I started to agree with you, despite that I'm going to Japan in 4 months and TOTALLY looking forward to it. Indeed, Japan is not the ideal image most fans seem to think it is. I would almost NEVER want to live there. I'm trying very hard to learn as much of the language as I can simply so I won't have difficulties being looked down on for not fitting in, and this bothers me. (but at the same time, I want to for different reasons- I can't stand people who think it's ok to go to a country and not TRY to speak the native language. Thats another rant outside of fandom though.) I hate the way they have gender stereotypes. I hate the totem pole of hierarchy in schools and culture.

But I also love the food, the art, and the music. I love the history of the martial art, the ceremony of serving tea, and the patience and serenity that goes into so much of their atmosphere when one has the time to strip away the insane workaholic side of Japanese culture.

There are sides to Japan that I love and that I hate. Just like many places, people, and things in this world.

The problem though is that I disagreed with you the MOMENT you started being hateful. That's seriously some shameful shit right there, man. Yes, you are being racist. I can't look down on you for hating the behavior, because I hate it too. But look around you at the world. Every country- EVERY COUNTRY- has these kinds of problems on some level.

You shouldn't judge a people by their masses. You should judge each person by them self. And you are the perfect example of why. I surely hope that the Japanese (or any other nationality for that matter) don't generalize all of us Americans as haters, or otaku, or racists, or any other generalization you can come up with.

Have a little perspective, it might help you feel a little better.

Oh, and the bit about the atom bomb? Really did discredit any opinion you hold, in my eyes. Talk about pot and kettle.

15. Escaflowne will be my favorite series forever and ever and ever. ♥ I was so sad when I watched the ending. ;A; I'm actually still secretly hoping for a sequel where they get to meet each other again. That would be so awesome.

[identity profile] thano.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
17. Good book! Although, you know, some people are just slow readers. 8D I'd advise you to be patient. Fangirl/boy later~

32. ... I felt something fluttering in my 11 year old heart at that scene. 8D I wonder if I'm in the same handbasket as you. I just chalked it up to suspense at the time.

33. ... b'aaaaaaaw cute pairing. Too May/September for me, though. =/

47. ... My long-ass rant of rantiness was lost to my laptop's crappy battery, but now that I look back on it, it might have been for the better. Let's see if I can phrase this more tactfully the second time around.

I wonder why anyone goes to a foreign country expecting, well, anything. I know I have preconceptions of Malaysia, Australia, Germany, despite having never been to such places, but I know I'll never know everything about them unless I've actually been there. I'd never take a television show or even firsthand accounts over an actual experience, because the image of reality that that source presents is not the same as mine, and even then, I know my perception is flawed by what I don't know. So when someone describes another country as some sort of Shangri-La, I seriously am doubtful until I go there myself. From what I've personally experienced, most modern countries are very much the same from a cultural viewpoint.

I mean, think about it. Besides nerd and/or geek culture, how much about other American cultures do you know? Let's start with nerd and geek subculture, even: I know I know an amazing amount about anime and manga, a good amount about video games, a fairly decent amount about traditional American pulp fantasy, and a healthy amount about pop music in general. After that? Not much. You could throw a grue at me and I wouldn't know what the fuck hit me. Cthulhu? Huh? And why do some people side so fiercely with DC and/or Marvel? How the hell should I know? Now let's expand that a little more: I know a good amount about rich white kid and middle-class American-Asian workaholic culture, but I have no idea what the latest ghetto trend is, or what's happening to the rich and the famous of Hollywood or Broadway, just because I'm American. Considering how poorly our (nerd) culture is represented on TV, I'm surprised that anyone would consider a TV show an accurate barometer of any given culture of any modern culture of the world. No matter how culturally homogeneous Japan may or may not be, a few television shows could never hope to even begin to describe entire cultures, much less the people who you meet, whether they be truly racist, chauvinistic, sheltered, or scared. Actually, scared might be a good word for what they might be feeling right now: the Japanese place so much value on being the same as anyone that any change might rock their world so hard that they react as though they hate you... which they might, unless someone joins in and makes it okay because they aren't alone. That's why it might seem like they're resistant to change because they hold too stubbornly to their traditions -- it's because that's exactly the case, and they have to be spoonfed any radical idea, or else they react horribly and violently.

You're a fool for expecting too much out of Japan, and doubly for not being able to keep an open mind in a country of minds that are closed. Is it that hard to be understanding? What, are you somehow so much better than the average Japanese person that you can't even afford to give them a little empathy? Would it be better if the world catered to your every need? Are you too wussy to stay with people who are *gasp* racist, or *shock!* chauvinistic, or *dramaz!* close-minded? Newsflash: hermitage might be a good option for you, because some of the most progressive people I know are also close-minded, or racist.

Teal deer, there is no heaven on earth, so suck it or gtfo.

...

Wow, I'm going to regret this, aren't I?

15. I felt cheated when I first watched it too :( But now? I'm kind of glad they didn't get the hackneyed old live-happily-ever-after ending.

16. I could try! But I suck at drawing.

15. Watch Nescaflowne. Seriously, it might be a spoof but the ending is so much better.
16. Not just Fei Hua, I would kill for some good Hoshi No Yakata fanart. They're all so damned hot.
17. I remedy this situation by immediately insisting that they read it. It's one of my favorite books ever.

