The funny thing is they do stuff like this to make the comics more 'accommodating' for potential movie fans crossing over when less than 10% of the people who go see the movies will set foot inside a comicbook store. They're aiming for an audience that doesn't exist.

[personal profile] ozaline 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Where then are they to look for new readers?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
The audience definitely exists. 10% of the movie audience is absolutely an audience worth going after. That's huge when you think about the proportionate sizes between the movie audience and the comic audience. That's plenty of crossover.

And just as a general rule, it's hard for me to see anything that tries to be accessible instead of continuing cater to the same hardline reactionary comics fan constituency that they've been going hard for over the last couple decades now. Gotta get those new fans.

A lot of the audience probably won't set foot in a comic store. Because, well, we hear stories.

But hey, comixology is a thing now, virtual readers are a growing market with un-virtual dollars. Comics need new readers, and they have to come from somewhere. Less than 10% of the audience starts picking up a related book? Holy CRAP do you even REALIZE how many new readers that is? A movie, especially a giant summer blockbuster has an ENORMOUS audience compared to even a best-selling superhero book. If even a tenth, or hell, a fifth of those people who hadn't been reading comics before decide to go and give a comic a try because of a movie, that is a HUGE boost in sales.

Eh, I don't know. I started reading Marvel comics because of Wolverine and the X-Men. The movies are as good a place to try to hook new readers as any.

I didn't start reading comics until I got really into the Marvel movies and I just picked up $30 dollars worth at my local store where they know who I am when I come in and just give me the ones they know I'm going to want. It's not unreasonable.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I think it's kinda stupid to make a secret that proves you don't know what you're talking about.

A) His name is Marcus Johnson. He took his father's name after being hunted by his father's old enemies, burning his former identity, and joining SHIELD. It's kind of playing off the old theory that "James Bond" is a legacy name instead of a single person.

B) He doesn't "just happen" to look like Samuel L. Jackson. Ultimate Fury, who came about before the movies were even a gleam, was designed to look like SLJ because he was the most hardcore guy they could think of. They got special permission, but yeah, he looked like Jackson before Jackson was ever signed on to do the movies. And really, 616 Fury looks less like Samuel L Jackson than Ultimate Fury does most of the time.

But hey, whatever. Is it kinda dorky and stupid? Yeah, a bit. But I can't blame them for trying to make the comics look a little more like their incredibly popular and accessible movies--the idea is to bring in new readers, after all.

But... it's not a coincidence. They asked to use his likeness for Ultimates. He said yes on the condition that he got to be Fury in the movies if any were made.

So...

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-05-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Stupid shit happens all the time. Cracked has done multiple articles on various shades of stupid, nonsensical, and downright bizarre stuff they've done. This falls way, way, WAY down on the list of weird shit to happen in the comics. Hell, it's way, way down on the list of stupid shit relating to a Nick Fury character to happen, even just in 616-verse alone.

I wouldn't mind it so much if Fury Jr. didn't completely bore me. Sure he looks like MCU Fury but he's missing all the coolness factor.

The only time I can say I truly liked him was when he recently had a cameo in Deadpool when a time travelling Hitler was trying to kill Nick Fury. Just one sentence from Fury Jr. sent Hitler running back into time.

Actually!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Sam Jackson's Nick Fury is a completely different Nick Fury (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHZGFn8PnSM).

(Anonymous) 2014-05-08 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. I couldn't care less for the son thing. The stupid part is that they retired old 616 Nick Fury, who was really great. But then again, they couldn't make SHIELD the incompetent assholes they are currently if he had stayed, so maybe it's for the best.
