I love these apology sheets; they're the best.

That said, I kind of understand how you feel. I always think, "If I talk about this character or pairing too much then I'm going to put people off it", but at the same time...people can skip my comments if it annoys them that much.

(I feel the same way about tumblr, tbh. When I first joined tumblr I tried to not reblog too much of any one fandom for fear it might anger people, then I realized it was my blog and if they didn't like it they would probably just unfollow me.)

I guess there's a difference between "obsessively stanning" and just reblogging shittons of stuff. I mean, people *can* get sick of things just from sheer volume, but that's their fault, and it's far more likely for people to get sick of things that all have some kind of grating attitude -- obsessive, smug, exclusionary, overwrought, dismissive of other things, etc. Particularly when it comes to fans who have certain metas and headcanons that they keep slapping onto everything as if it was canon.

Ah, okay, that's not how I read the secret at all, but that might've very well been what the OP meant. That's a bit different then, I think. If someone believes their headcanons are canon and keep announcing that I can see why it would grate on people's nerves. (Smugness, dismissiveness, etc too.)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The problem lies when one person's headcanon is another person's reality.

For instance, I've seen people saying how nobody should be saying that The Winter Soldier killed Howard Stark, and the entire thing is just coincidence. They have vocally said that fans should just stop saying it because it's annoying.

Pre-reboot DC it was impossible that Tim was clinging to Kon after he came back because Tim had lost EVERYTHING, and he was just a possessive bastard. Or the folks who shit all over Jason Todd fans, saying he'd always been nothing more than a common thug despite all the evidence to the contrary in his initial run and an entire comic dedicated to the fallout of his coming back alive. On BOTH sides of those two arguments people are saying that it's headcanons changing things.

So it's not always entirely clear-cut what is headcanon and what is assumption based on tons of evidence.

Well you didn't ask for my opinion, but as I see it that could go either way. He could have or he might not have. I don't mind if other people think he did though, and I tend to not bother arguing about (or 'correcting', whatever) people's head-canons because it seems like a waste of time. (Plus, headcanons aren't hurting anyone, though, again, I do get the annoyance when those people say their head-canons are canon or imply that anyone who doesn't believe them is wrong.)

Some people just take fandom too seriously, I guess is what I'm saying. Fandom should be fun, not hostile. *shrugs*

Poor Jason, can't ever catch a break, even in fandom apparently.

Hear, hear. I wish more people would keep this in mind. I will admit that I myself even need a reminder of it.

http://comicsalliance.com/bucky-jason-todd-history/ <-written just after Fear Itself, so Bucky's most recent development isn't included, but a fair summery of the poor boy's life.

I think everyone needs a reminder now and then, because none of us are perfect and we all overreact now and then. But for some people that might occasionally, and for others it might be an everyday occurrence. The latter are the ones who definitely need to watch themselves more closely.

That comic is beautiful. Poor Jason Todd. Bucky almost had it good in comparison. (Never thought I'd be saying that...)

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
The fact that nobody in-universe or out never thought "you know, beaten to death and buried alive + Lazarus Pit = good damn reason to think killing is the best option"

In the meantime Cap is swearing at SHIELD agents who imply Bucky should be jailed or somehow controlled, and very purposely made sure Sam would make sure Bucky became not only a hero but make him BELIEVE he was worthy of the shield. L

Ugh. Is this the difference between Marvel and DC? I haven't read enough to say, but from what I've heard it seems like DC just enjoys torturing their character indefinitely and Marvel is better about giving them peace now and then.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody in DC is ever allowed to be happy, yup. They used to be. DC was the optimistic, happy universe where good guys were good, bad guys were bad, and when the good guys did screw up they were forgiven.

About the 2000s, and worse since the reboot, everything is misery and grimdark. A tragic loss.

Marvel is hardly happy, but at least good things happen to characters (North star got married, for example. Although I'm sure someday someone will fridge Kyle). And there is funny, like Loki apparently writing slash fan fiction. And, over in the MCU, things seem to be ACTUALLY optimistic. While DC's movies are...just as grimsark as the comics. :(

I haven't been reading AOA but this is great. (Are there plenty of Thor and Loki moments, or Thor just makes appearances now and then? I assume the latter.)

