by the patriarchy!' doesn't sound like anything unusual.

Tumblr feminists going 'Makeup makes me POWERFUL! Men are ttly terrified of my mad vamp winged eyeliner' is also nothing unusual.

Actually, Tumblr feminists are much more likely to talk about "lipstick as red as the blood of your enemies" and "eyeliner so sharp you could kill a man" and this really artificial ~weaponized femininity~ stuff. Because people in the real world really think red lipstick = ultimate lady power.

Oh I get that, but going the other way and contradicting each other is pretty normal, so it doesn't seem totally unlikely to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
True, it's just less common among the more mainstream feminist bloggers, at least from what I've seen.

I don't understand weaponized femininity at all. It's really funny because like on my dash, I never saw people actually like talking about it as a thing. It was all people critiquing it so I got like a weird like third hand idea of what it is, and I'm just really confused.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it drives me nuts. I understand that it's a reaction to a lot of women getting bullied/excluded/judged for being feminine as kids, but it just seems like they're trying too hard.

I think there's like a double edged sword going on here.

Well, maybe it's more like a triple or quadruple edged sword.

Because like, I DO think that things that are seen as 'girly' are made fun of, especially for younger kids. And then even as adults, feminine things are seen as less important.

BUT the other side of that is that by being feminine, you're fitting into the social norms that makes it easier to navigate society.

Gah, I'm being really confusing right now. I guess my point is that by being feminine, you're at an advantage in some respects because you're fitting into the exterior mold that the patriarchy has created, but by doing so, you're also being seen as weaker.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaah, that's why I tend to cringe away from most "Femininity is POWER! GIRL POWER YEAH! I step on men with my high heels!!" It all feels very try hard and almost cartoony. I just can't take it seriously. And it certainly doesn't empower me.
Especially since I'm not really feminine. I wear dresses sometimes, but I don't really wear makeup or high heels or what. Don't have a problem with it, but it's not my thing. I don't think a lot of Tumblr feminists realize that not all people are empowered by the same things.

I had never heard the term "weaponized femininity" until very recently (I assumed it wasn't actually new, but I can't say) but the idea I got of what it should be about if it's done effectively, is taking feminine qualities, which were originally imposed on woman as boundaries or ways to please men, and making them all about you and your strength.

What the feminists who criticize it have a problem with looks like one of two things: either it's not done effectively so the femininity ends up not actually being empowering (I agree with this), or it's not possible for femininity to be empowering at all (I disagree with this).

Hm. I think it's a breath of fresh air considering how weaponized masculinity is. Going by the average ad for male grooming products (SWORD! PROTECTOR! MACH 3!!!) you'd think a man shaving his face is an act of war.

If women have fun doing the same, what's the problem?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
If it has a misandrist overtone to it then, if not really a problem (some of it is just joking and people need to grow up and deal with it) it still sounds ridiculous. Red lipstick does not threaten my masculinity. If anything, it excites it. (no, not like that!)

(maybe a little like that.)

Are you unironically quoting tadelesmith there because that's not cool. It was a parody.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of tadelesmith. I've seen a lot of people say that and similar things unironically.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Above is ayrt, whoops.

"eyeliner so sharp it could kill a man" is a perfect quote.

It's pretty funny you should watch it.

DA

I've heard the thing about eyeliner being sharp enough to kill a man unironically all over tumblr.

That's nice

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
yes yes that's what they're doing

and this comm like to talk about how tumblr jumps on things without knowing the source

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Anon from above, and I really have seen people say that in utter seriousness. My guess is that those people took the video seriously or they heard the quote from somewhere and liked it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
This attitude is waaaayy older than tumbler.
