I've been refreshing the journal's page for about ten minutes to be first >:D

Well, I think it's kinda stupid to make a secret that proves you don't know what you're talking about.

A) His name is Marcus Johnson. He took his father's name after being hunted by his father's old enemies, burning his former identity, and joining SHIELD. It's kind of playing off the old theory that "James Bond" is a legacy name instead of a single person.

B) He doesn't "just happen" to look like Samuel L. Jackson. Ultimate Fury, who came about before the movies were even a gleam, was designed to look like SLJ because he was the most hardcore guy they could think of. They got special permission, but yeah, he looked like Jackson before Jackson was ever signed on to do the movies. And really, 616 Fury looks less like Samuel L Jackson than Ultimate Fury does most of the time.

But hey, whatever. Is it kinda dorky and stupid? Yeah, a bit. But I can't blame them for trying to make the comics look a little more like their incredibly popular and accessible movies--the idea is to bring in new readers, after all.

Pretty good article about fandom

He makes some spot-on points. Talks a lot about BSG at the beginning, but keep reading even if you're not a fan.

Book Club Poll

Book Selection June 2014

Voting guidelines
So, if I understand correctly, the situation is that each IP can only vote once, but you can vote for multiple books within that one vote.

I understand there may be a work around for some people, dunno what's up with that, maybe if you have something funky with your IP address you can vote more than once? Dunno the techy shite, but there it is and I don't know how to change it. If this applies to you, would you kindly not abuse the your ability to mulit-vote, Keep it fun for everyone, even if that means you don't get to read your preference this time out, not going to be much of a book club if you only read stuff you know you want to read.

Happy Voting

Of course there's Gerard Way selfcest. OF COURSE.

The demo covers the first two chapters of the game.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Me, too, anon. I think that's just how people are sometimes. I try not to worry about it too much.

Aha, aw. I'm sorry. Yeah, it's a crack ship with nothing to it. I'm sorry you got unintentionally trolled hard by the delusional part of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
At least that would be a distinguishing character trait.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I would call them a crack ship (since they are fairly well acquainted with each other and interact multiple times in the show. I generally define a crack ship as one where the characters have either never interacted or have only barely done so) but I do agree. I saw a bunch of Sterek fans talking about how ~canon~ and ~obvious~ the pairing was in the show and the whole time I watched it I was like "lol wut? When does the Sterek start? Is it the next episode...or the next?". And they barely even interacted meaningfully at all during 3B except in the very last scene. Hell, Derek had way more slash potential with Chris Argent in that season (which I do ship now btw. I ship it hard).

Does the fandom generally think it's a good representation, is that why this is a secret? I've never watched/read The Boondocks so that's why I'm asking.

I had Ruby growing up, and with remakes I usually get the opposite, but Alpha Sapphire sounds so strange to me...if my favorite pokemon are still version exclusives (Zangoose - Solrock/Serviper - Lunatone), I'd probably just stick with Ruby.

This is an universe where normal, everyday people give birth to children with multiple arms, scales, wings and fur and you have a hard time buying this?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
New readers that don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of agree? But I also don't think Huey is supposed to be an entirely reliable narrator / perspective character.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, is it eyebrows and hair?

[personal profile] ozaline 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Where then are they to look for new readers?
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, yeah. It's 'cause they don't want to leave. They want a parade.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The audience definitely exists. 10% of the movie audience is absolutely an audience worth going after. That's huge when you think about the proportionate sizes between the movie audience and the comic audience. That's plenty of crossover.

And just as a general rule, it's hard for me to see anything that tries to be accessible instead of continuing cater to the same hardline reactionary comics fan constituency that they've been going hard for over the last couple decades now. Gotta get those new fans.

Was it mainly from tumblr gifs? Man, tumblr gifs just make me wanna ship pairings in shows I've never seen, even though the gifs have probably been hella edited/taken out of context.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
And how much crossover have we gotten? Avengers was one of the most successful films ever made. Did that affect the direct market?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Whatever; I love Jackson!Nick Fury and no one can take that away.

[personal profile] the_missing_y 2014-05-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
And the missing eye?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of the audience probably won't set foot in a comic store. Because, well, we hear stories.

But hey, comixology is a thing now, virtual readers are a growing market with un-virtual dollars. Comics need new readers, and they have to come from somewhere. Less than 10% of the audience starts picking up a related book? Holy CRAP do you even REALIZE how many new readers that is? A movie, especially a giant summer blockbuster has an ENORMOUS audience compared to even a best-selling superhero book. If even a tenth, or hell, a fifth of those people who hadn't been reading comics before decide to go and give a comic a try because of a movie, that is a HUGE boost in sales.