IAWTC. Except for The Little Mermaid part. No offense, but I thought the sequel was terrible. Right on about the Aladdin and PotC sequels though. I watched the third Aladdin more when I was little than the original. ;)

12. Ever read the Gospel of Judas? Talk about your subtext. But, really, if you're going with the canonical gospels, there's really more support for Jesus/Beloved Disciple. I'm just sayin'.

[identity profile] ashishishe.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
3. Goddamn that picture is hot.

5. I think the original character designs are much better. The pics you provided look so... generic. :/

6. Oh yes. Whoever drew that deserves a medal.

12. Ha, I already do! Especially the Gnostic Judas, who knew he had to betray Jesus in order for him to die on the cross.

27. I've never understood why someone would want to be a BNF. Wow, a bunch of fanbrats know who you are? Whoop-dee-do.

5

[identity profile] themerrier.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
I prefer the original designs too. But for some reason I'm drawn to this particular one.

15. AFUCKINGREED. I love that series, and it still absolutely breaks my heart that they couldn't be together in the series OR the movie. I mean...WHY!? WHY COULDN'T SHE HAVE STAYED D: I mean, he couldn't go to Japan 'cuz he's king and has responsibilities, but WHY DID SHE HAVE TO GO BACK D: WHY COULDN'T IT HAVE WORKED OUT. WRRRYYYYYYYYY.

17. Um. While I'm right with you on adoring that book, I think it's pretty poor thing to judge people off of. If they read and didn't like the book, I could understand (though not agree with) your discrimination, but. Geez, dude :[

25. I...CAN'T watch the sequels. I saw the Aladdin ones because they were some of the first and I was still a kid when they were out. The King of Thieves one used to make me cry 'cuz I have daddy issues :[ But I tried watching them now that I'm older and they just...make me cringe in horror. I feel bad for the people who actually had to work on those...

30. Agreed. :[ I'm a reedonk stickler for canon, and I wish for my tragic OTPs to have happiness. ...Except Sasuke/Naruto. Reasons are TL;DR so I'll save it xD;

31. ...Uh. Wow. Smurf porn. Not something I wanted to imagine in my lifetime, but okay.

41. I dunno how anyone could ship that 'cuz it's kinda...gross and childhood-corrupting, but. Each to their own, right? ;;;

47. I'm sorry that visiting Japan has made you disgustingly jaded or whatever, and I can't make a good argument since I haven't actually BEEN there, but. I've been out of anime for years, and though I know how flawed a culture it is, I still study the language because I love it :[ Also, there are beautiful aspects to the culture.
You can't exactly call Western culture stellar...

8. Don't feel bad. Someone picked up your request so it obviously couldn't have been that difficult. If the person did default for not liking your request, they should have not signed up for that fandom/characters in the first place.

47. Then leave; most parents are understandable when their kids have to come crawling back to them for a while when they've made a stupid life choice. Moving to a country for fandoms is always a bad idea, whether to Japan for anime/manga reasons or to England to search for the Doctor and the TARDIS.

Let me guess, you moved there, figuring everything was going to be like your favourite anime/manga and then when you found out it wasn't you started hating it. I say this because the things you listed as the things you 'hate' (the food, the language, their treatment of women, the modern culture, the drinking, how they treat nerds) are things you should have been aware of before even moving there.

[identity profile] queenie-z.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
21) ARE YOU ME!? When you find your Lloyd can we share him plz? :|b

47) In after "every country has sucky points, get over it" etc. etc.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-23 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Overreaction much? Don't get me wrong, I'm not too fond of "wapanese fanbrats" who worship Japan either, but it sounds like you have serious issues. It was your mistake to have gone to Japan, thinking everything would be total otaku acceptance. You were probably some nerd who thought you could snag a totally kakkoii Japanese boyfriend or kawaii girlfriend while you were there, and miserably failed.

As for mistreating their women? Erm, care to elaborate? I think women mistreat guys a lot there too. I know of girls who like using old guys to buy all sorts of expensive brand name shit for them, and they just dump them when the money's not there anymore. I really don't know what you're talking about here. When I lived in Japan, my dad was the man of the house and he liked being in charge. But my mother and I never felt oppressed by him, or any men. We weren't abused either.

People think you're a pedophile in Japan? Well, if you told anyone in any country you liked looking at pictures of really young children, they'd think you were a pedophile too.

I moved to America with my family about 11 years ago. I was immediately faced with racism. You know, "chink" and "ching chong" and all of that. Our house was vandalized and broken into a couple of times, despite being in a nice area. I thought the food in America was terrible, too salty or too sweet. I didn't care for the TV, music, schools, or people for the first five years. I thought the education system was horrid, and couldn't understand the stupidity of some people. But I got over it. I don't hate America or Americans. I don't wish for America to be nuked and destroyed. I don't make negative generalizations about America. I don't hate Japanese girls who want to go to America for Avril Lavigne and Disney.

Japan's xenophobic and treats any non-Japanese as a second class citizen. It has an ugly, war-driven past. I agree it isn't "the best country in the worldZOMG!!!", but if you hate it so much, then leave. Once again, I think the problem lies within yourself.

Re: 47.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-23 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
