I agree.

Besides the general idea of... no ..., Disney still had a hand in it. It may not have the logo big as day, but they're not going to go with that.

Whenever I see posts online about "Wow, Marvel is finally starting to represent someone is not a white 30 year old dude," I just want to ask...where the fuck have you been? Even my sister whose only knowledge of the Marvel comes from the movies and Project Runway seems to know more about how diverse Marvel has gotten.

Mm - as a teenager, I don't think I can entirely understand your feelings, OP. I have issues with a lot of teenage superheroes, but because often they don't feel like teenagers to me, especially when the Batfamily is involved.

I agree with you on Jaime - I loved his series. I am also really enjoying a lot of Miles Morales, though!

This.

We've all been teenagers in our lives, so I fail to understand how people find it impossible to relate to fictional ones.

That's understandable, OP! I like replaying games the same way I like rereading books, but I know several people don't feel the same way. A few people I know actually watch LPs on a regular basis instead of playing games, which I'm not into, especially if the LPer talks over the game. It's certainly a valid option, though! And if you're someone who dislikes replaying games or something similar, it's likely that watching the LP was pretty much like playing for you. There's nothing wrong with not spending the money if you're not interested in playing the game itself.

Nah, Miley Cyrus knows exactly what she is doing. So what if people like you call her stupid names and make fun of her, everyone is talking about her. People are buying her songs and guess what? She doesn't care why you bought it, you are giving her money. She doesn't seem to be into drugs or any other nasty stuff young stars get into. But she has a perfect stage/public persona that puts her on the front of magazines and in the news.

The answer to that question is an easy one, but I suppose you don't want to hear it.

That's okay. It is okay to not like this thing. And in fact getting away from the "This is diverse therefore you gotta like it" thing is probably a good idea. There's nothing wrong with regarding Ms Marvel as a superhero, and the comic as a comic, rather than as an instantiation of some political principles.

Like what you like, however you most enjoy it.

No disrespect to you or any other Christian intended, but hell, do I hate theodicy. Like, seriously, there are a total of two topics that can make me absolutely fume with rage, and they are childhood abuse and theodicy.

And yeah, I understand that to some people, this is a complicated moral dilemma that requires much consideration, but to me, this is an elementary question with a depressing answer. Maybe it's because I'm too bitter to consider the existence of an all-loving omniscient power. I find it way more plausible that there is a consciously evil superbeing than that there is a consciously good one.

When things like this happen in fictional universes, I just kind of want to shout, stop, there can be no justification and trying to find one is a horrible thing to do. Even though I realize that it probably shouldn't be that black-and-white.

I love watching Let's Plays. I have probably watched more Let's Plays of games than actually completely them.

"how dare you watch the movies instead of reading the comics"
"how dare you watch the anime instead of reading the manga"
"you read this classic novel in graphic novel format? philistine"

A story's a story.

Let me reassure you once and for all -- asking yourself how God can exist and questioning why bad things happen does not make you a bad Christian. Not doing those things would make you a dumb Christian. What would be the purpose of faith if it wasn't a really fucking difficult thing to figure out and come to terms with? There'd be no value in it at all if it came easy. A good Christian tries to think deeply and come up with answers and philosophy and deepen their understanding of the world, because only through questioning can there be understanding, and only through understanding can there be good. A bad Christian goes "hurr durr, shut up and don't think about it!"

Most fans like the Death of the Author, though. But I agree that in this case it goes against the narrative as well as against the authorial intent.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not that they're starting to represent more diverse characters, it's that they've started doing more to actively promote those characters. Big difference.
