"Anti-makeup?" Where do you see people trying to shame people for wearing makeup? I mean, I've seen things like "women shouldn't be EXPECTED to wear makeup" but never actually shaming someone for wearing it, unless they're wearing really crappy makeup or way too much of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh there's definitely a movement defining itself as "feminist" that absolutely insists that makeup is a terrible thing that woman should be ashamed of liking.

There's a pretty awesome conversation about this in Libba Bray's Beauty Queens.

I can't say for sure that I've seen it myself, but Tumblr feminists going 'Make-up is a social construct made up by the patriarchy!' doesn't sound like anything unusual.

Tumblr feminists going 'Makeup makes me POWERFUL! Men are ttly terrified of my mad vamp winged eyeliner' is also nothing unusual.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Tumblr feminists are much more likely to talk about "lipstick as red as the blood of your enemies" and "eyeliner so sharp you could kill a man" and this really artificial ~weaponized femininity~ stuff. Because people in the real world really think red lipstick = ultimate lady power.

The only anti-makeup stuff I've been seeing recently is from men who point to women with natural/invisible makeup as the "ideal" without realizing that those women are, in fact, wearing makeup too. And that's not even particularly new.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
pretty much

but wearing makeup that's noticeable means your "fake" and "insecure"

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
that idea is so far from being new that it's been around since the creation of makeup tbh

yep

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've only ever seen it from guys, usually younger guys who seem to think that loudly shaming makeup wearers is a spell for making girlfriends appear.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean it's not?!? Shit, back to the pickup artist blogs.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I dislike the stuff, but feminism has absolutely nothing to do with it. I just think it's a colossal waste of time, natural resources, energy and money that adds to pollution and plasters untested and unregulated chemicals all over a person's face for no good reason. Outside of stage makeup and for hiding certain types of disfigurements, it serves no useful purpose whatsoever.

Even so, I could understand maybe keeping a handful of items around for special occasions when you really want to look nice, but this business of collecting it as a hobby and filling whole drawers with the shit is absolutely disgusting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh shit! Someone enjoys something I don't and is willing to spend money on it! LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT HOW TERRIBLE YOU ARE.

Why are you sitting in front of the computer wasting energy and natural resources?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for your input, I'm sure the OP certainly appreciates the exact kind of person that makes them feel bad appearing to shame makeup even more

Oh, yes, titanium dioxide and iron oxides are extremely untested and unregulated. Let me just stand over here while my face explodes.

(though ironically enough my reasons for preferring mineral foundation have nothing to do with being scared of ~*chemicals*~, it's actually mostly just because they tend to offer a far bigger range of colours. Pale olive-toned skin, what's that?...)

I don't wear makeup either, but calling someone else's hobby that isn't yours "disgusting"?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose you feel superior because you like to step on other women for something that makes them happy huh? Have fun being a pretentious jerk with your head up your ass.

I wouldn't call it a movement, but occasionally I see angry MRA types throwing fits over how makeup (and heels, and pushup bras) are literally deception and should be frowned on because "they allow unattractive women to lie to men about how they look and get dates or sex under false pretenses." Apparently these men have lived in a monastery all their lives and are unaware that EVERYONE knows about these things and NO ONE believes that women have all been born with eyeliner and stilettos and hiked-up cleavage.

Excuse YOU! I was too born with high heels on! :|

Not make up though, I am far too lazy for that. XD

The best part is that those same guys will then complain about how women "don't make an effort anymore" and how we should try harder to look good like women ~~used to~~ and blah blah blah.

One of my former friends told me I was wearing too much make-up and pointed to my sister, whom I see put on makeup while I'm still attempting to drag my ass out of bed, as an example of "natural beauty." I mean, bro, do you even makeup?

(This wasn't the reason we stopped being friends, but it was a manifestation of it.)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Back on LiveJournal, in certain quarters, liking makeup would get you called a ~choice feminist, and the social justice types would lecture you: nobody said you're not allowed to wear makeup or heels, but don't think your choices are made in a vacuum. Which totally meant "your choices are wrong and bad and I judge you for them."
