What you've got there is culture shock, specifically, the "I hate EVERYONE EVER and wish this country would fall off the face of the Earth" kind of culture shock. I've had that. It really sucks. It's generally wise to spend these phases drinking, or hunched over a cybercafe terminal, or freaking out your host family by bursting into tears every time Bruce Springsteen comes on the radio.

It's generally unwise to post genocidal screeds on the internet. Also, try to avoid throwing rocks at small children, or, after drinking, telling your neighbors how much better your country is. You might think at the time that they would benefit from some constructive criticism, but this is not a correct perception.

I would totally judge you for posting genocidal screeds because you expected the entire country to be as cute and neat as a tv show - oh wait, I am judging you - but I've also had friends from overseas burst into tears and say "This country is way shittier than it looks on Friends." So while it's kind of fail, it's apparently a common variety thereof.

11. I look at him, and ALL I can see think is "EXCELLENNNNNT!" or think about Don John. Because I am a big fat dork, and not just a sci fi dork neither. Oh boy. So no, you're not alone.

12. eheheheh. Bible shipping. ahaha. That book is full of smut anyways, so a little slash isn't too out of place, really. (Honestly. Read the Old Testament sometimes.)

17. GENIUS BOOK. This is just the truth. No two ways about it.

29. heh. Me too. Cuz tutu is just amazing.

44. High and Mighty Color? ahahahaaha i love you.

Those are the only movies I've EVER liked him in.

Well, that and 'The Gift' where he's an over-the-top wife-beating redneck. But nobody saw that one. (Cate Blanchett is a spaced-out swamp witch.)

47. I can't say I agree with the majority of your secret (I think it's entirely possible to enjoy JP lit/video games even if you hate the country of origin), but I am a bit opposed to the idea, just in general, of Japan. Admittedly, I do toggle hate and pity because modern Japanese society tends to trigger the latter moreso than the former, but for the most part, Japan makes me sick to my stomach. (It's a case of pot calling the kettle black for the most part, as I am Chinese, but hey! We are all allowed our biases.)

Also, I'm surprised that the preconceptions you had after watching anime/manga were good. There is no such thing as individuality (as far as outward appearances go, at any rate) in Japan - surely you must have picked that up from all the generic schoolboy/girl anime. The character types in anime and manga are so prevalent and so standard across genres that it's not really surprising that that's the reality in Japan.

Wow. I hope you never come to my country.

You're the kind of person that gives Americans such a bad reputation, I hope you realise that.

Yay, double dose of Pratchett lovin'.

17--Don't ever let 'em make you feel guilty about this. I have a long list of books that make me think less of people if they haven't read them. Some of them I haven't read, and I think less of myself for it too. I try to be fair in my freely admitted elitist snobbery.

26 - Me too. Even though there's nothing really there to hit, if you take my meaning.

4) Uuuh is that Hugh Jackman? It looks like it but I might be blind. Maybe I'm just desperate but if Hugh Jackman DID a Jane Austin movie... DDDD:

Also, is this another version of Pride and Prejudice because I don't know of a modern adaptation of the books save for the "Colin Firth" version and the new one with that Keira Nightly Pirates of the Caribbean chick. D: Now I'm rather curious.

47) dfasdfafda That's why you learn about a country more before you move it it? Like uh wow. I adore the language and I want to translate to it but I'm still unsure if I want to live there--visit, sure, but their culture is so different from the one I grew up in I need to be sure I'm accepting of it before I move there.

I wish people who move to Japan learned more about it than what they got out of "anime"--anime is certainly not enough to learn about a whole society's culture. Same goes for when you're deciding to move to a different country in general: Harry Potter does not equal England, kthxbai.

LOLZ I think this is, like, my third time posting here ever. XD;;

[identity profile] slylilgoblin.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
ahaha, no, it's Richard Armitage. And it's an adaptation of the book North and South, which is sort of like Pride and Prejudice in that it's a love story, but totally different in that it's set in the Victorian Era and the industrial revolution, there're mills and unions, and all sorts of fun stuff. Less teas and walks and balls, and more riots and strikes and fun stuff like that. I highly highly recommend it, because it has taken over my brain it is so good.

Have you seen Kate and Leopold? *drool* Hugh Jackman in period clothes.... *droooooooooool*

You know, you are right that it's hard to be a foreigner in Japan, and it's silly to think any place on earth is some kind of utopia. As for Japan, the likelihood is that people will treat you really badly at times, and depending on how conservative the region you're in is, that can be a lot of times. I've had some really upsetting experiences in Japan, and I've also had to deal with the culture shock. The thing is, if you really hate it that much, just go home.

More importantly, rather than sitting around being an emo-baby, why not try to DO something about what you're experiencing? Take it home with you, and instead of whining about how everyone is mean to you and doesn't accept you, look for those problems in your own culture where you have a chance of actually fixing it. It might seem strange to think of that kind of experience as a gift, but now you know how many people in the minority all over the world feel, and that is valuable, because now you know why those things need to change. So, get over the suckiness of culture shock in a xenophobic nation, learn from it, and use it to make a difference.

Also, even joking about dropping atomic bombs ANYWHERE is really sick.

1. I think that's kind of cute.

5. Huh. I don't watch either of those series, but the original art styles catch my eye more than their pretty bishoujo versions. They're just more interesting to took at.

10. Aww... *hugs*

16. I honestly thought that was Cound D when I first saw that picture. Needless to say, for a couple of seconds I was more than a little confused XD.

17. One of my absolute favorite books ever. I recommend it every opportunity I get. I have yet to meet a displeased reader <3

29. IAWTS x 100. It helped me rekindle my love and interest in dance in general, but ballet specifically. So much love for that series.

That's understandable! I actually had never thought of Count D since Fei Hua's more outwardly cruel and seems much more effeminate. Plus, the body suits seem to stick in my memory than the Asian clothing, although he does resemble Count D more with the latter. XD;

48. I'd totally play that MMORPG too. I'm embarassed about my love and enjoyment of the show in general, to be frank. My current friends would probably laugh me off of the internet if they knew.

[identity profile] comic-heroine.livejournal.com 2007-12-23 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
47. Thank you. I actually like the language and don't at the same time because of the challenge. But no, I can't stand the racisim in Japan, the sexist attitudes, attitudes towards religons not their own, ect ect the whole superior bad attitude in general. But don't get me wrong, I've met real great people too from there. One of which is a friend's friend actually from there, whom has a large distaste for the exchange students who come to the US on their parents' dollar.

It's a mixed bag, most definitely. But I am thankful to know I'm not the only one who doesn't see Japan on a pedistal like some others. A LOT of countries have perverted views on things. Some agree with them more than others.

Which En-ju doujinshi is that picture of Hinata from and more importantly, WHERE CAN I FIND IT? *likes en-ju's stuff*

Though, while I do like En-ju's portrayal of Hinata a lot, I still think her true character design is less hackneyed and more interesting than En-ju's more shoujo-fied version. But that's what doujinshi artists are for, after all. :D

Wow, don't you think you're going a little over the top? Sorry that your experience sucked, but saying something like wishing the whole country didn't exist-- kinda comes off as something that could now turn into racism, which sucks.

Not jealous of you, but still wanna go badly :D
