Good. He's really lovable despite his poker face. I'm sure you are, too, OP.

This is why I love Kyoani shows so much. Because even if the main characters are always mentally impaired, they still have friends and can lead normal lives. I truly appreciate their work.

Keeping his thoughts largely to himself = mentally impaired?

Did Rin magically heal him with his shota powers? Because after meeting Rin he became a lot more outgoing and open with his friends to a point that most people would probably call him a "normal kid".

p sure that's not how mental impairment works.

Slightly related

I did a lecture on him and Free! last semester for a Politics of Media class, specifically talking about autism tropes in media. There was one asshole in the front who demanded to know why everyone gets headcanoned as autistic. I almost called campus police.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-01 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That person's behavior was rude but I do think sometimes that it's silly how often people equate emotional reserve in characters to autism. Sometimes people aren't particularly expressive.

I agree that headacanoning everyone who MAYBE COULD BE as autistic as autistic is overdoing it. This is coming from an autistic person.

I'd like to see some more non-stereotypical representation but I'm still very careful about headcanoning characters as that. So far I only have a few serious ones. A big one being Lilo from Lilo and Stitch because she just fits all the symptoms PERFECTLY. But other than that Idk....representation is good and important and all...and headcanoning people as being part of group is well and good if they fit. But projecting it on to EVERYONE is overdoing it and sorta cheapens it in a way.

If that all makes sense...

No, I totally agree with this.

Especially seeing as people oversimplify and use outdated stereotypes as their reasoning.

It was a discussion on autism tropes in media, and I made sure to not assign diagnoses to any characters. I think that idiot was either trying to get attention or trying to get himself expelled. Because the way he was acting was really rude and the class ended up going over because we spent so much time getting him to shut up.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Autism has became a buzword. When people say "X character is autistic", they are just saying "they're socially retarded".

Actually autism is a collection of symptoms that include but are not limited to social difficulties and there's also a spectrum of autism that ranges from minor to 'can't communicate' in some cases. Autism is the name of a disorder, not a buzzword or euphemism. It's respectful to refer to a disorder by its proper name.

Re: Slightly related

Fair enough generally, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to think Haru might have autism. It's not just being socially reserved, it's the obsession with water, not being able to communicate with or understand others very well, taking everything said at face value and missing social cues, not understanding socially appropriate behaviour etc.

He certainly reminds me a lot of my autistic brother.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
...why would you almost call campus police for that? that's not even remotely illegal
elephantinegrace: (Default)

You do realize that it's CAMPUS police, right?

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-04-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
They're specifically there to make sure that the school functions normally. And this guy was being extremely disruptive, to the point where I couldn't actually finish a sentence and ended up demanding that he leave.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, someone has an opinion and calling the police is warranted? Just when I thought SJW's couldn't get any worse.

Troll harder.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
That's great that you find him a positive role model--but so long as we're clear that he is not canonically autistic (he's just reserved).

If you have a headcanon that he's autistic (general you), that's fine--that's what a headcanon is for. But people who write long-ass meta about how he IS autistic...I just cannot.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
What makes you think he's not, out of curiosity?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not that anon, but I don't think kyoani really put that much thought into the characters. Most of them fall under typical anime tropes and they were probably trying to make Haru a 'kuudere'.

If he was a real person I'd say he was autistic and I personally headcanon him to be autistic, but I'm going to say that was the intention with his characterization.

Especially since kyoani characters are usually anime tropes and 'moe' rather than attempting realistic portrayals of people.
