Who told you fandom is a female place? That's both patently untrue and silly.

(And what exactly about slash is "empowering" for women?)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
The writing-fanfiction-and-liking-slash part of fandom, at least, is predominantly female. And that's what a lot of people within that part of fandom (which p much includes f!s) mean when they say "fandom." So it's not a crazy thing to say.

I get you, anon, I really do. You're not alone.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It's supposed to be empowering to women? Really? How so? (not in a flippant way; I'm genuinely curious about this mindset)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-16 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
It gives women a place to explore their sexuality through male characters, because two men would be seen as equal to each other in society. It's kind of a fantasy about being equals in a relationship.

...Plus, women think men having sex is hot, but that's considered weird in society, unlike men who enjoy lesbian porn. Fandom gives women a place to get their kicks in an environment full of other women enjoying the same thing.

As someone with no personal interest in slash I've heard it said that it's empowering because it's putting male characters in the hands of women writers. Which...I kind of get?

But personally I think it's a way of slash writers who are otherwise a little embarrassed about what they do with their free time justifying their hobby by giving it a feminist angle. Which is sad for two reasons: a) people should be able to enjoy what they want without needing reasons for it, and b) female characters aren't exactly treated nicely in a lot of slash fandoms, which kind of deflates the whole feminist argument.

But like I said, I'm just an outsider looking in, so don't consider this any sort of expert opinion.

"Waaaah feminism ruins everything waaah why are women so mean to men"

Visit the Nifty gay story archive. You can see for yourself how gay men write porn, and realize you're not actually missing anything.

I am utterly baffled by the "fandom is a female space" notion.

But then, I am also utterly baffled by the notion that SFF is a boys' club.

the way fandom gets excited whenever someone identifies themselves as a gay or bisexual man, or a man who's interested in slash in general, says your secret is unpopular and inaccurate.

If you mean specifically within the "female dominated slash" fandom, I get the feeling you've already read some and been unable to tell the author was male. "Slash fandom" as a whole is so steeped in itself and each fandom's own tropes and cliches that all the fics end up sounding like each other.

If you mean you want more stories by gay guys who have never written or read "slash fandom" fic before and are just writing about dudes fucking and not aware of and have nothing to do with what you'd think of as "slash fandom," that's different. There's plenty of that.

I can't tell which you mean.

OP, I'm sure there's plenty gay dudes around that you don't realise are gay dudes :P .

In writing, I can only tell the difference in teenagers. Just read an excerpt from a lovely piece by one boy, it included "dick2dick" (yes, he wrote that!) and "luv rods". Seen girls writing about "wet caverns" and all that. I'm sure they mix, depending on how a person grows up, friends, family, what they read, so on.

At least in my experience. Unless you get an author with a particular style, the PWPs read much the same. Slash in general, though, can be waaaaay different between male/female authors.

You could just find a fandom where there are a ton of dude writers. Most (non-RPG) video games fit the bill.

There are quite a few male writers of slash - in fact, you've probably read quite a few fics that were written by guys and didn't realise it. I know I've been 100% convinced an author was a woman several times and been surprised when I read the author's note and realised that it was a guy. Which, you know, just goes to show that maybe the gender of the author doesn't actually matter that much. And that's the main issue I have with this secret.

In response to your S!b, um... I have literally never seen that opinion expressed, and I've been in fandom for about 15 years. I've seen people talk about why slash fandom is great for women because it is a female dominated space where women can feel comfortable expressing their sexuality - and I do think that it is an important and interesting cultural space for that reason - but I've never seen that extended to the exclusion of men from slash fandom. I've definitely seen vehement objection to outside analysis of slash fandom, but the thrust of that objection has been that fandom isn't a monolith of middle aged women, and has male and queer and younger and older voices. But idk. Maybe 'slash is empowering, fuck tha menz' is a new tumblr craze.

There's at least one gay male author in one if my fandoms, and another dude who does porny comics. This is based on what they've said, of course. In both cases, their porn isn't really different in any noticeable way. This is an anime fandom, so maybe that makes a difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's a gay guy in my fandom who writes ABO. :P Just goes to show men and women can both write weird porn.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-17 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
I bet "slash" is the metaphor for glazing opposite gender, hardcore style...

much like men...

I really don't think my writing style is that different...

Eh. I used to be in a fandom with a very prominent gay male writer who wrote slash fics. It wasn't that different.
