Ah, the "I demand Empowered Female Characters in my narrative so I can feel virtuous about liking it, but I don't actually give a shit about them, now where are my hot tortured menz" style of fangirl.

AKA literally everybody in Hannibal fandom, just for starters.

This isn't all that different from male canon writers who spend most of their plot on writing about male characters, but who save all their mooning and dreaming and sublimity for beautiful women who inspire their soul.

I wonder why the same thing doesn't happen with male *audiences* though.

To me, it can be pretty much any character in a film or show that I either find relatable or admirable.

I can't imagine not caring how a character fares in canon!

I love Bucky and Daryl, and sometimes I don't want to murder Loki and Ragnar, but your list of female characters is probably better. (Overall, anyway. Don't know a couple of them, but still.)

Uh...you like what you like, I guess? I read mostly shippy fic, so whatever pairing I ship is who I read the most fanfic about.

Isn't this pretty typical, OP? Not that all or even most fans fit this mold, but it's very common.

ETA: I approve heartily of your love for both Vriska and Karkat. They're my first and second favorite trolls, respectively. (Though I don't think I do the Tortured Abs thing with him. But he's attractive, I agree with that.)

Isn't just the standard definition of "character I think is cool" and "character I am sexually attracted to"? It's okay to think female characters are awesome without being sexually attracted to them, and it's okay to not write porn about characters you're not sexually attracted to.

This is just logic and common sense. Nobody asks the dudes in fandom why they keep drawing porn of the hot girls they like and berates them for not drawing more male characters or spending more time writing shippy fic featuring Marcus Fenix.

I get #1 (though I'm not quite so dramatic about it) but the ubiquity of #2 is starting to annoy me. Maybe because as I've grown older the fans my age are more and more likely to be into it, or maybe I just never noticed before?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the same except I like the "fragile boy" character more than tortured abs (..Bucky qualifies as both; I prefer Athelstan to Ragnar)

I'm similar, I usually have this female character I have great fondness for and a male character I lust after in my mind.

Yeah I've noticed similar trends, both in fandom as a whole and in my own interests. ("DON'T YOU TOUCH A HAIR ON MARTHA JONES' HEAD yes hello i would like eight dozen scenes of david tennant looking sad and getting punched in the face.") I wonder how much of it is the want-to-be/want-to-bang divide, how much is cultural training to have a deeper and more varied investment in male characters' experiences, and how much is well-justified wariness of how violence and suffering tend to be depicted differently for men and women. Victimization vs trial by fire: we don't like to see bad things happen to our favorite female characters because it usually means they're about to be ridiculed for getting hurt, put down for the count after one good punch, or otherwise demeaned and written off. But dudes get to claw their way back to their feet with haggard determination in their eyes and an attractive trickle of blood coming from one corner of their mouth.

I mean, that's not a universal gender divide, and when I do end up in a fandom with female characters who are in the latter role they're the ones I tend to "HNNNNGH" over the hardest. (Black Widow is near the top of my "baby I'm so sorry but YOUR SUFFERING IS MY LIFEBLOOD" list at the moment.) But it's still, unfortunately, pretty fucking gendered. And I think there's a closely-related phenomenon where criticism of female characters is still such a sore subject that you almost never see "oh my god you are the ACTUAL WORST look at your life look at your choices" used as a supreme sign of affection like you do with male characters.

I get ya. Something I want to see more of in canon, and the reason why I consume it in the first place, isn't always what I want out of fanworks. I definitely have a bent towards dudes when it comes to favourites and what I want to see in fic/art, but I will meta out of my ass about my favourite women even if I'm never going to write or look at another fans interpretation. Also, some characters just cry real pretty and awesome in my head. Especially if they have abs (looking at you, Korra) and I already know what they look like as sad sacks and I also feel schadenfreude when they're sad (Derek Hale you useless adult).

Depends on fandom ofc and the number of characters overall. HS, for instance, I'll read just about anything because the cast is so huge and somewhat diverse enough that there's no way I'm not going to have favourites that don't get developed enough anyway, hence why I'll go to fandom for it.

Karkat's strawberry tears are the only reason I have not completely given up that comic.

This made me realize that most of the fic I've written has been about a female character or pairing with a female character that has caught my love and fascination in canon. Whenever my favorite characters and couples are all male, I only read fanfiction, not contribute to it. Weird. I guess I find writing tortured abs more difficult than I thought.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sure a lot of people do that, OP, although maybe with a different definition for their tortured abs character. It's a characters you love existing as they are vs characters you want to see a fandom perspective on comparison, I guess. Same reason some people love canon pairings but don't want to explore them in fic. It's normal.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-25 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
The real question is do you then ship Carol/Daryl, Peggy/Bucky, or Draco/McG? Because that would kind of be awesome.

Heh, half my Tumblr friendslist (dash, I guess?) is exactly like this, so it definitely is a Thing, although I'm not sure the reason behind it (and so far I've never really gotten into the whole "make my favorite suffer" thing that I see on Tumblr a lot, so I don't have any insight). I'm guessing it's just a fairly normal expression of attraction/sexuality (as people said above).

Okay I am really loving the phrase "tortured abs." I will have to steal that phrase for future use.

Sounds like A is a character you admire but don't find sexually attractive, and B is a character you admire in abstract and maybe more importantly find sexually attractive.
