gangsta., the manga? If so, PLEASE TALK TO ME ABOUT IT. I NEED SOMEBODY ELSE TO SHARE THESE FEELINGS WITH.

(If not, feel free to use this thread to find others to chat with about a show/book/band/etc.)

I've read the first volume.

We have someone tremendously into it here though, so if you wait I imagine they'll turn up.

Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-08-13 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't (and this is my first time hearing of it), but has anyone here read/watched Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball?

I don't know what made me watch Haikyu!!... I've never watched a sports anime before in my life (unless you count Free!, and Free! feels more about friendship and abs than swimming) and don't even particularly like sports, but for some reason I decided to give it a go and now I'm in love. This cast is so fucking adorable and likable and I'm way too invested in their success (like seriously, I never cheer this much), and suddenly I really, really wish I had played volleyball in high school. And I actually feel like I've learned a bit about the game! And appreciate it more! If anyone here has read the manga and watched the anime, would you recommend reading the manga? Does the anime follow the manga closely? Is it super long?

Anyway, after I caught up with Haikyu!! I thought, "Maybe I'd like other sports anime, too!" so I pretty much randomly picked Kuroko's Basketball and though I'm not quite half-finished, I'm enjoying it too. Not quite as much (the development of the teams skills feels much more natural in Haiku, and I don't find the cast as interesting), but it's still a lot of fun and the games are very exciting.

(While I'm at it, any other sports anime you would rec?)

I'm told Eyeshield21 is about football and pretty funny!

I could be wrong, but I believe Rookies is about baseball, and I know it was pretty popular, so you could look into that as well? (I'm not terribly knowledgeable about it though, sorry)

Ooh, I forgot about Rookies! Yeah, it's about baseball (a combination of baseball and delinquents manga, really) and it's quite good!

Ooo, football is the sport I'm least interested in BUT I think half the reason I'm so into these shows is the character development, ridiculous angst and shippy vibes, coupled with the intensity of the games themselves, so football would do just as well, I imagine. I will most likely watch them! Thanks for the suggestions!

When you said you don't like football, does that only goes for American-football? Cause Shoot! the manga, is a (non American-)football manga, and it's quite entertaining, too. The artwork isn't anything to write home about, but I like it anyway.

I read/watch a lot of sports manga/anime. I generally like most of them, for different reasons. Or maybe I'm just easy for sports manga. H2 is baseball, and so is Touch, although Touch is rather heavy on the romance subplot.

Slam Dunk is a basketball manga and of course a classic, though blasphemously I like Harlem Beat more when it comes to basketball.

There was that one kendo manga and one track and field one that I read back in elementary school that I liked but can't remember the name of. Also a few karate ones.

I like KuroBa, read and watched it, too. I think the manga is mor detailed (naturally) than the anime, so maybe you'll get slightly more development that way. I've slightly more and more irked by the main character though, so it kind of affected my enjoyment of the series.

Out of the ones you mentioned I've only heard of Slam Dunk. I know it's insanely popular but I decided to wait on that one because it was longer. I might give it a shot later though, along with Harlem Beat if I can find it.

Actually... I'll just bookmark this thread, do some research on these other ones. The kendo, track and field and karate ones sound pretty cool! I wasn't aware there were sports anime for those. Might have to Google for them.

If I may ask, what don't you like about him? Or would that be a major spoiler? I find him okay so far; he's kind of unassuming but easy to cheer for, but I can see how he wouldn't be the most interesting guy to focus an anime on. It isn't bothering me right now (I find his former teammates almost obsession with him hilarious), but maybe after I get further into the anime it'll hit me too.

Thanks for the recs!

Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

[personal profile] takaraikarin 2014-08-13 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
The kendo and the track and field ones were never made into anime, as far as I know, they're manga, and I don't know how internationally well-known they are. I don't think they were ever translated into English? I think Harlem Beat was, though.

It's tricky with Kuroko, but he's reminds me more and more of the kind of main characters that I don't like in harem-ish BL games, in that everything more or less revolves around him. I know I'm being silly, he's the main character, that's kinda the point, but what you said about his former teammates' obsession with him, that you found hilarious, I've found that pretty tiring by now. I also found that he can be pretty callous at times, but the narrative never challenged that and there's never any repercussions for it. I don't want to be spoilery so I won't go into details (and besides, these might just be me. He's constantly been the most popular character in characters polls, so clearly most people don't have the same issue).

Can I rec the Inazuma Eleven video games for DS? Especially the first trilogy. They're these shounen soccer rpgs about starting a soccer team, getting it off the ground, and WINNING and FRIENDS, and they warm my heart cockles. There's also the manga and anime based on them, but it's pretty much kids stuff even if it's charming.

eta: Oh. You know what I forgot to mention about it. It's not realistic at all. At all. Shit. Maybe I shouldn't have usggested that at all oh cripes

lmao, holy shit that clip! I have a feeling this would be fun to watch because of how unrealistic it is. Might give it a try later!

