But why anon? Too many people already? Do you not like those characters? Do you like how those studios are handling them?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The MCU fandom is too large and full of AU's and wank for my taste, and I like the X-Men and Spider-Man miles more than any of the MCU heroes

X-Men, yes. Just because at this point with First Class and Days of Future Past they know what they're doing and they're better off in their own little universe. Plus I've always thought that discrimination against people with superpowers is kind of silly in a universe where the Fantastic Four and Avengers exist.

Spider-Man at this point is a festering anus of mediocrity so getting absorbed into the MCU could only help.

I don't think they would mesh well either, though I think it would be interesting to see the characters meet. It just wouldn't work, though. They don't feel like the same universe. (Seeing as The Avengers now have a fanbase in verse and are (apparently) widely thought of as heroes, it would be odd to have the X-Men feared and mutants hated in the same verse.)

Poor Spider-Man for being compared to a festering anus though...*shudder* I didn't see the last movie, but it can't be that bad.

Fantastic Four is still owned by FOX, so at this point not even the Avengers and FF share thes ame movieverse.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. It's kind of hard for me to explain, but I think their tones just don't mesh very well. Like, no matter how bad things are in the MCU, there's the feeling (at least for me) that things will get better, and the ends are still hopeful, no matter what happened along the way. They're not necessarily "lighter", but they make me feel better about myself and my life.

The X-Men movies didn't do that for me, and the newer Spiderman movies had their moments, but at times they still felt less hopeful.

I....sort of agree?

I do think sometimes Spiderman is a shame but I'm not too cut up about it (because IMO AoU already looks like it's getting pretty full cast wise...) and X-Men? If it existed exactly as it does in the current movieverse I'd worry Avengers films would turn into "Wolverine and The Avengers" - I know it's not likely that things would exactly be the same, but if we're playing pretend that's one of my fears. Also I'm not sure how mutants on Earth would fit with the sort of universe that exists in the MCU as it currently stands.

So do I? I like the X-Men universe to stay in its own universe, and I don't think the new Spider-Man films are compatible with the MCU, so...what? Are you under the impression that being part of the MCU "legitimizes" them or something? IDGI.
kaijinscendre: (Default)

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-06-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? I think the new Spider-Man movies are way more compatible with the MCU than the old ones. They rely more on technology (his webspinners being made by Peter) as opposed to voodoo science (his web coming from his actual body).

No, the exact opposite. I really really like the new X-Men movies and I seem to be the only person on the planet who's enjoying the new Spider-Man films, but the few times I've dipped into the MCU fandom I haven't enjoyed it at all. I still like the MCU movies (except Thor), but I'd rather participate in two smaller fandoms than one colossal one.

... hrm. At first I disagreed, but I'm kind of coming around on it. Just because, if they were part of the MCU, it would increase the amount of continuity porn exponentially with the numbers of crossovers they'd try to do, and also because it would probably mean we'd never get a Doctor Strange project or the Defenders stuff they're doing through Netflix or any of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I was all for the X-men returning to Marvel until DOFP came out. I think they handled it so well that I'm eager to see what happens next.

Spider-man needs to go back to Marvel though.

Hmm, part of me would like Spiderman in the MCU simply because he's one of my favourite superheroes and I'd love to see him in an Avengers film, but I also like him being in his own universe as well so I'm not sure I'd change it tbh.

The X-Men movies however I like being separate, but that's only because I have the fear that Wolverine would take over the MCU if he was in it.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Is this because you don't like those franchises, or because you don't like the MCU? I agree that they're better separate, but I'm curious.

(Anonymous) 2014-06-28 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
As said above, I didn't really enjoy my brief time in the MCU fandom and now actively avoid it when I can. But XMFC is what got me into superhero movies, and I actually really liked the new Spider-Man movies, so I'm glad both franchises are separate.

It's like liking French fries but not wanting them on your pizza.

I guess I don't understand. Is the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" a term that Marvel/Disney uses or a fan-created designation? Because from where I sit, they're all cinematic experiences created by Marvel. Therefore X-Men and Spiderman are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Why not call it "Avengers-verse" instead?
cushlamochree: o malley color (Default)

[personal profile] cushlamochree 2014-06-28 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The X-Men, Spiderman, and Fantastic Four films aren't made by Marvel Studios. The rights to those characters were licensed out to other companies. For that reason, those characters also can't appear in the films that are made by Marvel Studios. So that's where the distinction comes from.

And FWIW it is a term that comes from Marvel originally, I think.

Agreed.

I don't care much for Fox's X-Men franchise and actually think X-men should be divorce from a good portion of Marvel since a lot of the time I feel they don't gel much in the actual Marvel Universe due to the whole mutants are freaks but other superheros with weird powers are okay. I know Civil War sucks, but the whole superhero registration act just made it weirder to me since that's basically the X-Men's thing.

Spider-Man I don't want to become apart of the MCU because I don't want him inevitably on the Avengers. I hate the concept of Spider-Man on the Avengers, and I hate that Bendis put him on it (along with Daredevil) and Bendis' Avengers sucked, in my opinion. The most unfortunate part of it all is I will never get a street movie Spider-Man/Daredevil movie, but if that means the Avengers never get their hands on Spidey I want Sony to keep him as faraway as they possibly can.

Also, I would rather not see more inevitable shitting on Mary Jane.

I've been mildly entertained by to actively hostile towards (fuck Last Stand and First Class) the X-Men movies, while all the MCU movies have been A+ awesome in my book, so yeah, I'm glad, too. (Unless Marvel reboots the X-Men movieverse with fresh actors and better writing, of course.)

I think I agree mostly on the basis that they've done a good job balancing a wide array of characters so far, but trying to bring in the entire X-Men premise for one could get overwhelming, and it just feels a little late in the game for it to be done naturally. Though, that doesn't stop me from wondering how some of the Avengers would react with a much younger superhero character showing up.

Me too, but in my case it's because I love the six core avengers and don't want their appearances diluted any more than they have to be.

I am too, but for the opposite reasons.

The Garfield Spider-Man films are terrible and unnecessary, and while X-men is fine I'm glad I don't have to worry about Wolverine taking over MCU as well. Also, Brian Singer.
