41. I think disliking a female in fandom has become cliche at this point. So many are disliked for (what seems to be) the crime of having ovaries. From my own experiences, I do take OTT female hating as simply disliking the character for being female/getting in the way of OTP/being 'violent' (in anime/manga), rather than for legitimate reasons, until proven otherwise.

42. Why didn't you just try and get your boyfriend interested in fandom? Or, em, realise that you can have separate interests from your boyfriend? I mean, there's nothing wrong with finding different interests and moving on from fandom but you secret is coming off as a little smug. Perhaps that's not what you mean though.

24. I female AND male characters for their personality and characterization, not that feminine and manish traits. Integra was a bad choice to portray the mannish girl archetype, btw (Haruka, Oscar, etc, women who SEEK to be men are better choices), because she's not out to prove she's a man and crossdress, she happens to wear a suit and smokes. Woo. Like most of the cast does. If anything, Hellsing is genderblind and that's why is awesome.

I'm not in any anime fandoms anymore and maybe this is more of a real problem in anime, although I doubt it, but I'm addressing this as fandom as a whole:

24) I have never seen any feminist fans bash a character solely because she is feminine. Criticize stereotypes or dichotomies of females in fandoms, sure, but not hate a character just because she wears dresses, likes pink, etc. In fact, it's the feminist fans, including myself, who I see call others on their sexism when they call females "sluts" or such for daring to be "feminine" and/or be near a male.

Which connects to

41) Disliking a character for legitimate reasons does not make anyone sexist.

But female characters are often hated not for legitimate reasons but solely for being female. I have seen so many women bashed and called names just for having regular flaws, wearing the wrong clothing, and so on. They are called sluts and bitches just because they sometimes talk to a male character. They are called whores if they aren't "pure" or have only one love interest. They are often held to standards that male characters are not.

(Male characters getting occasionally criticized for being "weak" is stupid, but it does not negate this because that still plays into sexist ideals of weak=feminine/feminine=weak.)

That is hateful and sexist.

But I hate even more that all that unbridled misogynistic hate of female characters that are the love interests of the hot male characters just because they are there and are female is grounded in the realities of many a possessive screaming fangirl.

10. I used to watch my dad play Link to the Past all the time when I was too young to play myself! And now that your secret brings it up, perhaps the early memories are partially why I became a huge Zelda fan, too? Gives me something to think about!

28. Yeah! I'm so used to the dub, it just wouldn't feel right to watch it in Japanese.

30. Is that Makoto from School Days? I watched the last episode a while back just to see if it was indeed one of those violent endings I heard about, and yeah, I felt a little bad, too, because nobody deserves that. Boy howdy did I think he was a jerkface, though, and I only saw that one episode!

37. You know, this kind of inspires me to try getting my license, too! I keep joking that my proficiency in Mario Kart might help me out somehow, though I'd bet if I get in the driver's seat, I'd be constantly checking in the rear-view mirror for oncoming blue shells.
