1. Matilda
2. Annie
3. A Chorus Line (kind of? There's some discussion of a past relationship but it's not central to the plot)

Really? Well, there are quite a few without romance. Maybe you can start a rec thread in the GC?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Willly Wonka.
Sunday in the Park with George
Assassins
Sweeney Todd
Jesus Christ superstar
Godspell
Hair

I'm sure there are more OP. I'm not even a big musical fan. Although I would recommend Matilda if you've not seen that. It's the best!

Sweeney Todd has two romance subplots, though.

no kidding I was about to drop a comment saying "HAY CHECK OUT ASSASSINS" but I see you've already done that for me.

Also, JC Superstar arguably has a romance plot (or two), so Anon's mileage may vary with that one.

I love Sunday in the Park, but it definitely has romance. "We have always belonged together / We will always belong together," anyone?

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
1776 (for the most part)
Assassins
Pacific Overtures
Book of Mormon
Godspell
Jesus Christ Superstar
Cats
25th Annual Putam County Spelling Bee (okay, a slight thing with Barfee and Olive)
Chicago
Nunsense (and its many sequels)

It's difficult, I'll grant you that!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is another. It was my favorite as a kid.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't Book of Mormon have a romance subplot? "Baptize me," etc? I mean, I guess it's pretty minimal.

OP

Thank you for all the recommendations. I really like violent musicals, so it was disappointing when there were romantic songs in Sweeney Todd. Are there any really violent musicals without romance?

Assassins has one love song, but as it's two deranged assassins singing about the people they're trying to kill for (a duet between Squeaky Frome singing to Charles Manson and John Hinkley singing to Jodie Foster), I don't really consider it 'romance'.

OP would probably not enjoy 'Parade', but people who like dark musicals and don't mind a little love mixed in might.

I believe there is an Evil Dead musical, but I don't know if it has romance.

Chicago? It's set in a women's prison in the 1920. Any references to love in it are pretty tongue-in-cheek, and there aren't many.

Seconding Chicago.

ETA: Oh and someone mentioned Repo: the Genetic Opera down thread. That is pretty much exactly what you described. Lots of violence and gore. The only romance is a love triangle between the main character's dad, the big bad, and the main character's mom who died years and years before the story begins, and the songs that involve said dead mother are not romantic.

I think Chicago is arguably the better film/musical, but I you'd really enjoy Repo based on what you described.

Trying to think of things that haven't been named...

Man of La Mancha
Mary Poppins
Raggedy Ann and Andy (Joe Raposo at his sweetest!)
You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown

Stuff I haven't seen, but I think has no romance:
Spamalot
Seussical

Very minor romance (like, there are characters who acknowledge their attraction but it's not a focus--your mileage may vary):
Reefer Madness
Mulan
Joseph King of Dreams

...if I think of more I shall edit!

I don't think Billy Bishop Goes to War has any romance, but good freakin' luck finding a recording.

...and if you do please let me know.

It is really hard to find musicals without romance! I listed some that may be useful to you below. Good luck, and it is tiresome to have romance endlessly.

Cats
Assassins (one song with romanticish feelings, but actually about murdering for the one you adore from afar)
Gypsy has the mom who has an attempted romance and maybe one song?
Urinetown has romance, but it's totally ridiculous, deconstructed, and not the point at all. Just serves the plot. No happy ending, either.
The Color Purple has some romance, but it's all B plot.
Spamalot has two romances, one entirely stupid and contrived (and made to be so) and one not-heterosexual, if that helps? Still not the A-plot.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
To add to the list, Billy Elliot has no romance. Does Joseph and the technicolor Dreamcoat feature romance? I've honeslty forgotten.

Otherwise, Ushers does the straigt romance very ironically (VERY ironically), but the gay couple's romance is played straight, so to speak. Dirty Rotten Scroundels also uses it to comedic effect (con men who swindle women out of the money by making them fall for them).

I don't think there's any romance in Oliver! There's definitely a relationship, but iirc it's extremely dysfunctional and not portrayed as romantic.

musicals DO kinda have to hit as many factors as possible to draw as big a crowd as possible, so romance is really common. I do see your dilemma.

It's a very romance-heavy genre, no lie. Let's see... Repo is mostly a coming of age story. Tommy is just a big ball of the Who. The Wall has a husband and wife, but it's not a romance story.

These are all operas/rock operas, huh? I do not musical good. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a few romantic subplots in Hair, but they are not the focus of the show.

I'm not a fan of romcoms, but I do love the song "Frank Mills".

Try japanese musicals.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
Dancer in the Dark - musical with a punch to the guts.
