Yeah, I'm a wait for sales person. That is, when I'm not trying to get through my Steam and GoG backlog. (85 hours in Skyrim, still have not finished the main quest.)

That, and I still want a sense of how bad the last-act railroading is going to be once they publish all the DLC.

I didn't click with the universe it presented or the characters. I had a hard time continuing to explore so I gave up the two times I attempted a playthrough.

I like DA2! I prefer the fighting mechanics in it over Origins. Everyone seemed to be fighting in slow motion in the first game, it drove me nuts.

There's no Mac version of Inquisition and I'm not sure if there will be and my macbook is the only thing I can play on, so I'll sit here with fingers crossed!

I really disliked DA:O, too.

DA:I has a lot of elements in it that I suspect were put in to appease the crowd who think that DA2 was the worst game ever and DA:O was the best, but so far I find it to be a vast improvement on DA:O, if a step down in places from DA2.

It felt like Bioware got a bit miffed at all the folks who pointed out that their "moral choices" were just "help everybody" or "let everybody die," so they switched it around so the "help everybody" choice sometimes looked like it was going to be the "let everybody die" choice and vice versa. There still weren't many choices between conflicting moral values, just a few nasty gotchas for doing what looked like the right thing.

I love the heck out of DA2, so I was disappointed to see Inqusition go so far back towards Origins. Which I also really like but the actual combat mechanics in DA2 were so much more fun!

i didn't like origins that much either. i only played it through once and that was enough for me. i wiki'd the stuff i missed. i liked da2 much better. inquisition isn't really like either of the other two games though. maybe a tiny bit of both with the open-worldness of skyrim. da2 was very linear, which is not the case in inquis.

I couldn't finish Origins, I just didn't give a shit about any of the characters. I played DA2 first and not even pre-Justice Anders could get me to finish it.

Gameplay is secondary to story/characters for me, so the 'gameplay was better in Origins!' arguments don't resonate with me. DA2 just had so many more characters I liked and genuinely wanted to see. It was one of the first RPGs where I had more characters I wanted to bring along than I had party slots!

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I think DA:O is a brilliant game, but I agree, its main plot is pretty generic Tolkien-esque fantasy (though I think some of the subplots are more developed and interesting). DA2, while obviously being rushed, was much more original and unique in narrative, though I think the plot could've been worked with a bit to make it flow better (and there was no reason why the game had to span a decade, and certainly no in-game indication that time ever went by).

That being said, disagree totally about the characters. I'd agree Morrigan is terrible and unlikable (but a brilliant character nonetheless), but Alistair? Leliana? Don't get how they could merit hate, they are amazing.

As for morally gray decisions, I think there are some, and theoretically I want more but I actually get annoyed when there's not a "right" answer. I hated solving the dwarf quest, because one guy was obvious a psycho, but a better ruler, and the other was nice but a terrible ruler. But then again, choices like who to put on the throne are much more ambiguous, there's not really a good or evil option (unless you execute Alistair or something)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Morrigan (I agree that she's an amazing character and probably one of the best female characters in video games imo) but I've never hated a character more than I hated Leliana. Even Fenris was more tolerable - I've always been pro-mages.

Otherwise I agree with you.

I like Morrigan and Leliana but I see why they get hate. As for me, I hate Alistair, but then I also hate Garrus so I guess I'm doing this Bioware thing wrong. At least I had the option to kill them. Wish I can do the same with Sera.

I love Origins, but it isn't for everyone. What's enabled me to play it so many times is I genuinely like a lot of the story, characters and side-quests, even when the game gets frustrating. (The Fade, The Deep Roads, etc.) Plus, it has one of my favorite in-game romances ever, and I do love the level of customization tactics gives you. I liked the freedom of choice, and prefer the way BioWare went about it in Origins.

But I don't hate Dragon Age 2, they're just very different experiences. Inquisition is as well. IMO Inquisition has some fantastic main quests and writing (and one of the best casts, too), there just isn't enough of the quality stuff. Instead of what feels like a billion fetch quests, it would've been nice to have some meatier side-quests (or a longer main questline). I actually loved most of DA2, and think Inquisition could've done with a bit more of it. (In some ways I think DA2 is the stronger game, and hope that BioWare finds a better balance next time.)

