Whenever I see posts online about "Wow, Marvel is finally starting to represent someone is not a white 30 year old dude," I just want to ask...where the fuck have you been? Even my sister whose only knowledge of the Marvel comes from the movies and Project Runway seems to know more about how diverse Marvel has gotten.

Mm - as a teenager, I don't think I can entirely understand your feelings, OP. I have issues with a lot of teenage superheroes, but because often they don't feel like teenagers to me, especially when the Batfamily is involved.

I agree with you on Jaime - I loved his series. I am also really enjoying a lot of Miles Morales, though!

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
We've all been teenagers in our lives, so I fail to understand how people find it impossible to relate to fictional ones.

That's okay. It is okay to not like this thing. And in fact getting away from the "This is diverse therefore you gotta like it" thing is probably a good idea. There's nothing wrong with regarding Ms Marvel as a superhero, and the comic as a comic, rather than as an instantiation of some political principles.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Honest question, how much of mainstream comics is still centered around superheroes?

I know there'sobviously stuff that isn't, but it seems like what's popular is centered around superheroes and I absolutely no interest in that.

You don't have to like her. Though admittedly I like that she's a teenager and I hope she sticks around. Many teenage characters these days just fall through.

Also you might want to check out Iron Patriot, Mighty Avengers, (Adjective-less) X-Men, Black Widow, Elekra, All New Ghost Rider, Captain Marvel and She Hulk for other Marvel books that attempt to appeal to other crowd besides straight, adult, white males.

I have a hard time relating to teenage characters/YA-related things in general, for personal reasons I rarely every discuss (needless to say, those years were not the best at all and I've mentally blocked them out as best I could). So I feel about the same way with teenage superheroes in general (this incl. Runaways, Young Avengers, et al). =T

And also, Marvel actually has been the more diverse company when it comes to the Big Two, but as someone pointed out above, they're just making more of an effort to promote these characters.

You don't *have* to be excited because of diversity, OP. And I agree with you: I'm not in a hurry to check this out because I'm not interested in teenage heroes. Also the reason I haven't checked out All-New Ghost Rider yet (also a teenager, but a boy and Latino).

[personal profile] applemagpie 2014-04-19 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not like there's anything wrong with not being excited over it.

I personally love teen superheroes though. But I'm often guilty of enjoying media that is intended for a younger audience.

How dare Marvel not be like DC, just focusing on the middle aged market. How dare they grow their business by focussing on multiple demographics. What sort of business is it that does that, what sort of entertainment business tries to entertain teens and adults. A Damn successful one, that is what sort. Wish DC were more like it.

Well, I guess I can understand that, anonymous. If this is hard for you to relate to the character's age, it makes sense that you would not be so excited.

And there's nothing wrong with that! Although I have the feeling that you are more disappointed than thinking there is something wrong?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-19 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Jaime love! Sorry, he's my favourite, even now that I'm out of the comic scene.

I do sometimes find it hard to relate to teenage characters but in this instance I'm certainly willing to give the new Ms Marvel a go because it looks interesting.

Your loss. Kamala is adorably geeky.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I tried to like it but I'm not so far. I do wonder if it is because she's getting so much attention and books I live have come an gone without so much as a nod from media. Or possibly because I've finally hit that stage as a comic reader where I'm wary of new characters because I know their staying power is limited.

I'm with you on Jaime. I started reading the first run shortly before it was cancelled. That's my luck. I agree about it loosing all the charm after 52.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Kamala makes me think of Jaime kind of a lot. I like both of them for a lot of the same reasons. I miss Jaime and his fun series so much.

Idk I'm 23 (I know, not super old) but I've suddenly regained my interest in YA fiction so I can still really get into stories involving teens

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I generally don't do media about kids and teens. It's not that I can't relate, I just don't care much for some of the teen issues (negotiating freedom with parents, first dating, all that) and I prefer reading about characters closer to my age. But I've been wanting to read this comic. The art style is attractive and the character sounds cool.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just here to agree with how awesome pre-reboot Jaime Reyes was.
