There's been a lot of discussion of how so many really popular and highly-praised fanfics are actually pretty crap or a lot of people on F!S don't like them or get the appeal.

How about the opposite: really popular fanfics that you actually do like, and which you think actually deserve all the praise and hits they get?

If there's any way to sort the Yuletide archive by kudos, that's where I'd look. (I recall a Calvin and Hobbes one that was awesome.)

Not OP, but perhaps people should specify the fandoms in the subject title, since this thread could get long.

I figured I'd approach this formally: which of the stories I've faved has the highest upvotes?

Xenophilia: 5407 upvotes.

Okay, there's no way I'm going to argue with folks who would be appalled by the premise. Let's try that again.

Project Sunflower: 2890 upvotes.

Project Sunflower is a bit of a switcheroo. The premise is about the first contact between two very different societies, at a point in time when one desperately needs the other's help in order to survive. The story itself is about the ups and downs of making new friends in a culture you're unfamiliar with. There's a fair bit of conflict and heroism, but it's almost a slice-of-life story in practice, with the real focus on light humor and fluffy moments. It's cute, it's harmless, and you'll probably like it even if you're not familiar with MLP.
