...you respect him because some psychotic children claimed that he wanted them to stab someone? what

I think they mean a respect for how creepy the character can be. But maybe not.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it does make it a bit scarier

The thing is that many (if not most) people who have heard of Slenderman don't know that he was created on a forum. It is a convincing monster that ticks off a lot of common scary things (blank face, unnatural limbs, harmful to children, unrelentingly chases you, etc).

And 2009 is a long time ago in the world of the internet. Hell, a town was terrified because of a creepypasta on reddit recently. And those were people who were reading a story as it was written.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Which creepypasta are you referring to?

Really? I've never met anyone who didn't think of Slenderman as 'another internet thing.'

Ok, sorry if this is off-topic, but am I the only one who feels like time is actually faster on the internet? Like, I'll remember some silly meme or fandom things from forever ago, and think "It's really that old? It still feels recent to me."

I agree. It's always seemed strange to me that people can be so frightened of it when it's just some thing that a dude on a forum made up. I mean, I get creepypasta and horror stories, but people seem to take it further than that and it's always seemed weird. But then the stabbing comes along and it just takes the whole thing to a level that actually is bizarre and kind of frightening - much more so than the original story ever was.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Turn out 12 year-olds are scarier than most stories you can come up with.

I'm only half-joking. It's kinda scary how intensely some children can convince themselves of things.

I feel kind of sorry for the people who created Slenderman. It must suck knowing that some creepy-ass children used your creation as an excuse to almost kill someone

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They literally used that plot on Criminal Minds the other week. Some kid invents a creepypasta story and one of his idiot friends uses the meme as an excuse to murder a bunch of cool/popular kids.

I'm still convinced that's just what they/their lawyer cooked up in order to have a shot at some sort of diminished capacity leniency.

That's not outside the realm of possibility, but some kids are fucking psychos. Some of the little bastards really are so deranged that they believe a fictional character wants their loyalty.

I believe that the kids probably got obsessed with Slenderman and used it to trick the other girl.

But if it wasn't Slenderman it would have been something else.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, it's extra creepy. These girls appear to have been part of the creepypasta fangirl community, where pubescent girls do with creepypasta... well, what pubescent girls do with EVERYTHING. Bad bishie fanart of "Slendy" and Jeff The Killer, woobification of the evil, constant shipping, and endless, endless, unoriginal self-insert OCs.

Problem is, a lot of these OCs develop their own followings, and almost all of them are about "proxies", who all have the same backstory. A fucked-up, alienated kid, usually with the standard Mary Sue tragic abusive backstory cranked up to 11, finally snaps and kills someone or a bunch of someones, usually in a bully-revenge fantasy. And Slenderman is just soooooo impressed with this plucky youngster that he makes them an official proxy and gives them a cool name and superpowers and then they can kill whoever they want and hang out with Slenderman and et cetera et cetera.

And as usual, some kids fuck up that line between fantasy and reality, like with pages like this: http://www.quotev.com/quiz/3014342/Are-you-one-of-Slender-Mans-Proxies/

So yeah, those girls killed that other kid because they wanted to be terrible fanfic characters. Not even kidding.

You know, I haven't seen much Slenderman-related stuff since the attempted murder incident... or maybe the people I know/knew who were into that stuff moved on to, I dunno, Five Nights at Freddy's or something, idk.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Probably so, since I see FNaF stuff everywhere now. :/

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
All any myth needs is to be backed up with belief. When they're made doesn't matter. The internet is awesome because it makes group thoughtforms so much easier to create and maintain than ever before!

For me, I'm not sure what made up on the Internet has to do it with at all. I don't believe in any supernatural phenomenon or demons, etc, so bragging a long history doesn't make a monster more authentic to me.

It's like scary movies - of course they aren't real, but that doesn't make them not scary just because they aren't re-enactments of creepy folktales or something, right?

Slenderman is made up. I have zero expectation that he is going to lurk out of my closet and abduct me. But the concept is creepy and attractive in its creepiness, the old photos with Slenderman shopped in were visually effective and if I were walking through a dark forest at night after watching one of those Youtube Slenderman webseries (Marble Hornets, was that the famous one?) I might start getting scared.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, IIRC, there is actually something similar to Slenderman in Germanic folklore or something? It was discovered after the fact, tho.

Personally, I feel like those girls claimed Slenderman association because they either wanted to excuse what they did, or win internet points.

The meme has always been kind of boring and dumb to me,
and still is.