You can certainly rec them! IDK if I'll end up buying them or not, but they sound fun and I don't use my DS as much as I should... Hmm, I will think about this. Maybe I can get someone to buy me one as a Christmas present this year.

I experienced a resurgence of interest in KNB due to a secret on here that criticized the protagonist's behavior, which got me curious because I hadn't noticed any of it before. So I went back to the manga and caught up on all the new chapters and... I still don't really see OP's point. Like, many of the instances they talked about were played for laughs, and I'm really forgiving of callous comedic behavior (in anime/manga). Kind of reminds me of fans who call out characters for being 'abusive' when they engage in slapstick violence.

But that aside, it did get me back in the fandom and I'm reading fic again and it's all good. I wouldn't say I'm a fan of sports manga but I may have a weak spot for basketball manga (despite... not liking... the sport???). Loved Slam Dunk, but my obsession of many years was actually a little known series called I'll. Short, beautifully-drawn, and very character-driven. It used to be a nightmare trying to find scans but apparently it's all online now: http://www.mangahere.co/manga/i_ll_generation_basket. How the times change.

Was the complaint regarding Kuroko being violent? The only violence I've seen him engage in so far was punching Kagami when Kagami decided he could win a game all on his own. (Which I admit wasn't great, but it isn't something I could hate the main character for.) I can't imagine him being violent regularly...that doesn't seem like his style. But I guess I'm not far in the anime too, so that could change. As for callous behavior...I guess I'll have to see when I get there? He can be a bit unfeeling, and I DO wish he had a bit more...spark, but he seems polite enough right now and cares about his teammates a great deal. (Even if he's bad at showing it.)

Another Slam Dunk fan! I should check that out. And thank you for the link to this manga; I'll definitely read it, especially if it's short and character driven.

despite... not liking... the sport???

Haha, I can't remember the last time I sat down and watched sports; it just doesn't happen. On the few occasions I've been to games I've enjoyed them, but it isn't something I want to spend my time on. For some reason putting it in anime form changes everything. How, idk. (Guess the humor and characters?)

Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

[personal profile] ronsard 2014-08-13 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I don't think this particular criticism was about violence -- I think it might have initially been about shipping, actually, and how Kuroko's treatment of Kagami was unfair and heavily colored by his past with Aomine. Wait here's that secret now, but iirc OP had previously started a thread in GC and elaborated further. This is going into spoilers territory now and you've said you haven't gotten that far into the series, but the gist of it, sans shipping blah-blahs, is that Kuroko does and says callous things from time to time that do not take into account Kagami's feelings. I personally see no evidence in the series that Kagami realizes or even cares, and Kagami is my fave so I'd probably have something to say on the matter if he did, but he... doesn't?

I do find something rather ruthless in the way Kuroko so fervently believes that he's right, but I also don't necessarily think that's a bad thing :\ In general I like the Seirin team dynamics a lot and don't really read anything dark or twisty into it.

Oh man, I like soccer a ridiculous amounts but find soccer manga so boring. Like, around the same time I was reading SD almost everyone else I grew up with was reading Captain Tsubasa, but I just could not get into it. Well hey, I mean, it makes perfect sense for anime sports to be more engaging... after all it's not like IRL athletes are in the habit of jumping 50 feet or shooting lasers out their eyes! :D

Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

(Anonymous) 2014-08-13 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Haikyuu!! Really is so damned adorable. There isn't a single character I dislike - that never happens! There are characters I like less than others, but all in all, everyone is kind of endearing to teeth-rottingly cute.
I also love that it has a mostly solid to great animation quality.

I'm not up-to-date with the manga, but as far as I've seen, it's very close. I like the manga as well (there are some really gorgeous water-colour illustrations in there and the facial expression are hilarious) but I prefer the anime because the movements, speed and the games in general translate better to me in animated form than in static panel form. But that's a matter of preference.
I also think they're doing a great job with the pacing. One thing I always hated about shônen and sports anime is when one single match/fight/whatever takes up 5-10 damn episodes. On Haikyuu!!, a match rarely takes much longer than one episode per set.
(This was something that annoyed me endlessly about Yowamushi Pedal - they kept stretching short distances like 200 meters over 2 episodes by throwing in endless monologues, flashbacks and rousing speeches. It annoyed me so much that I stopped watching.)

And I was exactly the same - I thought "Hey, mabye sports anime aren't as dull as I remember, let's try KnB since it's so popular" - and I honestly couldn't make it through the first episode because I disliked both the characters, the style and the quality so much.

Re: Haikyu!! or Kuroko's Basketball

[personal profile] elaminator 2014-08-13 01:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yesssssssssssss, finally someone else knows Haikuu!! This makes me so happy.

Isn't the cast adorable? Hinata is the best and Kageyama is a little shit but a strangely endearing little shit, and Nishinoya is just the sweetest little ball of talent you'll ever meet (he stopped a ball with his foot) and Tanaka always, always make me laugh and smile. Asahi is super hot and I love the gentle giant thing he's got going on. They're all so wonderful and cute.

