But when it's obviously unnecessary...it gets creepy and uncomfortable.

1): In a fight against zombies. Gore is expected because it's the point.
2): Bandaging wounds after two armies clash. Gore is expected because battle injuries can be gory.
This would imply that fanservicey images would make sense in scenes where the point is to create a sexual feeling. They could also be naturalistic--I've seen a ballet anime where what's under the tutu is sometimes visible according to how the characters move, and it doesn't do fetishistic camera angles or anything, it's just a thing that happens. But with a lot of fanservicey shows, fanservice just seems to be there to be there, and it can be a distraction from the mood of the scene.

I don' know, man. I think the fanservice really enhanced the zombie shit in High School of the Dead, lol.

I feel like that kind of fanservice has the cameraman/animator suddenly jumping in and going LOOK BOOBS or LOOK ASS TEE HEE and it throws me out of the story so bad.
I don't mind it when there is a logical plot reason for it - like in Free, it's an anime about swimming so people are in swimsuits, so I'm more forgiving. Or if it's a show about, say, models so showing them in lingerie makes sense because that's part of what models do.
I guess I just don't like blatant objectification, what can I say.
ETA: the thing about fanservice is that it's not volitional by the characters; it's a decision made by the creators. It's essentially breaking the 4th wall for me in order to point out sexual attributes, and since I as a viewer am forced to objectify the characters along with the creator, it makes me uncomfortable because it's not something I would do otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 05:34 am (UTC)(link)esex doesn't sell. it's been proven that adding sex to an ad actualy dosn' incerease the likelihoodtha people will buy he product. in some cases, it atually reduces the likeihood. but,it is an enjoyable component in a piece of entertinament, and I don't think this is necessarily wrong. it's only wrong really if it is used in the place o f actually repreation and the creation of wll wrounded characters of various backgrounds and geners.
but if we have all of that covered and you're just throwing in some sexy imes for the fuck of it, then who gives tow shits i mean really. i like being titillated. toehr women can say that they dn't i guess, and some don't, but a lot do and they just don't want to say it.
isn't that a sham,e though? it's kind of a fucked up artifact from the bullshit days when women were supposed to be frigid and from the fuckos who are all about purity culutre today. this idea thw ome naren't supposed to be interested in or enjoy sex. BUT WE DO. and it's so hard to admit it because ewe've een told from a very early age that we don't, and that there's osmethin wrong with us if we do. it's a wole lot of bllshit, and we should fight agains it and advocate for the appreciate of female seuality and rthe recogniztion that women nejoy sex and want to have it, with certain people, int he proper context.
I think tha some of this is given int ot the idea thw aomwne cannot and should not be sexual.
