2. I adore Apollo. I just wish the Japanese fandom did. (At least me and 2ch agree on Trucy, though~)

[identity profile] aprilechidna5.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Does Japanese fandom not like him? o_o I wonder why the divide between the two?

43. Dead Like Me, yeah~! I don't really have much more to add, but DLM fans unite :D Horray!

49. 8-Bit Theatre secret dude dude dude! <3 <3 <3 Fighter's like the epitomy of adorkable and Black Mage is hilariously awesome (so is everyone, really). I had no idea anybody shipped them, but I guess that's because I never looked XD Is there actually fanfic/fanart for 8BT out there?

Too Big: Aww, what, I didn't know Nao got so much hate :c I mean, she rocks the house, what's not to love?

1. ME TOO.
15. OMG ESCAFLOWNE fucked me over hard. I HATE YOU ESCAFLOWNE I CRIED TOO MANY TEARS FOR YOU. NEVER AGAIN.
25. I loved the Aladdin and Little Mermaid sequels. I don't know how I feel about Little Mermaid 3 though...
33. I LOVE THIS SECRET because Iroh is a pimp and I have a sneaking suspicion that he totally went to visit her on his way out of the Fire Nation.
36. Thanks for keeping the (incorrect) stereotypical generalization alive that eating disorders are completely about vanity and outward appearances. Yeah, they have nothing to do with control issues, depression, coping with negative emotions, and (in some cases) sexual/verbal/physical abuse. As someone trying to recover from an eating disorder, you fail.
41. wow fugly secret Y/Y?

My eating disorder is deeper than your eating disorder!

Seriously, can we not play the My Problem is More Valid Than Yours!Internet edition? Because unless I'm misunderstanding you, that's what I'm reading. Yeah, eating disorders are complicated and stereotyping them is bad. But. Calling someone out because you don't think their "reason" (sorry, not a very good word choice) was good enough? Not cool.

I mostly agree. From what I've heard, Japan, as a whole, is far too conservative for me. Just because they are open-minded with anime/manga, does not mean that they are like that in real life. Also, "otaku" carries a terrible stigma, thanks to The Otaku Killer. Not that I am an otaku, but I think I would be afraid of being seen as one.

I suppose if you're not big into anime and have spent a good while learning about and understanding Japanese culture/cutoms/traditions, then it's not that bad.

But I don't think I'd want to live there permanently, regardless.

See, I think of it as the other way around. I always curse HITOMI because she was the one who decided she would rather go home and face her best friend and the other guy hooking up than spend the rest of her life with the person who loved her most. Although I'm pissed off he didn't try to stop her either! They loved each other so much, and it was so anticlimactic! They didn't even kiss!

I loved this series and all the characters, but...
Fuck you, Escaflowne. Fuck you.

I just picked Van to blame because I'm still mad at him for killing some of my homeskillets.

3. Tingle and... Ganon? ... oh crap this secret is going to make me want to go look for it!

12. Canon. Also, when I was in high school, we did a production of Godspell; our Jesus and Judas were real-life best friends, and unquestionably straight, but I slashed them too. [They will never know].

17. I didn't read that until a couple years ago, and I only picked it up because it was a hardback for less than ten bucks. Instead of thinking less of them, why not go buy an extra paperback copy and lend it to people? [or, on the internet, harass them with quotes about Crowley's plants]

29. Me too. I'm going to take Ballet 1 as soon as it's open.

34. Colbert / Stewart?

43. OMFG DEAD LIKE ME!
*pause* Yeah, I can totally see that. Just so long as no one's trying to do DLM/Princess Bride crossovers to lower the age gap or anything.

No one was a "self-proclaimed BNF." One of those authors made a couple of tongue-in-cheek references to it that were directly related to that wank, but it was said by other people first.

You might want to do your research and read those girls' journals to get some context instead of jumping on the hatewagon like the people who got lured in by those art posts did. It would totally make you a better person than the people who wanked on the poor things and the people who blindly agreed with the wankers. That seems to be what you want anyway.

Also, that's probably not a good reason to be in a fandom, now that I'm thinking about it. You should maybe do it because you like it instead of trying to crush people with your self-righteous indignation.

Re: 45

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
The "poor things"? I'm sorry, but no. I'm not in the fandom, but I got as close to firsthand experience territory as I could in that mess - i.e, hearing straight from the people being made fun of - and I could discern no tongue-in-cheek element at all amidst the meanness. I don't know if they're actually BNFs or not, but that was still shitty.

Not Anon.

047. LOL at all the people jumping to the defense.

"AMERICA IZ BAD 2!1!one!"

Did anyone say it isn't? Fandom seriously has this idea that Japan is super awesome and accepting.

