yeah, i know--sorry i should've mentioned that. i know it's him, just not where it's from.

SA. I KNOW! AND HE LOOKS LIKE A WAXED MANNEQUIN! :(

On a more serious note - his high school episode finished his character for me. It was one big cliche.

I'm watching this movie that was billed as being about a woman agreeing to fulfill her fiance's fantasy for a ffm threesome if he agrees to an mmf threesome.

What it's really about is Amy relenting to the fantasy so it's not "hanging over their heads" after they're married, but when Anthony tells his firefighter friends it's going to happen and she finds out, she tells him that they're either doing both or he shouldn't show up for the wedding, and caught in the middle is Victor, a gay boy who's always crushed on Anthony.

And now Anthony, his friends and Victor are all hanging out at a gay bar so Victor and Anthony can get to know each other before the big night. It's clear that neither Anthony or Amy want to hold up their end of the "deal" but "they made the deal so now they have to! Anthony swore on his mother's life!"

I'm not quite ready to call it awful, but it's only saving grace is that I think it's pretty clear there won't be any threesomes and Victor will end up with one of Anthony's firefighter friends that nobody knew was gay (or maybe bi). And that's only good because Victor gets a happy ending and Amy and Anthony stop extorting each other.

It's hard to tell for sure, but it does look like print sales are relatively flat since Iron Man came out in 2008. Marvel actually looks to have taken a dip right around then, but sales have been rising since the beginning of 2012.

I'm having a much harder time finding sales figures for digital comics, so I can't speak for that. Articles seem to indicate that that's where a lot of growth is currently happening, although how much is due to movies/tie-ins vs. general comics awareness and ease-of-purchase isn't clear.

Fandom Secrets Reading Patterns?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
when a new post comes up, how do you read the secrets and the threads?

I skim, looking for my secrets, and jump to the relevant threads if any have been posted. Then I look more closely at all the secrets and finally at the general thread.

I felt that way in the first series but I actually started becoming pretty fond of him near the end of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 when they started showing his soft side and made him less of a perpetual jerkass (I mean, he still has his jerkass moments but who can blame him honestly. that guy's like is fucked up). Of course, season 2 and 3 was when I dramatically lowered my expectations for the show so that might have helped

isn't it? i guess it slipped past me when i read the books, but the first time i saw it in a fic was quite a "whoa" moment.

I am so sold on the Golem and the Jinni. I think I'm going to read it regardless, so thank you, person that suggested that book.

I don't watch this show, but I have definitely watched shows to get into a ship before. I did end up liking the show, but the ship, not so much.

I can understand not shipping Sterek (and definitely expecting them to have more scenes together; as big as the pairing is you'd think they were interacting every episode) however (at least in my opinion), they are far from a crackship. Derek doesn't spend a ton of time with any of the characters on the show other than Scott and Peter, so I don't see why shipping him with Stiles is more far fetched than shipping him with most anyone else. They have a rapport, people like that. They've also grown from simply annoying each other to respecting and trusting one another (even a little fondness, there), so their relationship has made some progress. Plus, Derek does care about Stiles' safety, and even when he didn't even like the kid he still protected him. It might not mean "Derek is in love, omg" (in actuality it says more about what kind of person Derek is, but the point still stands), but it's something people can build off of in fanfiction.

YES. OH MY GOSH WHY WOULDN'T HE HOLD DEREK UP FOR SO LONG IN THE WATER IF HE DIDN'T WANT TO JUMP HIS BONES! IT'S THE ONLY EXPLANATION! ALSO, DID YOU SEE HOW DEREK SHOVED STILES INTO THE WALL SOFTLY SO STILES WOULDN'T REALLY BE HURT?! HE REALLY CARES!

Like, seriously, I've seen them talk about how Stiles looking up at Derek in a certain way while Derek was shoving him up against a wall proved that they were into each other.

Hehe, sounds like me and Legend of Arislan. A fair chunk of the little fic that's out there is Daryoon/Narsus, and ... yeah, they have about the same level of interaction.

My thinking is, once you've seen the canon, there's nothing wrong with preferring non-canon fanworks as long as a) you're enjoying yourself and b) you don't lose sight of the fact that it's fanon.

I missed the "Sell Me Your Selection" thread (baww timezones), but I ended up not voting for the book I nominated, because this one looks 1000% better:

In case anyone is on the fence/trying to decide.

I think they're from the latest Ice Age.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that episode was THE WORST. It was like every horrible cliche they could cram in, a massive continuity snarl (not like TW has enough of those already) and then they ended it with a fridging. Just so we could make more of the horrible shit in Beacon Hills All About Derek. UGH.

Re: Pretty good article about fandom

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
One or two points I can agree on, the rest....

The closing paragraph about 'cheesy porno fanfic' outselling the original property makes me want to scream. Storytelling is fundamental to humanity. People have always retold and reshaped stories, yes. Does that erase a need for new, original content? FUCK NO.

The fact that our entertainment industries endlessly recycle popular material has nothing, NOTHING to do with fanfic, and fans, and the internet. It has everything to do with them not wanting to take a risk on untested, new material because they boil everything down to profit margins.

Oh and "mostly female original Star Trek fans who nursed an unseemly obsession with getting Kirk and Spock to get it on"?

He can fuck right off.

I agree with this -- I think it's a very understandable anxiety, but I can't think of many better reasons to explore and enjoy something than to share it with your friend. As long as they don't insult your taste or influence you to dislike or stay away from things you enjoy, I think it's fine!

Look over the secrets quickly. Read any that are about fandoms I care about, or that catch my eye for whatever reason. Respond if I have any immediate responses. Then just wait for the threads to develop and see if there's any interesting conversations.

As far as I knew, it's been a bit up and down but largely, yeah, there seems to have been an overall upstick in comic sales. It goes unnoticed because most of the sales have been in digital comics, whereas comic sales are usually only discussed in relation to pull lists and hard-copy sales.

Was it radial buttons or tick boxes? Try refreshing it. It should be tick boxes but the first run was radial buttons, and I thought I'd saved the change, but maybe not. Have re-saved, sorry about that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-07 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same.
I didn't start watching because of Sterek, but I had seen lots of posts about it before and also from people who said that they don't understand how it became the main ship.
I do get shipping them, I just don't get how they've become this... juggernaut with lots of fans insisting they're almost canon.

Like Destiel has a lot of delusional fans who think it will become canon one day too, but last time I checked (and it has been a while since I watched an episode of SPN so correct me if I'm wrong) Dean andCas actually interact regularly and are clearly important to each other. I get why lots of people hardcore ship them.
With Sterek I don't really get the hardcore devotion.
