Can't people just discuss the aspects of fiction that they happen to like?
I assume the saner fans know that whenever they extrapolate from whatever story points that excite them, it's THEIR extrapolation, not the original author's. Fans aren't required to see stories from the original author's point of view, and I assume that some parts of fandom would simply curl up and die should that become a requirement.