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I loved DA2, because of the combat and because Hawke just comes to life with whatever personality you may choose. Playing DAI now and I'm nowhere as attached to the inquisitor as I was with Hawke. Also the AI is really stupid and you can't fix it with the dumbed down tactics. I hate that I can't set the tactics to make the AI perform detonations.

Yeah, I already know that I wouldn't like the Dragon Age games just because I'm not a fan of fantasy settings like that. Good to know I'm not missing much.

I loved DAO the first couple of times, then it got tedious. I can't really get into to it and I lose patience with it- I'll play it only to have a good leveled character for Awakening- love Awakening.

DA2 is fun.

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I disliked (and I think many others) disliked that there was literally nothing you could do to have a even somewhat 'good' end. Orgins for all you say is edge dark grim gr is lighter and gives you more chances to do actually GOOD in the land, good that is not undone in a fucking time skip. I also disliked the Mass Effect style diagloue options from DA:2. I want to know what my character is going to say not have to hope that the choice doesn't come off assholish when you just mean to sound a little sarcastic.

Tl;dr edition: DA:O - good ends possible, more choices, all the choices DA: 2 everything ends badly, railroads all the way down, what do you mean you want to decide things?

If it makes you feel better, I absolutely love Origins but hated Inquisition. So you might like it.

Ehh, I don't know if I'd call Dragon Age "Tolkien-esque", but that's me quibbling over the details between the two. DA has a medieval-style culture, Men, Elves, Dwarves, Dragons - even orcs, if you think about the darkspawn that way - but on a whole it feels more thematically gritty than LotR, which has a lot more straight-forward mythic "Good vs. Evil".

Believe me, I have thought about this because of my crossover concept between those two worlds.

But I liked DA, it reminded me of Baldur's Gate and hit me right in that spot where I loved BG. Bioware came through for me when I could no longer get my favour game working.

But I don't blame you if you didn't take to it. It simply wasn't your thing, while it was mine. I can't speak for the sequels because I didn't finish Awakening and I wanted a proper savegame to base my play of DA2 on. I still haven't played DA2 and I can't install DA:I until I upgrade my computer.

I still have hopes for DA:I though.

I love DA:O, but I totally agree about the gameplay being a slough. I don't know what you thought was unlikable though, so I can't say whether or not you'd enjoy the characters in Inquistion, but DA2 is still my favorite of the three. The gameplay is better than origins, but I'm still not entirely sold on it. DA2 was more simplistic, but it was more fun.

I prefer DA2 to DA. Only finished DA for the second...but never finished the second as it's just too long. Not particularly interested in DAI :/

Just doesn't click enough. I think between length, 3rd POV and too many characters I don't care about...

I thought the characters in DA:O were great, but otherwise I agree. The gameplay was so bad I quit pretty early on; so did most of the gamers I know for precisely that reason >>

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
it's probably because DAO was one of the first RPGs that I played, but I actually liked the gameplay in Origins and thought it was pretty easy to get the hang of. I think I recall being kind of annoyed by the changes that DA2 made

(Anonymous) 2014-12-31 10:11 am (UTC)(link)
I loved DA:O, but I enjoyed D2's plot and characters more. DA:O is really thin and uninspiring when it comes to the story department. I did prefer DA:O's magic system though and the multiple ways to combine spells. DA2 sadly has less of that. Sure, it makes the mages less over-powered, but DA2 still isn't balanced. IMO in that one the rogue is way ahead over the other classes.

I find I'm starting to get sick of people seeing dwarves, elves, and dragons and saying "TOLKIEN-FAPPING" (or the many variants of that phrase). Tolkien didn't invent any of the concepts he used in his books (he took them from previous fantasy which yeah, did exist, and from mythology and legend). And a story that shares similar elements isn't necessarily aping him.
