That behavior sounds really tacky to me. They do sound like they're shoving it at people and I think they should leave people alone unless they ask for recs or something.

You do sound a bit bitter, OP. Mainly because your complaints have nothing to do with the quality of the fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
No matter how brilliant a fic is, incessant pimping and worship can easily make it really irritating.

That sounds really annoying. No matter how good a fic it, there is no such thing as a fic that is the end-all-be-all of a fandom, and it sounds like this narrator is doing the fic a disservice by being so obnoxious about it.

That is kinda tacky, especially depending on how they shove it down people's throats. Not everyone in the fandom is likely to like their fic (and I personally prefer short fanfics).

Yes, I am sure this one fic is why your own fic has low views. Everyone is too busy reading this one fic over and over and over

TELL US!!!!!!

My personal feeling is Written by the Victors in SGA. I haven't actually see it recced like this and know nothing about the narrator, this is a just a guess based on the background picture.

That sounds extremely annoying. I wouldn't say it's enough to deter people from reading other fics, but I'd be wary of the fandom if I saw people were so militant about one single fanwork.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, this sounds really obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-10 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I generally associate massive fandom marketing with lack of quality: in the fandoms I've been in it's always the fics that are overly long and not that great that get spammed everywhere by their authors. So seeing something like that could definitely cause me to turn away from it, even if by chance this one is actually good.

Wow. I'm not sure how I'd feel if, upon mentioning my interest in a fandom, someone immediately tracked me down and messaged me in that way. I think I'd be pretty weirded out, though, because that's a little...creepy.

(Maybe I'm a little weird myself for feeling that way? Meh.)

You're not wrong. That fic is the most aggressively marketed fic I have ever encountered in all of my years in fandom, and I've been around since Usenet.

That would be so freaking annoying. Especially someone lurking Tumblr tags just to rec the fic. That's just creepy.

Everyone wants to know though, WHAT FIC?

Holy shit, that is INCREDIBLY tacky. Constantly self-promoing is obnoxious enough, but I can't fathom the kind of masturbatory self-absorption that would make someone think that sort of "welcome package" is appropriate. I'm embarrassed for this person.

(Although I must confess, this makes me curious about the fic in question. So I guess they were successful.)

Well, the guys surely seems to be damaging the chances of that fic with that behavior. No wonder people are wary and annoyed with that fic.

That being, said, I don't think they are really damaging your chances of your fic being noticed. Sure, there's always this one fic we all love to read over and over again, but after a while, we need more and we'll inevitably search for more fics.

But I would advice you not to sound bitter inside your fandom. Because there's gonna be people who'll honestly love that fic, and if they come to your blog and find you complaining about it, you'll sound bitter then, and that would really hurt your chances. I know because my fandom is similar, and I do love my popular fic, but I also like to find and read other people's fics. Sadly, some angry people from my fandom has gone to the other extreme and has written inflamatory posts insulting the fic and the author, basically saying how no one should read that fic, because it's mediocre (which is not). I won't touch those people's fics with a ten-foot pole now, and I have even blocked several of them, because boy they do sound bitter and jealous, which really, they should not have been, considering I also liked some of their previous works until then.

They've fallen into the other extreme, telling people what to read, which is exactly the same behavior they hated in the first place. You don't want to be those people, OP.

Holy shit wait. I looked up the fic, and the author also wrote a very popular fic for a bigger, more recent fandom. There was a brief wank surrounding that fic, partially about the content of the fic itself, but also about the author having a beta/similar "lackey" respond to criticism and possibly deleting negative comments. Seems like they have a tendency to inspire very passionate fans.

That is so uncool. I hate that kind of shoving-it-down-your-throat behaviour. If I were in your fandom I would avoid that fic on principle.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-11 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you're not out of line. I haven't had the experience to that extent but I certainly know favoritism and I know how hard it is to get a lesser known author out there. Kind of like an indie band trying to make it big while the big companies market the pop stars!
Give us a chance!

Sort of off-topic, but this thread is making me very self-conscious about the promoting I do for my DW communities. :S I need more members for the communities to thrive (they're based either on (1) competition between members, or (2) user-generated prompts), but I feel like promoting them at this point just annoys people and gives them the feeling that there's something bad about the community itself, and that's why I'm so desperate. orz