I've been very impressed by the animation! I didn't think it would be anywhere near this smooth, but I have no complaints.

Eek, you've just guaranteed I'll never watch Yowamushi Pedal...that sounds unbearable. I don't mind matches taking a bit (two episodes isn't terrible), but anything over that starts to get ridiculous. The pace of Haikyuu!! is perfect for me. I also like that the characters are always playing or practicing, so when they improve it actually feels like they've earned it. None of that, "Here's a training montage, and suddenly the team is two times as powerful!" shit. It feels very realistic and easy to follow.

Thanks for your comment! I think I'll try to read the manga as well, though it might be a bit before I get to it. I love this cast so much, I can't imagine it letting me down.

Aww, you didn't make it through the first episode of Kuroko's Basketball? I'm about...15 episodes into the series, I think? TBH I don't find this anime half as good as Haikuu!!, but I am still enjoying it more than I thought I would. The thing that I don't like about Kuroko's Basketball is it focuses so much on the two mains and little on the rest of the team. IMO the mains aren't incredibly interesting but are still fun to watch, but the rest of the team feels pretty flat and undeveloped. Haikyuu!! does a great job of stressing Hinata and Kageyama's importance while still letting other characters have their moments and get development. They feel more like a team, and their friendships and relationships feel more natural.

Ehh, watever, I'll just log in!

I don't normally love the small-and-bubbly main character types but Hinata is just too adorable not to love. And Kageyama is so great - you think he'll be the stereotypical cool and aloof, overly talented deuteragonist but he's actually such a sweet guy who just really fails at socialising X'D
And everyone else is so precious as well - and not just the main team, but the rival teams as well (I am forever in love with Kuroo and Kenma).

YowaPeda wasn't all bad, I guess, but it had this mix of things I really don't like about sports anime (Main character who is so freaky talented he wins against everyone all the time, no matter how much more they trained, constant flashbacks, one race that takes forever and comically OTT character designs and the "antagonist" is just ridiculous).

I think I would read the Haikyuu manga more regularly if there was a physical copy I could read - but the Japanese import is so expensive and it hasn't been licensed in English (only in French and my French is terrible). I don't really like reading manga on a computer screen.

I think one of the main reasons I disliked KnB is because the main character was so ... bland. I mean, he's supposed to be like that, I guess. But yeah. Also, the way they're all colour coded is so weird...
Plus: I don't really like Basketball X''D
Volleyball is at least somehow interesting for me - but sports that don't interest me are hard to watch. It's why I never watched Prince of Tennis and why Yowapeda is so dull to me. (I wish we could have a nice football anime in the style and quality of Haikyuu. Inazuma 11 never looked like something that could interest me.)

Did somebody say Gangsta?!

I've read up to chapter 24, but it's been awhile since the scanlations started updating again (I know, I know, but I'm buying the books as they come out in English), so I'm doing a re-read right now to refresh my memory. It's even better the second time around! The art is just so fucking amazing, not enough artists have that lanky, expressive, grungy style with lots of blackspace, I'm so grateful to the tumblr for uploading scans of the artbook, it's gorgeous. I've heard that shit gets particularly real from chapter 25 onwards so I'm trying to avoid spoilers, but first read I was so anxious for Alex to reunite with you-know-who (does anyone know who?) and I hope nothing awful happens before then, it would just kill me.

HEEEEE ♥♥♥

It's translated up to 28 on goodmanga AFAIK, but the 6th volume just came out last month, too, so it may take time for them to catch up. I read the untranslated version since I couldn't wait, but I'll do my best not to spoil anything. I totally agree, though, I spent hours going through the tumblr tag and just admiring the art. I especially love Loretta and Doug, I'm not sure why. But the shots with Nic and Worick standing side by side are gorgeous too. Ahhhhhhhhh I JUST REALLY LOVE IT

Thanks! Ah, shit, man, I forgot that it was so far along, I'll probably end up "reading" the raws myself. Latest raws seem to be from 30 to 34 (chapter 29 scanlation just went live a few hours ago, so that's badass). Who doesn't adore Doug? He's such an awesome little shit, but he wasn't doing so hot last I saw him, and then some reactions on tumblr scared the hell out of me. This manga seems like it'll kick all the puppies the longer it goes on, if Rick and Nic's backstories are any indication.

Those portraits of Worick and Nic are definitely the coolest, I really hope the anime looks half as good as those. If there's a God, Madhouse will animate it and it'll look like a gangster version of Hellsing Ultimate.

EDIT: Goddamnit Doug ;__;

OMG WHERE'S THE CHAPTER 29 SCANALATION? As far as I know it's only been released up to 34--do you know if the chapters are put out in a magazine, or if it's only by volume? I poked around a bit but I'm not that familiar with manga, so I wasn't really sure. AND YES I am anticipating a lot of heartbreak. T_T There's already been so much, sob.

Yeah, I've got my fingers crossed that the anime will do it justice. And !!!! I was just thinking the other day that it reminded me a little of Hellsing! I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

YES T_T Just wait until you catch up. JUST WAIT.
