Re: What 4chan boards do you frequent?

/a/ when I want to discuss anime/manga quickly after episodes or chapters get out. It's good for obscure stuff too. I avoid the obnoxious threads and drama (except on some cases when it looks like it'll be funny)

/u/ because I'm mostly into yuri/femslash ships.

/co/ usually, like I'm doing at this very moment on a thread for a textless preview for the next New Avengers issue. I used to go to /vg/ a lot a few months ago when I was really into Animal Crossing: New Leaf, though I lost interest atm, and I'm not too interested in the frequent generals they have atm too. Occasionally /tv/ but that's not too frequent.

A lot of things - but I can't tell the difference between growing out of it or depression.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
that's still pretty far from "he is obviously and unambiguously stated to be non-white in the first chapter"

If you wanted to avoid spoiling people you should have probably waited for the comments to collapse a bit more.

Yes, I totally agree on some films being more progressive that people give them credit for! Or, having really interesting subtext that implies the makers want to convey some things but can't do so outright.

And it's a pity because sometimes I see people focus on one tings that bothers them, while they dismiss the 8 thing the movie DID do right.

In my paperback copy, page 12 is the first hint that Shadow is maybe not white:

"I don't get you, Shadow," said Wilson, as they walked.
"What's not to get, sir?"
"You. You're too fucking quiet. Too polite. You wait like the old guys but you're what? Twenty-five? Twenty-eight?"
"Thirty-two, sir."
"And what are you? A spic? A gypsy?"
"Not that I know of, sir. Maybe."
"Maybe you got nigger blood in you. You got bigger blood in you, Shadow?"
"Could be, sir." Shadow stood tall and looked ahead, and concentrated on not allowing himself to be riled by this man.

It's not too in your face about it, but Gaiman's clearly trying to sneak in physical description of his main character via the interrogation with the prison guard.

Yeah, mte.

My husband is "default white" but also fairly swarthy and generically ethnic-looking. His dad is Scandanavian and his mom is Austrian. Go figure.

If I had to pick a PB or something, I'd say I personally pictured someone vaguely like Wentworth Miller the whole time. He's mixed race, but it's ambiguous enough (like Shadow) for people to be unsure, and if someone mistook him for totally white I wouldn't blame them for it.

I wonder how many people are gonna read this and go "What? Wentworth Miller isn't white?"

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
it's even further away from "he is obviously and unambigiously stated to be a WHITE character" though

Used to hang out on /x/.

That picture is so fucking cute omfg

I don't know about you, OP, but I'd love to have a friend who was so comfortable with me that he could feel totally comfortable with pushing me around and ragging on me a bit, knowing that I wouldn't hold it against him.

I mean, okay, I guess (from what I remember) Hutch crossed the line a couple times, but still...

It gets bitter at high percentages, imo.

As someone who pops in there every once in a while, it's usually just "X show/anime/manga/whatever threads for yuri of it," and only a few threads of a themed or general yuri pics. It's a little like /y/ that way.

ugggghhhh (whining ahead)

so i got rejected by my dream company without even getting an interview. i had someone working there in a high position forward my application and it was only and internship and they still rejected me.

and now i've fallen into this super deep pit of shitty depression and the worst part is that these weeks were my finals. i actually didn't manage to study for them at all and didn't do any of my essays so i skipped out on an exam today hoping that i'll be able to retake it. i'll pass even if i don't, but my prof is kinda super important in the industry and i'm stressing out so much. worst part is if i retake that exam i'm still not sure if i could pass it because it's a fucking horrible topic that i just can't wrap my head around and i feel like i SHOULD because it's part of my fucking job to know those things.

ugh.

and tomorrow is our end of semester party and i just don't feel ready to leave school yet and go out and work but worst of all APPLY because i'm scared shitless of application tests and interviews and all that shit and i don't want to work anywhere else but at that company, but i know if i want to have a chance there i have to gain work experience or something and that's a shitty mindset to bring to an application too. the other company that might take me and that seems interesting does work which i'm not a big fan of and they're in a different city and hiring long-term so i'm not sure how shitty it would be to apply there and then piss off the moment i get a chance at my dream company. the industry is pretty tight knit and all.

and today the guy who forwarded my application encouraged me to send it again "beginning next year" and i'm not sure if i should take that seriously or if he's just saying that, because he's just a nice guy and very encouraging to people in general.

I rarely watch video game reviews but Yahtzee DOES have a fantastic voice (on top of being a funny guy). Don't think I could fall asleep whilst listening to it, haha, but if it works for you that's cool?

"All indications of his skin colour are from characters in the book, and none of them can say with any certainty he is not white."

That's not really what I take away from your examples, though. If people are asking, they're asking because they're pretty sure he's something other than white, otherwise they wouldn't be asking. In fact, the examples you cite suggest that if they're sure of anything, they're certain he's not white and they're trying to ascertain what that "other" is.

Thirded. In general, I'm just not a visual person, so I tend to not put that much thought into how things look and I don't really 'see' books in my head.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm trying to develop thirteen different amoral personalities. Well, they're kinda developing on their own as I write the characters, but how well it works is limited to how good a writer I am. Right now I have a sadistic Bond villain wannabe and a guy who might be kind of not terrible if he didn't constantly have his head in the sand. Waiting on reader feedback to see if I'm pulling it off or if they're coming out totally flat.

Either way, eleven to go, and if I'm shit now, I'll be better someday.

Heh, that gives me another ting to worry about really. I have been down lately, but it's sometime hard to tell if it's just circumstance or ctual depression.

Re: Are you a tea/coffee/chocolate snob?

[identity profile] flipthefrog.livejournal.com 2014-08-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, and that's why it's amazing. you get up into like the 85 range, it stops tasting like chocolate and gets these really nice floral or fruity notes. you can't just chow down on the whole bar, have to savor it, let it melt in your mouth a little.

This made me laugh because this is my conundrum too. Do I not care because I'm not interested anymore, or is it just the depression talking?
