Clearly the series means a lot to her and it likely to be the biggest success of her career, which makes it doubly difficult to let go of... but I agree with you 100%.

I always sort of interpreted it differently. It seems she wants to just write more, bu her other stuff isn't taking off, and she's forever associated with HP...so she just ends up writing for it.

Eh. I have no problems ignoring any bits of it I dislike, so the positives far outweigh the negatives for me.

Exactly. I know it's her universe so what she says should be law; but, imo, if it's not in the books, it's not canon. Anything that's only in interviews, etc, I decide what I do and don't like.

It's kinda annoying me too, mostly cuz I keep accidentally running across things on Twitter and stuff. Like the most recent thing about Umbridge. I just wanna keep my middle-school memories the way they are.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Sentiment like this always feels so whiny to me.

People write fanfic to ignore canon, anyway, so let her give more information. There's plenty of people who want to know more about her actual story.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed

You can always choose to ignore stuff like this (though in some cases IDK why you would. IMO all the stuff on Umbridge didn't feel like anything shocking or new. It really fit what we had already been given on her).

Also some of it is just basically background on what inspired the character which...seems like a legit thing to talk about so long as you don't name specific people in spite.

I actually like this system of putting the worldbuilding details out there for the people who are interested in a separate place instead of bogging down the narrative with everything. Seems like a fair way to let the people who want more details have them while not annoying the people who don't. But I guess some people are still annoyed because they're not easy enough to avoid.

I think any Lord of the Rings can do with its own Silmarillion. It gives the world more character.

I have mixed feelings on this. Because on the one hand, I don't want to know every detail on every character's life. On the other hand, I like the extra worldbuilding. So mostly I take the perspective that only the books are canon, but the details are fun and there are plenty of people who like them so she should just do what she wants with her own creation.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
The series has a zillion fans, many of whom wish the series would never end. If you're not one of them then ignore the new information. It's not that hard.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
But the fans were crying out for more information, weren't they? There was a lot of information hinted at in the books and by JKR that has never been released and that people want to know, so why not share it? It might contradict some fanon and some people's head canons but on the other hand, people want to know what the "truth" is.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Most of it is trivia for the fans, who mostly seem to lap it up. There are worse forms of fanservice. And keeping up a level of fan interest is clearly in her best interest too, since it provides her with a reliable income stream (yeah, she probably doesn't need it now, but she has been very poor indeed and one of the survival strategies of people who are poor is that you never let go of an income stream because you know how fleeting wealth can be).

Plus she wants to get excitement up for the next part of the franchise with the new trilogy.

I love additional content.

I love the idea that characters, even ones you see only briefly, or only a single side of, have been planned out behind the scenes as actual people with their own agendas, histories, feelings, lives and motives. It's nice to see why they act the way they do and that they're not just put in there as a cardboard plot-carrier.

If you don't like the additional content, you're free not to read it.

This is odd to me, because years ago she was talking about publishing an encyclopedia with a bunch of new information, and everyone was wild about the idea. That's basically what she's doing with Pottermore, and now people are upset about it?

I don't understand why people who aren't interested in the extra stuff just...don't read it. I love HP, but I haven't read or done anything of the extra stuff because it doesn't interest me. Why's it so hard for other people to take that approach?

I can't really blame her, myself. I always see a lot of people who write original stuff talk about how they have all this worldbuilding and character backstory that they've thought up but couldn't fit in the actual story because it would clutter everything up. So if that story gets popular like HP did, it seems like it would be natural to want to take that opportunity to write out all the stuff you had to keep in your head before and share it with people who loved your original canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
eh, i feel as if it's her universe and she can do what she wants. that said, that last book was so shitty that i've lost complete interest in the series and any extra content that has come of it. but whatever, let people who still love the series and want extras get extras. we don't have to read them. *kanye shrug*

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
I really wish she wouldn't! I wish she'd post more. I love it all, it makes the world richer and more interesting every time.

People who are so absorbed in their own head-canons that they resent the original creator for disturbing them need to get over themselves.

It's her creation so she has the right to do what she wants with it, although I agree with your sentiment OP. I don't like when content keeps adding onto an already finished series.

Sometimes after I finish a something and I think it was perfect and then more info gets released and it kinda kills the happy ending. The only time I'd want additional information is if I wasn't satisfied with something.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-06 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't understand this. How is her additional stuff any more important than the books? Do you honestly include everything in the books in your canon, or do you forget or ignore bits and pieces? Why can't you do this for the expanded stuff?
