Well, yeah. Bitter whiny fans come in all stripes and bearing all different opinions and preferences. That should be pretty obvious common sense. Not sure what you're trying to get at?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Both are completely true.

(Not really sure why this is a secret, tho).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
So very true.

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-11-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want my ships to become canon. What if I don't like their dynamic? And canon ships're so trivial.
If you do, bitterness's completely understandable.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Both feelings are understandable and normal.

It's how you (general you) handle them that's the issue. If someone's bitter as hell that their ship isn't canon, that's fine unless they're going around trashing other ships and other fans and stuff. That goes true with any opinion.

Reading secrets like this makes me realize I'll never really truly understand shipping wars, no matter how long I'm in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's more like we're pissed off that you slashers keep bashing the female halves of the canon het pairings to get rid of them so you can have your sausage fest. It's not that you're "more popular", it's that you're being sexist.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd believe that more if het shippers didn't fling sexist, misogynistic (and sometimes racist) shit at characters in the way of their pairings, too. Slashers seem worse because, in a lot of fandoms, there are more of them.

But het fans do this too. The hate that Zutara fans threw at Mai, for example, was just as bad (if not WORSE).

Also, preferring a slash pairing isn't sexism. And you can legitimately dislike a female character too the same way you would dislike a male character. That isn't sexism in and of itself.

Guess what? Sometimes that supposed "female character hate" comes about because we're unhappy with the way the female character was written in order to be shoved into a pairing. The real sexism comes from the canon writers who turned an otherwise-interesting female character into a token love interest.

That is not something unique to slash shippers. Het shippers also hate on other female characters that get in the way of their ship.

I've been in various femslash, slash, and het shipping fandoms and misogyny and character bashing are looked down on by the majority of people. It is seldom ever encouraged.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-30 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
This happens all the time in all fandoms.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I definitely am bitter that my favorite gay ships won't ever have a chance of becoming canon solely because they are gay, and shows just don't go canon gay unless the characters are previously established to be gay (in which case they neatly fit with the other established gay character). Being gay myself, I don't see why I'm supposed to be ashamed of being such an immature fangirl or whatever. It sucks knowing that none of them will ever even consider going that way.

I do feel like for a lot of het fans, it's not good enough that their pairings are canon (or at least have a chance), they also have to be snide to us oh so delusional fangirls who are too dumb to know it'll never be canon. Yes, I know it's not going to be canon, so what if I dare to say I want it to be?

(Anonymous) 2014-12-01 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say "a lot" of het fans, but yeah, some for sure.

they also have to be snide to us oh so delusional fangirls who are too dumb to know it'll never be canon.

That shit is always so irritating. I mean, okay, fine, maybe 1% of slashers seriously think the creators are secretly involved in some big conspiracy to make a slash pairing canon, but 99% know it's non-canon and waiting for canon validation is not their reason for shipping it. The possibility of "endgame" validation is such a big pot-at-the-end-of-the-rainbow for ongoing het ships that it seems to screw with a lot of het fans' perspectives on shipping.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-01 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely. Most slash shippers at least seem to acknowledge that they will never get canon. I'm tired of hetero shippers with their thinly veiled homophobia shouting 'they're not gay!' at everything as if they are paranoid or something.

I don't care if it's slash or het, I ship whatever I find to have a good dynamic. Though it is kinda sad that if the slash ship has a good dynamic it has 0% chance of becoming canon. That's probably why these ships attract more fanwork, to fill in the void.

Heh. I'm bitter that my het ship will never be canon, that the slash ships are more popular, AND that there's tons more fic and fanworks for them than for my ship. I win! :p

Oh, without a doubt. Shipping breeds bitterness of all sorts.

I've been on both sides of this and it's so true.

Whenever I ship a slash pairing that has a great foundation I get frustrated that it will never be canon whereas hetero ships gets a free pass simply for being het.

Whenever I ship het I always want a bigger fandom with more fanwork. Sometimes slash pairings get super popular with zero basis and get massive fandoms and treat het ships like the plague.

It seems rare that somebody is completely satisfied with their ship. If you can get a good canon basis with a decent amount of fanwork and zero fandom drama, then you hit the jackpot.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-01 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I think many het fans don't care about ppl shipping other things (in general, but immature people are in every fandom) and if slash fans weren't constantly acting on their own bitterness and baiting het fans in nonsensical shipper wars, the latter wouldn't become bitter and have some kind of reaction. Some het canon ships are still popular so the second part is valid for the slash fans too: they wouldn't care about converting people to their shipper creed if the canon couple had no fans.

I have a friend who multiships and never gets shit from the het shippers when she reblogs the slash ship too, the only times she ever gets hate messages and unfollowers is when she reblogs the het ship and the slash fans act like she's doing something super bad (she tags everything so ppl could blacklist the ships they hate)

I love drinking in the tears of Destihellers who cry about their ship never becoming canon. Their hate towards Hannah (and I don't even ship Cas/Hannah) was so ridiculous.

You've invaded 99% of my actual OTP fics on AO3. You invade EVERYTHING. Why isn't that enough for you?

Off topic but...some of the comments remind me of Destihellers.
