"Anti-makeup?" Where do you see people trying to shame people for wearing makeup? I mean, I've seen things like "women shouldn't be EXPECTED to wear makeup" but never actually shaming someone for wearing it, unless they're wearing really crappy makeup or way too much of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh there's definitely a movement defining itself as "feminist" that absolutely insists that makeup is a terrible thing that woman should be ashamed of liking.

There's a pretty awesome conversation about this in Libba Bray's Beauty Queens.

I can't say for sure that I've seen it myself, but Tumblr feminists going 'Make-up is a social construct made up by the patriarchy!' doesn't sound like anything unusual.

The only anti-makeup stuff I've been seeing recently is from men who point to women with natural/invisible makeup as the "ideal" without realizing that those women are, in fact, wearing makeup too. And that's not even particularly new.

I've only ever seen it from guys, usually younger guys who seem to think that loudly shaming makeup wearers is a spell for making girlfriends appear.

Makeup secret? YAY! Let's talk about makeup!

When I'm bored, I like to play around with my makeup for practice and for fun.

And last night I did my eyeliner perfectly how I like it, so I took a picture to immortalize that moment.

And now I weep because I will never achieve that level of eyeliner perfection ever again.

I've only ever worn make-up once (for my debs, because my aunt has Ideas about what a girl should look like for that), and can't really stand to wear the stuff personally. It feels wrong, for lack of a better reason. But my granddad and my dad were both make-up artists for the local theatre, and the craftmanship of it has always fascinated me. Stage make-up is different from everyday make-up, of course, but I think the layering of materials to create an image is the same, and it always fascinated me to watch them work as a kid.

There is a craft to it, I think, and a fascinating one to watch in action.

There's definitely an artistry to makeup and it's really cool watching those tutorial videos because just like anything else, makeup takes practice and it takes a while to figure out what you like on yourself. I mean, I'm impressed by anyone who can handle liquid liner because I suck at it.
I personally only wear makeup on special occasions or on the odd day that I really feel like it but other than that, eh. I sometimes wonder whether it's good for you in the long run to apply a lot of cosmetics daily.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm 33 and have always kind of wanted to know how to wear makeup but been to shy to ask someone to teach me. (Even my 7 year old can do a better job, she likes to watch her Grandma (my MIL). I didn't even realize she was taking it in until MY Grandma left her makeup out on the counter one day when my daughter was 4 and she put it on perfectly. Most kids would have smeared it on the wall or something, but not mine. Maybe I should ask her....)

I'm not really into make-up overall, but what I do love is nail polish. I follow blogs and videos of nail art for similar reasons, so I can definitely understand why that would appeal to you.

Me too, OP, me too. I'm an utter trainwreck with a makeup brush, but I love the stuff. Video tutorials scratch that itch without costing the better part of a paycheck.

I'm not great at applying anything more than simple make-up myself but I kind of love watching make-up tutorials, I find them soothing? Also I hope that I can somehow learn the awesome make-up techniques by like video-osmosis or something(this has yet to happen).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I like watching makeup vids too even though I don't wear it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you, OP. This is why I hate the belief that wearing makeup only buys into the patriarchy and is only done for men (barf). I love it because it's downright artistic and fun to see how to transform a face just by adding eyeliner.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't wear make-up either. I don't really know how much of a movement there is. I'm just tired of people who think they're being complimentary telling people who do making tuts or before and afters that they're prettier without the makeup. That's not the fucking point. It's art.

On a related note, I wish it were more acceptable for guys to wear makeup. A little dark eyeliner on a guy can be really hot.

First thought: I get you, man. The application of make-up can totally be an art, and it's fun to watch people who know what they're about.

Second thought: you might be exaggerating the extent to which there's an "anti-make-up" movement.

I love my make up. I am so unfeminine in most ways - I wear jeans and tees and sneakers and I have a quiff - that make up is one of the most basic ways I can express my girlyness. I hate the price tags but I love choosing my eyeshadow to match my tee.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, OP. I can't even wear makeup (allergic), but I love watching makeup tutorials! They're so ingenius.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-31 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
I've yet to see this anti-makeup movement. Maybe people are confusing the opinion "wear less makeup" with "stop wearing any and all makeup". More so if people, particularly guys can't tell the difference between "natural" and "barely there" makeup.

I know the feeling, OP. I never cook, I can't cook, but I watch countless hours of cooking shows, read cooking blogs, etc. Cooking is like magic to me, I love watching it (and wish I was better at doing it).

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 06:11 am (UTC)(link)
Totally get you OP. I am exactly the same way with makeup vids, and equally so with tutorials about hijabs, despite not being Muslim myself. I just think they're so pretty.
