Fandom Breakups...

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-04-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Tell me about the fandoms you have left and why. Perhaps your most recent one? Or maybe the fandom you left that you wish you could rejoin but that spark is gone. Or the fandom you left and are the most bitter about.

Most recently I left the WTNV fandom. I wasn't really into the overarching plot they were starting. Tthe fandom's behavior also turned me off of the show.

And I still look fondly back on my Supernatural fandom experience. Sadly, the show became to repetitive and I lost interest in it. My interest in fandom soon followed and I finally moved my Supernatural fic bookmarks to my "Dead fandom folder".

So what are some of your fandom breakups?

Prince of Tennis: 1st time? Drama in the top crowd. 2nd time? I just lost interest,

Every other one: Lost interest and never looked back

Teen Wolf. I enjoyed it back in season one and two, but the fandom got more and more crazy, and then the show followed suit. Now, I can't bear to be around either part of it.

Not quite the same, but I was broken up with by the Mark Oshiro sites/fansite. Sometimes I'm absolutely fine with that, because they can be a toxic bunch of asshole crybabies, but other times I really miss their enthusiasm.

The Havemercy/Volstovic Cycle fandom. It had died on livejournal and when I came to tumblr, I saw that there was actually a tiny little bit of activity in the related tag and I thought "Hey, maybe there's still hope". But then I untracked the tag after a while - the new tumblr crowd didn't really agree with me and they only talked about the books in the series that I didn't like at all, so I thought it better to bury it and remember the old days fondly.

Bones just strayed too far from the premise and characters I liked.

House totally lost me with the sixth season. (And the fact that House never changed. He's start to change and then totally regress.)

Supernatural lost me with Ellen/Jo/Anna deaths

A few others I just kinda drifted away from. There was really no defining moment, just me noticing that episodes were building up on my DVR.

Bleach, because A) the more obnoxious parts of the fandom were seriously getting on my nerves, and B) I wasn't enjoying reading the manga anymore. This was toward the end of the Hueco Mundo arc, and I was sick of every single fight getting stretched out for a billion boring, backgroundless chapters.

I also pretty much gave up on DC comics ever since the reboot. I might grab some back issues from the library on occasion, but I won't read anything published post-Flashpoint and I'm sure as fuck not giving DC any more of my money.

I had a pretty intense breakup with Glee midway through the second season, mostly due to the addition of Blaine and the way the show really started to stuff itself up his butt. The fandom got really ugly around then too...ridiculously vitriolic shipwars (mostly Kurt/Blaine versus Kurt/Sam at the time, but it's usually Kurt/Blaine versus Kurt/anyone but Blaine, and not to mention the RPF tinhatters), all kinds of anon hate and death threats and the whole nine yards. I was so put off by the entire experience that I cut off all contact and never looked back.

My fandom interest in Harry Potter evaporated as soon as I finished the last book. It wasn't that I hated it or anything; in fact, at the time, it was in my top three. But for some reason, I just lost all interest. I was in several HP RP forums, had been so for over seven years, but within a month or two, I'd left all of them. I used to read the books about once a year, but I haven't touched a single one since 2007.

And I know the obvious reason is that "it ended. duh", but that hasn't been the case with any of my other fandoms, so... yeah. *shrugs*

WTNV because of the fandom; Glee because of the terrible writing; GoT because it's so incredibly tedious and also because of the fans.

Yeah, I broke off from the Supernatural fandom too. When I was into it, I remember there was a period of a few months where I pretty much read nothing but Wincest fics. It was pretty embarrassing.

I'm also not that into Sherlock anymore either. The first episode of Season 3 was just...bad, in my opinion. It was just the characters spewing out "witty lines" without anything really happening. Because of that, I haven't really bothered to finish the season.

Hetalia. I interpreted too many of the popular pairings as incest, didn't go for most of the themes that showed up frequently in the non-incesty pairings' fic, and couldn't find any non-shipfic.

