Tropes/common twists you hate

We had this a while ago and it was fun, so here goes again!

When a season/book/movie-long problem could've been resolved if Person A had just been upfront with Person B.

I mean, it's one thing when it's in character for the person to hide it or when someone actually HAS to hide it, but when things just go to hell because no one thought it important enough to mention... argh.

Pretty much my whole issue with the third season of Angel. I could actually buy Wesley doing what he did, but to not mention it to anyone? Even Fred, the girl he was supposed to be in love with, who would be earnest enough to listen?

yep. If people would just talk to each other, so many problems could be avoided.

supernatural comes to mind. it's basically the poor communication kills trope played over and over again like a scratched disk.

This is my least favorite RL twist, too.

"But I was just trying to protect you! How was I supposed to know that you'd make friends with that serial killer. And I'm sorry that my family tried to have you arrested, because I didn't tell them that you had nothing to do with the murders."

Yes; when the entire problem could have been fixed by a short conversation or a text, but the show forgets that people can talk.

Hero fights badguy, but has a hard time of it. Sidekick leaps in and is killed. Hero immediately fights harder and wins.

If they could do it after the death, why not before?

When a previously straight character falls in love with a character of the same gender, and suddenly they're "gay now." It's one thing if it was a matter of the person being closeted, and sometimes you could argue that, but other times it feels like bisexuals are just not allowed to exist.

Trope: Giving an otherwise perfect character flaws, but those flaws never actually causes them any serious problems or holds them back at all. So in effect they're not really flaws, but the author/fanbase always bring them up in their whining defenses of why the character is totally not an unrealistic overly-perfect Mary Sue/Gary Stu, we swear! (Example: Kingkiller Chronicles)

One at the top of my head because I was thinking about time travel for something I may or may not write...closed time loops - it happened because it happened, therefor it had to happen. It offends me on an ontological level.

Similarly, lack of ontological inertia, unless there's a DAMN good reason why the effect goes away when the cause does.

A close relative that has never been mentioned before shows up. Bonus points, if they have been assumed dead.

Someone pulls a new skill or power out of their ass just in time to beat the villain.

The villain, who has so far been incredibly dangerous and smart, suddenly becomes completely useless so that the hero can win.

Instead of learning and growing as a person in order to become a hero, it turns out that they don't need to do that because they were born special/were the prophesied savior.

A character who's willing to do horrible things to save their One True Love is rewarded as heroic for being so selflessly devoted.

I have no idea how to describe the trope that I hate, but I'm going to try.

So, your hero's been wronged by members of a group. S/he starts to hate all members of that group, even though individual members of it treat her/him well. As a result, s/he winds up doing or going along with something profoundly stupid that fucks everything up for everyone. Often, it gets someone close to her/him killed.

I get that prejudice exists, and I'm okay with a narrative exploring it. But I've come to hate when it's developed in this way.

Two established characters suddenly turn out to be related to each other.

Character A says something mean or stupid. Character B, who has never shown signs of a violent streak, slaps or punches them. You can practically see the cue cards telling the audience to applaud.

Biological ties/being biologically related trump all. Like, character meets their birth parent, and they have such a magical bond, which is so much more special than their relationship with their adoptive guardian. As someone adopted, and who loves their adopted family, this trope just pisses me off.

"This was all an allegory for the tragic things that really happened to Protagonist." It's "it was all a dream" with an extra layer of pretentious.

When the investigators/detectives/heroes are written as unrealistically stupid to make the villain look smarter.

(S2 of Hannibal was sort of veering this way.)

That popular manga/doaram trope of "girl disguises herself as guy, other guy falls in love, starts questioning his sexuality, comes to terms with it, confesses - phew, you're in luck, she's really a girl!". I hate this trope so, so much.
