The precious book/comic stories were most likely pretty fucking dumb, though

Hell of a lot smarter than Ep I-III. Not that that bar's particularly high, but still.

I keep forgetting the new Star Wars movie is even a thing. I don't care either way but I'm very much a casual fan of SW and haven't read any of the extended universe stuff. However, I did have a similar thing happen to me in another fandom so I know the feeling! It sucks.

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-05-17 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, I never got into the books or comics and didn't realize this movie was going to affect those. I imagine that's making a lot of Star Wars fans unhappy. :( Too bad.

But you can always just not see the film's and pretend they don't exist? Probably a lot of people will be pretending they don't exist, lol.

I'm hoping the film will be at least better than I-III so I CAN wipe out the EU canon in my mind. I loved the comics and books in the beginning but it just got to be so dang much I simply gave up. A fresh start, a split canon, whatever, I just need something to get me back into SW that doesn't involve having to wade through the current EU.

Doesn't mean I'll start hating the books I enjoyed, but I'd love to be able to read them just as something fun from the SW universe. Instead of a huge canon where I feel I have to read every single book and comic that comes out just to know wtf's happening now, only to have that info discredited if something 'more' canon comes out later.

Nope. I'm a huge fan of the EU (at least pre-New Jedi Order). Several EU characters make my top ten favorites. Luke/Mara is my favorite Star Wars relationship, even more so than any of the canon ships including Han/Leia. The Thrawn Trilogy remains my favorite books ever.

And yet I'm still excited about this movie. And totally okay with "de-canonization." I don't think the books or comics were ever true canon anyways. True canon has always been the movies and official tv shows. The books and comics were sort of canon, but I'm okay with the "legends" thing. They'll still be there. Parts of them will still be my headcanon.

But there will be new canon to explore and new Star Wars content. Luke and Leia and Han will be back and we'll meet new characters. And it will be awesome, I hope. Star Wars has not let me down yet (and yes, I'm someone who loves both the OT and the prequels).

What I'm sad about is not the de-canonisation but that the old timeline/stories are being discontinued. I wouldn't have cared about the new films contraticting the EU in any way, but that there won't be anymore stories with these characters (speaking mostly Prequels-EU here, never got that much into anything post Return of the Jedi. Say, Revan, Quinlan and his whole gang, Comics!Canon!Ventress) is actually making me reluctant to consider the new movies a good thing.

I am really baffled with this obsession with the "de-canonizing" thing. GUYS, IT'S FANDOM. Since when have we given a shit about what was and wasn't canon anyway? What actual DIFFERENCE is it going to make? The books are still there! Nobody's invading your house and burning them! You can still use the storylines in YOUR experience of the Star Wars verse!

I mean there are so many reasons I'm dubious about the new films I can't count them, but this massive flail about "de-canonizing" stuff is just so very strange to me.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-05-17 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Frankly, I for one am glad that the post-'Jedi' EU is being disregarded by the new movies.

Not that any of it was canon to begin with. Hell, everything *but* 'The Clone Wars' and now 'Rebels' was basically professionally published fan fiction in a shared universe. (And yes, I'm including my beloved KOTOR/TOR, and even 'Shadows of the Empire') I'm glad that JJ Abrams and the crew of 'Rebels' aren't beholden to events and characters that the general populace doesn't even know/care about. (Hell, if the show completely ignores Starkiller forming the Rebel Alliance, I will kiss Filoni, Kinberg, and Weisman's feet)

That said, despite my personal feelings, I honestly do feel sorry for the people who were fans of these characters/stories. The plus side? Most of them will still be reprinted -under the 'Legends' banner- so long as the demand is still there for them. And I'm pretty sure Marvel will occasionally reprint some of the comics, again, *if* the demand for them is there. Also, you still have fan fic, fan art, cosplay, et all. The characters/stories will not be forgotten/die so long as people still remember them.

But yeah... that's one of the downsides of being invested in a shared universe, OP. And sometimes, you gotta clean out the sandbox when it starts looking more like an overused kitty litter box. Which, lbr, is what the SWEU was starting to look like at this point, if not long before.

I hope it fails spectacularly too. Anything that can give JJ Abrams career a Joel Schumacher trajectory is a good thing in my eyes. I just hate his films, the inevitable shift away from his "style" cannot come soon enough.

I sort of understand why you would feel that way, but I'm also a little mystified why the decanonization is such a big deal.

The EU stuff was of wildly variant quality. Some of it was great, some was atrocious, but the biggest problem is that it covered so much ground, explored the universe from so many different angles, that taken in toto there's no way any continuation of the film series could've hoped to be compatible with all of it. Making a movie that wasn't a straight-up adaptation of any of the EU series would've been impossible.

I don't see this as functionally any different from the schism between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the comics from which they came. They're different, related canons, and when you're (say) writing fanfic, you can kind of pick and choose the parts you like from each.

I refuse to think anything before the prequels and before The Clones Wars is non-canon.

Some of my favorite books are set there and there's even some set during the Clone Wars that I adore.

Shatterpoint? It's canon as far as I'm concerned. The Approaching Storm? Canon and it was the book that made me adore Luminara.

The Clone Wars novels, especially Wild Space? Canon. Hell, those were written specifically to be tie-ins to the show.

KOTOR/SWTOR? Canon as far as I'm concerned. Unless they for whatever reason bring Revan into the new stuff, that shit has no baring on the movies and thus should not be non-canon.

Fuck these people, seriously.

Though I am still miffed that the Shaak Ti novel never got off the ground.

Honestly, I'm thrilled they tossed the EU out the window. It had gotten so complex and unwieldy and so much of it was just plain bad that I'm glad they decided to opt for a fresh start.

As someone who didn't think of the EU as canon to begin with and had to endure countless people arguing with me about it being canon and being "awesome" and being called a jealous hater and all sorts of names because I didn't like plenty of characters...

the response of EU fans to the announcement that the EU isn't canon brings me a warm feeling

I know this is probably a bad thing, so this is all I'm going to say and I'm not checking to see if anyone replies to this.
