Heaven forfend people default to imagining incompletely described characters in their own image/experience.

Headcanon accepted.

He doesn't actually speak English very well, he just memorizes his lines. I'd imagine voicing an entire series would be too hard.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that struck me too. How on earth did they persuade the judge who was handling the custody agreements to agree to that one?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, I had ALL THE FEELS for Goren in that episode. Something about a big, intellectually intimidating guy breaking down like that melts my heart. Aaaaand maybe my panties.

Kitchens and whatnot

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, there's a leak under my kitchen sink. And it seems to be coming from the garbage disposal area (which I never use, but the drain I use flows through it), which means I'm not comfortable just learning something and fixing it myself.

Which means now I have to call my landlord and get the maintenance guy out here, which means I have to step up my cleaning efforts so I don't look like such a grossy gross pig person, which is hard to do when MY SINK IS LEAKING. I predict a lot of dishes sitting in the oven.

"There's no rule on the books that says a dog can't play basketball a custody agreement can't work that way!"

This is exactly how it was for me too. I don't usually think much about a character's appearance when reading, so it's always jarring for me to see them interpreted in a visual medium.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the anon who replied to OP right below you, and that's how I felt too. Shadow's personality was so bland that his race made no impression on me whatsoever. If you told me he was supposed to be black, ok. Asian, ok. White? Ok.

If someone asked me, I'd have guessed white but only because the author is white too and I'd assume a white guy would write a white guy, and not because of "Shadow" the character at all. But then I generally don't bothers to imagine book characters' physical features unless they make a difference, which they didn't.

Her stunt double is.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Jeeves is the best, though I find it difficult to think of him as a sexual being.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Except the fact that Shadow is frequently POINTED OUT TO BE mixed race, with people REGULARLY COMMENTING ON THE AMBUGUITY, is kind of a plot point.

Aw, I like Markiplier too, although his latest videos have been much louder and sillier. I don't remember his earlier stuff being so overly dramatic.

...I still love him though. Particularly when he sincerely laughs. He's got one of those nice deep chuckles. ;3;

Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Or any other kind of snob, so that something should be a perfect quality, whereupon everybody else are not all that bothered about it?

What 4chan boards do you frequent?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC, it's implied he's a mix, but I can't remember if the book specifies what. However, a prison guard calls him the n-word very early on.

Uh, old films are not everyone's cup of tea. But I sort of hate the kind of people who insist on holding decades-old films to the same standards as if they were made today. Yes, sometimes they will be racist, or misogynist, or whatever to modern eyes. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy them for what they are.

And enjoying the dance, music and choreography is a perfectly valid reason. That being said, you can't force someone to like something - you can just question their taste.

DA

What plot point was it? The book thoroughly bored me, I legit don't remember. When was it a point?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Where is it indicated in the first chapter? I'm asking just for clarity, because I don't have a copy to hand, and I haven't read it in many, many years and don't remember how it's described either way.

He really was quite bland; The reason I picked up the book was because he was a mixed race protagonist, but I couldn't finish.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, you could get there pretty easily by a couple different routes:

(1) A really half-hearted reading of the book.
(2) A fairly thorough reading of the book and an assumption that Odin's son is white.
sabotabby: (books!)

Don't get why this is a problem or weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... Pretty sure I've seen talk show interviews with him and while it's clear English isn't his first language, he doesn't have to memorize lines like a robot for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you imagine having to be saved by Goren, though? That sounds awful.

I wish. All my tea just tastes like grass unless I make it with my keurig.

The only thing I might be picky about is seared tuna. Some people cook it too much.