Though I never even read Journey Into Mystery so...maybe one day.

Is that you, Bucky!anon?

Anon you responded to:

Thank you so much! Hehehe, but that's a great scene. I enjoy seeing them just be brothers, and I don't even read the comics. I might now though...

Nothing wrong with serious stories but sometimes you need a bit of hope and amusement as well. Let's hope one day DC decides to go back to their former formula.

lmao at Loki writing slash fiction. That somehow doesn't surprise me.

Look, I have gained an identity! ^_^v

[personal profile] phyllomania 2014-06-08 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
I can only hope so. People fought the last time the DC universe was in threat of being devoured by grimdark, when Dick Grayson was supposed to be the main death of a massive event and the writers went to the editors and went "We can't do this. He holds the entire DCU together." Nobody fought this time, and if they did they were fired. I've given up on DC. I buy the omnibuses and the trades of old stuff when they come out, in hopes of making sales numbers give a clue to the PTB, but none of the new stuff save one title made me feel any emotion other than dead emptiness or rage. Melodramatic, yes, but my genuine reaction to the reboot.

lmao at Loki writing slash fiction. That somehow doesn't surprise me.

Fandom fairly collectively when "Wait…whut…does this mean what I think it means?" when the issue came out. Once we'd all confirmed with each other that there really wasn't another interpretation there was a hearty laugh and contemplation about what sort of terrible slash he was actually writing.

Yes, he could or could have not - but refusing the acknowledge the possibility is sort of childish.
elaminator: (Captain America: Bucky - dirty)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't know if I'd call it childish, but I don't understand why you would completely deny the possibility just because it seems like something that very well could have happened in canon. Getting pissed at other people for thinking it might have happened is incredibly dumb though.

I can understand people not wanting Bucky to have killed Howard Stark, because it is a horrible thing to consider, but ignoring it or insisting that he didn't do it would be silly. And personally given what we were shown in the movie I think it's more likely than not that Bucky did kill them as the Winter Soldier.

But some people get very funny about head-canons and insisting that they're canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-07 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I feel the same way.

I feel a little bit wary of talking about my favorite ships/fics/headcanons too much on my blog, since for some reason I have a lot of people who follows me who hate those very things, but at the same time, I started feeling annoyed with myself for repressing my opinions to please a bunch of strangers.

Nowadays I'm forcing myself to talk about the things I like, despite my inner voice yelling at me for not trying to please people as I always had, but as you say, a)it's my blog, b)I tag EVERYTHING and c)people can still unfollow me if they get bothered too much.
elaminator: (Dragon Age: Sten)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-07 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, I hope you don't have any haters (of your ships) following you, looking to find a reason to pounce. I've heard a couple horror-stories about that kind of thing (not many!), but I don't think it's too common. Hopefully it'll never come to that.

Either way, I don't think you should have to censor yourself on your own blog. No one is being forced to follow you so the simple fact is they can unfollow you if they want to. Carefully watching what subjects you talk about or reblog is too much effort, imo. Again, fandom should be fun, and if you don't feel like you're getting anything out of it (or what you want, anyway) what's the point?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly I have quite some haters following me, and I'm baffled about that as well, because I clearly specify on my blog's "about page" what ships I follow and what are the things I blog/reblog about, and yet people who hate those keeps following me. :O

I think it could be because I'm a medium/smaller fandom, and so anyone posting about that is better than nothing, I guess. Still, emotions run deep in my fandom, and so I would be lying if I said I'm not a little afraid one of these days I'll be getting hate for posting about the things I like, but I too hope it'll never come to that.

Thank you for your kind words! That's exactly what I keep telling myself and so hearing those words from another person means a lot to me!
elaminator: (Fallout NV: Boone is watching)

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-06-08 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand why anyone follows people they don't share interests with, or that they share interests with but feel completely opposite about. Seems like the frustration wouldn't be worth whatever they're getting out it. (And if they do it just to send the person in question hate-mail for reblogging or posting about something they don't like, then they're total assholes who shouldn't be using the site in the first place.)

:( I've heard from a lot of people who were pleased with being in smaller fandoms, but I guess they have their downsides like any other fandom.
