Didn't seem particularly special to me either. It was almost... boring.

But if that's the worst I have to say about something, then other people liking it is perfectly understandable. It's not like certain things that make me go "Is your skull hard yet? This is actual fucking garbage."

Yeah, me either. My kids love it though.

I find the first season charming (though not the others for some reason). MLP was a huge part of my childhood though, so it's probably a nostalgia thing.

I don't think the show's popularity is based on its actual quality. I think it's popular because it's sweet, inoffensive, and it doesn't make you want to throw yourself off a cliff. A lot of modern media seems to inspire feelings of depression.

I watch it with my kid. While it's not the most painful show of hers that I've ever watched (Man, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, I'm so glad she's too old for you) I can't imagine picking it to watch on my own.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-04-11 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not as deep as the hardcore fans make it out to be imho -not in the slightest-, but as far as kid's children's shows go -especially ones geared towards girls-, it's probably one of the better ones.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-11 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
it is a show for very small children, adults have just projected their bullshit unto it.

Uh...but it is? That doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it, but they aren't the target demographic.

(The episode I saw was pretty cute and I can see why people like it. There's so much violence and so many serious themes in most tv today that I don't blame people for wanting something cute and lighthearted.)

I find its popularity among adults totally baffling as well. It's a perfectly fine children's show, but... yeah.

I think the first two episodes of the show are more epic than everything else that came after it, and it was that epicness that sort of drew people in. And then the rest was good and charming enough that it kept people there.

Also the songs - at least of the ones I remember from the first season - were quite catchy. Art of the Dress was my personal "OH GOD I NEED TO FINISH THIS PROJECT" panic song for the longest time. I pulled an all-nighter to that song once.

Yeah, me too. I watched one or two episodes and they were okay. I'm not sure how or why this show inspires the following it does.

I watched the first season and I thought it was fun. Not omg I have to watch it but it's nice and uplifting.

MTE. There are a lot of children's cartoons that have elements I could see appealing to an adult audience. This is not one of them.

It is a children's show.

I liked it because it was a slice of happiness in a time that wasn't so happy for me. I'm not a mega fan and never will be, but it cheered me up. I also like that their is a core female cast and that friendship is very big in the series. There need to be more female driven shows for children.

Why do bronies like it on the other hand? The internet knows and it's a dark dark path.

Clearly it appeals to people?

I don't particularly get it either (ok, at all), but if it's someone else's choice of happy, friendly, harmless entertainment good for them?

(As long as they say don't chase the children out of the fandom)

I like it as a nice little cartoon filled with sparkly ponies but I will agree that it is over-hyped, but things getting over-hyped on the internet is nothing new tbh, nor likely to change.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
As near as I can tell, this is what happened:

My Little Pony came out with a new cartoon and the hordes of 4chan watched the first episode so they could make fun of its inanity but to their shock and surprise it wasn't a sacharine goo-fest but a smart, fun little program. Thus duly enchanted, they placed it in the Awesome Things file instead of the Pathetic Things file and the brony subculture sprouted from there.

The trick is to approach the program with lowered expectations instead of believing the hype.

I can't seem to find it now, but I saw a post once that tried to explain why Touhou got to be such a big thing despite being kind of crap. Paraphrasing, imagine a world where the Batman comics never existed. LEGO's video game division decides to do more games based on new IP, so it creates a superhero game called LEGO Batman, basically the same as the one in our world. Folks play it, not expecting much, and they realize it's an interesting setting, so one of them writes fanfic that's like the Adam West show, and one of them writes fanfic that's like The Killing Joke, and one even writes fanfic that's like the Joel Schumacher movie. The quality of the original has ceased to matter, because the fanon has taken on a life of its own.

Of course, potential alone doesn't make a fandom. I'm not sure what drew so many people to Touhou, but as the posters above have said, what drew folks to MLP is innocence. When marketers think grow ups only want stuff that's "dark" and "mature," such that even Star Trek and Superman are forced to "grow up," a show for 2-11 year olds can look quite mature in comparison. (In other words, the driving factor in the above analogy isn't The Killing Joke, it's Adam West!)

(In a parallel universe where fantasy media is, on the whole, sickeningly saccharine, folks are wondering how the hell Dark Souls got such a massive online fandom.)

Because it's the only children's show I can think of off the top of my head in which there are a variety of female mains who are allowed to mess up, hold different personalities and still all be considered good people. None of the "Being this type of girl is okay, but this type isn't."