  • Japan is known for using abortion as a birth control method. Actual birth control pills are not covered under insurance there, are incredibly expensive, and overall difficult to obtain. And Japanese dudes are culturally inclined not to wrap it up.

  • Japan is 98-99% homogeneous, and incredibly xenophobic. Have fun being the gaijin!

  • There is a an old proverb in Japanese culture: "If a nail sticks up, beat it back down." THIS IS BASICALLY THE PRINCIPLE UPON WHICH MODERN JAPANESE CULTURE IS BUILT. All those school uniforms that weeaboos so idolise? Are in place for a reason -- to get rid of individuality! My Japanese teacher once told the story of two girls who were expelled from school for dying their hair brown. All those neat lolitas and Harajuku girls are either wearing wigs, or dropped out of school and flip burgers at 'Makudonadosu'.

  • Young married women in Japan are expected to quit their job when that ring hits their finger. And they're expected to be knocked up within the year.

  • "The idea that same-sex attraction necessarily involves some kind of transgenderism or desire to be like or even become the opposite of one's biological sex is constantly reinforced by Japanese media which discuss homosexuality and transgenderism in the same context".(1) There's not really such a thing as two men loving each other in mainstream Japan -- one has to be the woman. Or maybe this just explains why yaoi fanbrats are so into crying men.

I could honestly go on and on and on. Are there fucked up things in other countries too? Yeah. Is it totally wrong that the OP brought up the bombs? Yeah. But Japan isn't some Garden of Eden or Shangri-La. Let it go.

[identity profile] charliequinn.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
No, Japan isn't perfect. Neither is my country, or your country.

However, as much as Japan has a bad reputation for being racist and xenophobic, America does as well (for your points, I could make the argument that American soldiers are killing thousands of Iraqui civillians for oil). And this person's secret (switch Japan for any country of your choice) compounds that, which is most likely why people are 'jumping to defence'.

*big hugs to you* Your secret made me smile, not because I enjoy seeing secrets filled with rage, but because damned if every single ex-pat I know hasn't felt the same way at some point. The xenophobia and misogyny are what gets to me the most- for those who say "OMG, AMERICA IS THE SAME", trust me, it's not. Japan is like living in 1950s America, but with more cultually accepted racisim (Japan is still in the "racism makes for great tv comedy!" phase of entertainment development). It's got to be doubly hard if it gets out that you're a geek- Japan is not kind to the different.

Still, I can't hate it. I actually love the fact that women here are free to be as girly as they like (though I understand it comes at the awful price of not really being allowed to be anything else, which bites). I like that it's safe, and that people are societally concious- I once left my purse on a bench in a city subway station, and nothing was taken. I love that the Japanese don't bitch and whine and sue when things are hard or stupid can't-be'helped stuff happens.

I don't think I'm going to live here forever- I know I'll never be fully accepted by society. But I'm going to enjoy it for now (even though yes, I do still have my "oh my god, this is a failed experiment in humanity, bring on the bombs D:" days.

8. Hey, don't worry about that! I've been participating in Yuletide every year since it started in 2003, and every time until this year (and I was so amazed when I never saw my request come up on the pinch-hitters list this time!) the person I was assigned to defaulted. And was always tempting to mope about whether the pairings I like are really out there without my realizing it, or if I hadn't made it clear enough in my Santa letter that I'm totally fine with gen for any of the characters I requested if they couldn't write a pairing I wanted, or something else like that.

But the pinch hitters are awesome, and there are any number of reasons why your writer would have dropped out that have nothing to do with you, ranging from them managing their time wrong so they never got around to finishing before the deadline, to realizing that they weren't as comfortable with the source material as they thought they were and not wanting to give you a story by somebody fumbling to remember character details, to having actual serious issues come up in their lives that wouldn't let them get to a keyboard.

So, basically, this is a very long way of saying that I hope you don't let this sour your view of Yuletide, because, even as a Yuletide-jinx, it's always been one of my favorite parts of the holiday season and I hope that you'll end up feeling the same way.

#8 OP

(Anonymous) 2007-12-23 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, I won't sour about it ^^ It was kind of the first time shock, and a bit of paranoia from my part, but I do try to tell myself there's a big chance it's not my requests' fault. This is why I keep it a secret, as normal as it is to feel that way, because I know that part of me is being silly and pessimistic.

And like I told another person, my pinch hitter wrote something for me already, if my absence at the treats page is an indicative.

45. Everytime I see secrets or comments about how the D.Gray fandom has gone to pot, I feel sad that I dropped out. I've never been part of a wanky fandom before (not seriously, at least) and I still have that collection of Tikki stories to finish.