Supernatural - broke up with the fandom, but have gone back to the show and love it again. Yeah, I know, I don't get it either.

Sherlock - the stupid got to me. Still hang out in small corner of the fandom though, where I'm insulated from all the other bullshit.

Criminal Minds - this show literally just got too stupid for me to continue watching it or engaging with the fandom at all. I have watched a lot of dumb shows in my time, and I can say without a doubt that this one, though it wasn't always, in a space of a few seasons easily became the dumbest. A pox on you, CM, a pox.

I have long breaks from fandoms(years long in some cases) but the only one where I've actually left permanently is Supernatural. I don't really care about the characters anymore, I don't go looking for fic or photo/gif-sets, I just really gave up caring.

Gossip Girl. I got tired of the crap it pulled, got sucked in again for Dan/Blair than peaced out until the last episode and laughed forever.

I still haven't finished s3 of Sherlock. I didn't' care for the first episode and haven't managed to care about the other 2.

I feel like my love for spn has dwindled a lot, but one of my best friends watches it and so does my mother. I like having discussions with them, so I keep watching it for them.

Sherlock, midway through series 2. I was never really in the fandom to begin with so it was just me quitting the show because the writing annoyed me and it simply Sherlock Holmes-y enough to keep me interested.

Supernatural as well. I lost interest during this season and slowly started to hate the all of the spn blogs I was following. Stopped watching, unfollowed most of them, and haven't read any fic for a while.
The most fandom stuff I've done since then is watch KLK and lurk 4chan threads sometimes.

Heroes. The second season got hit hard by the writers' strike, but there was no excuse for the third season, and I just couldn't care anymore. I ditched canon, and I ditched the fandom with it.

Geneforge. The plots kept getting bleaker and bleaker, and the gameplay branches kept asking me to choose between two or more things that all seemed cruel, selfish, or outright evil. I just didn't feel like it was any fun anymore. I actually hung on for a while just because of the fandom, but it didn't have much in the way of fic, so again, I was pretty inactive once I gave up on canon.

I tried playing some of the new games from the Geneforge dev, but I still wasn't comfortable with the things I was supposed to do in them. I didn't bother with the fandom, and I haven't engaged at all with whatever's left of the Heroes fandom.

In the process of breaking up with Bioware. I still play some of the older games, but I think both the writing and gameplay really suck lately, and frankly some of the independents are doing their narratives better.

Bailed on CSI after the Eads/Fishburne "orchids" scene, a moment of bathos that came out a bit like this but deeply unfunny. "Wa happen'? Wa happen'?" Your show jumped the shark, that's wha happen.

Gotta toss my hat in for Supernatural as well, sadly. I was actually kind of okay with the meandering oddity of s6, but s7 and the whole Leviathan plotline just bored me to tears, then between Bobby dying and me realizing that I really didn't like either Sam or Dean anymore pretty much sealed it for me.

Oddly enough, the fandom itself wasn't really part of it. I've been in fandoms that got waaaaay more toxic than SPN's ever got. Unless that's changed in the past couple of years; I suppose I haven't really kept up so I can't really say.

I left the Supernatural fandom. I liked the first three seasons really well, I thought the fourth was okay, the fifth was too much for me, then I thought the sixth season was TERRIBLE, the seventh started out...okay...but became terrible again, I tried again for the first part of the eighth season and I finally had to call it quits. The show just seemed to be retreading the same paths and when it went somewhere new, I didn't care for the direction it was going (anything about the angels was bad for me). At first, I was really pissed because I really loved the show at first but I've cooled down about it a lot.

Dumped Torchwood without regret after that Children of Earth shit. (In the span of FIVE EPISODES, they killed off three fifths of the team. Nope.)

Currently on a break with Doctor Who, I might take them back after they ditch that Moffat loser.

Broke up with Legend of Korra after they started out full of potential but then went into a downward spiral of shit.
